Rob Schmitz is the chief of American Public Media’s Marketplace China bureau and he recently got in the limelight by taking a big part in exposing the lies of Mike Dorsay in its “Agony and ecstasy of Steve Jobs.” He appeared on This American Life, and his involvement got him direct and very rare access inside Apple’s Foxconn factories.
Schmitz is preparing a bigger piece about the conditions of workers he saw and while generally he describes their job as very mundane and talks about some issues with supervisors, he reassures us that the Foxconn factory looks more like a college campus rather than a slave camp.

It's looking more and more like if it's good enough for Apple, it's good enough for Amazon. Not only has Amazon taken a note from Apple in building up content stores for music, video and books, but also in bringing those stores together in the ultimate content consumption device: a tablet. Granted, Amazon is using the hardware as a loss leader to sell content, whereas Apple uses the content to sell hardware, but the parallels are still there. Amazon also took a cue from Apple in making said tablet into a closed ecosystem (albeit build upon an open source project,) with content reviews and controls, in order to create a very specific experience for the user. Foxconn to build all iPad units this year

Foxconn will be the only manufacturer to build the iPad this year, DigiTimes reported on Wednesday. There were reports earlier this week that suggested Apple had been in talks with either Pegatron or Quanta Computer as a second manufacturer in order to create enough units for the launch of a new model in September. However, Foxconn reportedly caught word of Apple’s discussions with other manufacturing outlets and was able to convince the Cupertino-based company to stick with one manufacturer… for now.
