Barnes & Noble has been doing very well its Nook line of the readers. The company CEO, William Lynch, is talking about the future of the Nook and giving hints about what we might see in the future for the line. One of the things that he says is coming to the company the rear term is NFC technology.
Lynch says that NFC chips will start showing up “soon” in the Nook line of readers. Recently Barnes & Noble and Microsoft announced a partnership that will have Microsoft investing at least $605 million in a new subsidiary that includes Barnes & Noble’s Nook reader and its college textbook business. Lynch talked about the future the business with Forbes recently.

Microsoft invests $300 million in new Barnes & Noble 'strategic partnership

Microsoft invests $300 million in new Barnes & Noble 'strategic partnership

Posted on May 02, 2012 by MG1

Well, that's an interesting end to all those legal tussles. Microsoft and bookseller Barnes and Noble have decided to buddy-up in the face of competitors like Amazon and Apple. The strategic partnership -- Microsoft loves 'em -- would come in the form of a new Barnes and Noble subsidiary that deals with all things Nook, in addition to its education business. The bookseller would hold onto the lion's share at 82.4 percent, with the remaining 17.6 percent in Microsoft's control. The first benefit posited would be a Nook app for the incoming Windows 8. Barnes and Noble's Nook Study software would also benefit from a friendly boost on all that Windows hardware. Maybe all those other legal matche...

Barnes & Noble's mystery Nook Audio revealed to be a pair of headphones

Barnes & Noble's mystery Nook Audio revealed to be a pair of headphones

Posted on Apr 19, 2012 by MG3

We heard of a mystery Barnes & Noble product known as Nook Audio a few weeks ago, but now the secret is out — according to a new image added to the product page on BN.com, it appears to be simply a pair of headphones. There's unfortunately still no other details whatsoever — no price, no release date, or any hint on what might make these headphones qualified to bear the Nook brand. With an image now available, however, we'd expect some real detail on this product to make the rounds very soon. With the Nook Tablet and Nook Color's audio and video capabilities, we suppose a Nook-branded pair of headphones makes at least some amount of sense.

NOOK Audio coming from Barnes and Noble soon

It appears that either Barnes & Noble played a very low-key April Fool’s joke on unsuspecting NOOK lovers this week, or they’re bringing a NOOK Audio device to the market very soon. What we’re seeing today is a NOOK Audio model number OE250 page on Barnes & Noble thanks to intrepid searchers at The Digital Reader where they also note that the company filed for a trademark for that name all the way back in February (last month.) Will Barnes & Noble be releasing an MP3 player soon?

It's Official: Barnes & Noble Rolls Out 8GB Nook Tablet for $199

Posted on Feb 22, 2012 by MG3

Barnes & Noble on Tuesday officially introduced a previously rumored 8GB version of its low price Nook Tablet. By cutting internal storage in half from 16GB and reducing the amount of RAM to 512MB, B&N was able to shave $50 off the retail cost and sell the new version for $199, the same exact price as Amazon's competing Kindle Fire tablet, which happens to be the second most popular slate on the planet behind Apple's iPad.

"For any customer who likes to read digitally, watch movies or TV shows, browse the web, or help their kids read and learn through interactive books and apps, our new $199 Nook Tablet with 8GB is the best product value on the market," said William Lynch, Chief Executive O...

ITC reportedly rejects Barnes & Noble's antitrust complaint against Microsoft

ITC reportedly rejects Barnes & Noble's antitrust complaint against Microsoft

Posted on Feb 02, 2012 by MG1

Barnes & Noble and Microsoft are currently tied up in two separate legal battles, one being heard by the Department of Justice and the other by the International Trade Commission. In March 2011, like previous Android vendors, Microsoft accused Barnes & Noble’s NOOK and NOOK Color of infringing on the company’s patents. The software giant, which takes in roughly $450 million a year through Android royalties, was looking to license the infringed patents to the bookseller, but the company fired back with claims that Microsoft was creating an abusive monopoly. It is now being suggested by patent expert Florian Muller of FOSS Patents that the ITC is likely to reject Barnes & Noble’s antitrust com...

Here's how to root your Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet (hint: it's super simple)

Posted on Jan 31, 2012 by MG1

The Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet is probably the most affordable 7-inch tablet offering you a decent amount of space, extendible via a microSD card, but that card slot there also opens up another possibility. Turns out, rooting the Nook Tablet is done easiest via a microSD card.
So how do you do it? All you need is a microSD card of 2GB or more, a computer running on Windows, and the Nook Tablet with its software version being 1.4.1 or earlier. There are also separate instructions for Mac and Linux.

Barnes & Noble's next Nook said to launch this spring

Barnes & Noble's next Nook said to launch this spring

Posted on Jan 31, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Barnes & Noble

Barnes & Noble’s fifth-generation “e-reading device” will reportedly launch this coming spring. Mentioned in passing within a New York Times profile of the struggling bookseller, it is unclear if the device in question will be a new media tablet or a standard eReader. With Barnes & Noble’s current-generation color tablet having just been announced this past November, however, a refresh of the company’s E Ink-equipped Nook Touch in the spring seems more likely. Barnes & Noble first unveiled the Nook Touch — then referred to as the “all-new Nook” — at a press conference in New York last spring. The device has since been upgraded with an improved display and a battery that lasts up to two month...

Barnes & Noble considers selling Nook business

Barnes & Noble considers selling Nook business

Posted on Jan 05, 2012 by MG3

Barnes & Noble conducted an unusual strategy Thursday that amounted to an attempt to sell its Nook e-reader business. Although its Nook sales spiked 70 percent over what they were last year, the company was considering both breaking out the Nook group both for separate reporting as well as a selloff. The company wanted to "unlock that value" in its digital business, it said, and was planning a review that by the end of the year would make a decision on the business.

B&N NOOK Tablet firmware update blocks app sideloading

B&N NOOK Tablet firmware update blocks app sideloading

Posted on Dec 21, 2011 by MG15

Barnes & Noble has slammed shut the loophole allowing NOOK Tablet owners to install third-party apps, pushing out a new firmware update – v1.4.1 – that closes the door on all but the retailer’s own, approved software. Described as making “minor system enhancements” to the Android-based ereader by B&N itself, the software significantly limits the general usefulness of the NOOK Tablet for those wanting to do more than basic reading and browsing.

The Ebook Reader found that existing apps side-loaded onto the NOOK Tablet are still present and functional after the v1.4.1 firmware has been installed. However, attempting to run a package installer for a new app prompts an error message saying onl...

Barnes & Noble may have shipped 1.5m Nook tablets this fall

Barnes & Noble may have shipped 1.5m Nook tablets this fall

Posted on Dec 16, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Barnes & Noble

Barnes & Noble may have doubled its tablet shipments in the fall. Having shipped over 800,000 Nook Color devices in the summer, the company was said by part suppliers speaking to Digitimes late Thursday to be delivering a combination of 1.5 million Android-based devices during the fall. About 1.1 million of those would be the new Nook Tablet, with the remaining 400,000 being the price-discounted Color.
Long-term goals would have it shipping four million to 4.1 million Nook Tablets over all 2012, though, suggesting the company might be cautious about its expectations.

Nook Simple Touch gets $79 limited edition for Black Friday, makes other e-readers vaguely jealous

Posted on Nov 24, 2011 by MG1

Barnes & Noble is celebrating Black Friday with a white border. The bookstore chain is offering up a limited edition of its excellent Nook Simple Touch reader this Friday, November 25th. Slight aesthetic differences aside, the real news here is the price -- the company is knocking $20 off the already low-cost device, making it the same as Amazon's ad-supported, touchscreen-free fourth gen Kindle. The $79 deal will only last one day, so get 'em while the e-ink is hot. Press info after the jump.

Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet already rooted

Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet already rooted

Posted on Nov 21, 2011 by MG15

Keeping up the tradition of hacked Nooks, XDA-Developers forum contributors have posted a full root for the Nook Tablet. A combination of USB drivers as well as either a batch program or a command line sequence will let users freely install or remove apps on the Android 2.3 slate. The hack, zergRush, doesn't unlock the bootloader and thus won't take completely new firmware like CyanogenMod.

Barnes & Noble hasn't been openly embracing of hacks, but it has been conscious of the increasing pressure to turn its most advanced Nook devices into general tablets. After first limiting the Nook Color to a handful of features, the bookstore added an app store and otherwise filled out the Android 2.2 u...

Nook Tablet limits internal storage for non-B&N purchased content to 1GB

Nook Tablet limits internal storage for non-B&N purchased content to 1GB

Posted on Nov 17, 2011 by MG1

Well, this is definitely a bummer. Barnes & Noble has spent a fair amount of time talking up all of the Nook Tablet's internal advantages over the Kindle Fire, a list that includes 16GB of storage to the Fire's 8GB. That particular spec may not be quite as good as it looks on paper, however. It seems that Barnes & Noble is currently limiting internal storage on the Android slate to 1GB of content not downloaded directly from B&N. Bummer, right? Especially for those expecting to store their multimedia content on the device. It's not all bad, though. Keep in mind that, unlike the Fire, the Nook's got a not-so-secret weapon -- expandable memory via a microSD card slot located behind the tablet'...
