Amazon Kindle Fire with ads on the horizon

Amazon Kindle Fire with ads on the horizon

Posted on May 21, 2012 by MG1

Amazon is reportedly meeting with advertisers to pitch the idea of welcome screen ads on its popular Kindle Fire tablet. The retail giant is asking $600,000 for prime placement on the slate, according to a report from AdAge. Amazon currently offers its entire range of Kindle eReaders with advertisements that appear on the devices’ screen savers. Customers who opt to purchase a Kindle with ads enjoy discounts of between $30 and $50 off the purchase price of the devices; if Amazon carries the same model over to its Kindle Fire, the end-user cost of the tablet could drop by as much as 25% to $149. Following an explosive launch quarter that saw Amazon’s Kindle Fire take an estimated 14% of the g...

Amazon Appstore offers Draw Something for Amazon Kindle Fire

Amazon Appstore offers Draw Something for Amazon Kindle Fire

Posted on Apr 27, 2012 by MG1

The hottest mobile game around is not Angry Birds and is not even Words With Friends. The most popular game is Draw Something, the Pictionary-esque game that has so much momentum that it was the reason that Zynga paid $180 million (plus $30 million in employee retention bonuses) to buy Draw Something's developer OMGPOP. The problem for Amazon Kindle Fire users was that the game has not been available in the Amazon Appstore. Since we earlier told you that half of all Android tablet sales belong to the low-priced Amazon Kindle Fire, that meant that half of all Android tablet users were missing out on the game that was the number one free app, number one paid app and number one game in 80 count...

Amazon may launch three more Kindle Fires in 2012

Posted on Mar 27, 2012 by MG1

Amazon may bring three new versions of its Kindle Fire tablet to market in 2012, according to a report from Taiwan Economic News. Matching up with earlier rumors that have suggested the retail giant would introduce a larger device, the site reports that Amazon is readying an 8.9-inch model with a screen resolution of 1,920 x 1,200 pixels. The publication also suggested that Amazon will introduce a low-end 7-inch model with a resolution of 1,024 x 600 pixels, as well as a medium to high-end 7-inch model that will include a 1,280 x 800-pixel display. While Apple CEO Tim Cook claimed that Amazon’s tablet had no impact on iPad sales, the Kindle Fire managed to capture 14% of the tablet market in...

Google tablet - 7-inch device in the works?

Google tablet - 7-inch device in the works?

Posted on Feb 27, 2012 by MG3

Google will jump into the tablet market this year with its own 7-inch device, according to a DisplaySearch analyst.
The tablet market has experienced rapid growth over the past couple of years thanks to devices such as the iPad 2, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Kindle Fire and it looks as though Google wants in on that cake, with its Ice Cream Sandwich operating system providing it with a good starting point.
Speaking to Cnet, analyst Richard Shim suggested that a self-branded, 7-inch (1280x800) Google tablet running Ice Cream Sandwich would start production in April.

Amazon building 10-inch Kindle Fire

Amazon building 10-inch Kindle Fire

Posted on Feb 22, 2012 by MG1

If you passed on the Kindle Fire because you felt its 7-inch display was too small, then you may be in luck with this latest rumor. According to China Times, Amazon is said to be working on a 10-inch version of the hottest selling Android tablet on the market, which is slated to release sometime in the second quarter.
If true, this suggest that the Kindle maker would be competing directly with the iPad when it comes to size and form factor. Like all rumors this needs to be taken with a grain of salt until more concrete evidence comes to light. When it comes to specs, no one knows what this slate will carry; all that’s being said is Foxconn will supposedly manufacture this larger tablet which...

Apple CEO Tim Cook comments on Amazon Kindle Fire and pre-paid Apple iPhone

Apple CEO Tim Cook comments on Amazon Kindle Fire and pre-paid Apple iPhone

Posted on Feb 15, 2012 by MG1

Apple CEO Tim Cook made some comments today at the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference, on a few subjects ranging from pre-paid versions of the Apple iPhone to the Amazon Kindle Fire. Speaking about the latter, Cook says that there is no doubt that Amazon has and will "sell a ton of units," and pointed out that the low priced tablet has carved out a niche for itself. The executive said that the low $199 price of the tablet is not the only factor behind its success, although he did say that some Kindle Fire buyers "soured" on the device after buying it and taking it home. "People feel great when they pay from their wallet, but when they get home and use [the tablet], the joy is ...

Kindle Fire Could Be More Profitable Than Expected

Kindle Fire Could Be More Profitable Than Expected

Posted on Jan 20, 2012 by MG1

Amazon's Kindle Fire, released in November, may wind up being more profitable than was expected, thanks to users' penchant for purchasing digital goods, according to a new research report from RBC Capital.
Though Amazon actually eats a loss of an estimated $18 for every Kindle sold due to manufacturing costs and other factors, the company makes up for it through sales of ebooks and apps, according to the report. Based on survey of 216 Kindle Fire Owners, RBC analysts estimated that over the course of three years, each Kindle Fire sold could earn Amazon $136.
"Amazon will break even on a Kindle Fire unit in less than five months, accounting only for direct digital good purchases," the report ...

Kindle Fire firmware update 6.2.2 brings full-screen browsing

Kindle Fire firmware update 6.2.2 brings full-screen browsing

Posted on Jan 19, 2012 by MG3

The fine folks over at Amazon have further flushed out the firmware on its fiercely popular Fire tablet. Upgrading your Kindle Fire to version 6.2.2 will bring a handful of small performance tweaks, bugs fixes and, most notably, add a full-screen mode to the device's Silk browser. If you've gone ahead and rooted your Fire, applying the firmware bump will kill superuser access -- although a fresh build of BurritoRoot 2 should get you back on the straight and narrow. The new code is being pushed out over-the-air as we type, while those that enjoy the endorphin rush associated with instant gratification -- and know how to manually update a Kindle -- can find a link to the 6.2.2 firmware file be...

Amazon's Silk Browser ported from Kindle Fire to other Android devices

Amazon's Silk Browser ported from Kindle Fire to other Android devices

Posted on Jan 04, 2012 by MG3

One of the original selling points of Amazon's Kindle Fire was the Silk browser, which promised cloud-accelerated speeds to users. Silk loads some webpage elements on the server side, and tries to predict which links you'll click on next so it can preload the next page you're likely to visit. Now, a member of the xda-developers forum has released what is apparently a port of Silk for other Android devices.

New Kindle Fire root dodges Amazon's 6.2.1 update roadblocks

New Kindle Fire root dodges Amazon's 6.2.1 update roadblocks

Posted on Dec 27, 2011 by MG1

Amazon's attempts to close down root access on the Kindle Fire were skipped again after a new root app was published on Friday. The new version from Android Police uses a different approach altogether and is more universal. To date, it should patch not just the current Kindle Firs code but every version before it.
Implementing it requires a pair of apps and using Google's ADB to crack it.
The update, as usual, carries typical risks. It voids the warranty as long as it's active, and could potentially cause problems. Amazon will probably try to patch the exploit that allowed the root and, unlike with other Android tablets, can force the updates to come without permission.

Amazon has released the promised software update for its Kindle Fire tablet. The update, according to Amazon, improves performance and fixes bugs on the device. The company has also taken steps to make it more difficult to make purchases on the tablet.
