AT&T talking up LTE-enabled Windows 8 tablets at Developer Summit

Posted on Jan 09, 2012 by MG1

If you're looking for maximum exposure for your developer event, might as well host it during the same week at CES. For bonus points, have it in the same city. That's precisely what AT&T has done for its 2012 Developer Summit, and while the majority of the sessions won't tickle the fancy of everyday consumers, there's one slot in particular that's giving us pause. Titled "A Metro Style Hemi," an afternoon session at the event will showcase a Windows 8 tablet, reportedly powered by one of Qualcomm's many chips. There's no details on whether or not a physical unit will be on hand with an active LTE radio, but it's useful to know that Microsoft's already talking with the carrier about hosting s...

AT&T's LTE glow has spread to 11 new locales, including NYC, SF, and LA. From where I'm sitting in frigid Brooklyn, Big Blue is delivering some serious mobile bandwidth.
After running nine tests on the HTC Vivid via Speedtest.net, my average downstream speed was 3 megabytes per second. That's faster than my home cable connection. The average upload speed was 1.5 megabytes per second, which is also pretty stellar. Latency averaged out with a ping of 50, which is more than decent. Overall very fast, and beating out my experience in DC last November.

Nokia Ace may get 'halo' status on AT&T, $100m marketing

Posted on Jan 04, 2012 by MG3

The Nokia Ace will get top-tier treatment when it arrives on AT&T in March, according to rumors on Tuesday. AT&T would give the phone hero-level treatment, BetaNews heard, both advertising and pushing it at every level. The carrier is considered the main partner for Windows Phone, but until now purportedly wasn't giving Microsoft's OS full attention.

TiVo, AT&T patent settlement will send at least $215 million TiVo's way through 2018

TiVo, AT&T patent settlement will send at least $215 million TiVo's way through 2018

Posted on Jan 04, 2012 by MG3

After leveraging its DVR patent portfolio into a $500 million settlement with Dish Network and Echostar TiVo has made it rain again, cutting a mutual patent licensing deal with AT&T that settles their litigation and will result in at least $215 million heading its way through 2018. Additional license fees are possible based on AT&T's U-verse DVR subscriber base, so besides the $51 million up front and recurring payments after that, there could be even more money at stake.

Samsung Galaxy Note spotted with AT&T logo

Samsung Galaxy Note spotted with AT&T logo

Posted on Jan 04, 2012 by MG1

The Samsung Galaxy Note has been spotted in a leaked render with an AT&T logo. The South Korea-based phone maker has already confirmed that the popular device will launch in the United States, but we haven’t yet heard a confirmation from a U.S. carrier. That may all change soon, however; the Consumer Electronics Show kicks off in less than a week and AT&T may make a Galaxy Note-related announcement at the show. The device packs a 5.3-inch display with a 1280 x 800-pixel resolution, an 8-megapixel camera, a 2-megapixel front-facing camera for video chats and a 1.4GHz processor. AT&T’s version of the Galaxy Note will supposedly offer 4G LTE support, too.

CyanogenMod 7 nightly builds come for AT&T's LG Thrill, the Sony Ericsson Xperia active and Xperia pro

CyanogenMod 7 nightly builds come for AT&T's LG Thrill, the Sony Ericsson Xperia active and Xperia pro

Posted on Jan 04, 2012 by MG1

CyanogenMod nightlies have appeared for AT&T's LG Thrill 4G, as well as the Sony Ericsson Xperia active and Xperia Pro handsets.
The mods, which are intended to test features and iron out bugs, are based on the current CM7 edition, not the Ice Cream Sandwich-laden CM9, which is still in the labs, but you'll still get the purified, functional CyanogenMod experience.
Since these nightlies are a necessary step on the way to stable releases, your LG Thrill 4G and the two Xperias should be in the list of supported devices soon, and hopefully you will see CyanogenMod 9 gracing the screen too afterwards, if you love playing around with your Android phone's capabilities. And what CyanogenMod user d...

T-Mobile USA to receive AWS spectrum and a 3G roaming deal from AT&T breakup

Deutsche Telekom recently detailed the breakup terms AT&T agreed to following the deterioration of its planned acquisition of T-Mobile USA. Deutsche Telekom will receive $3 billion in cash and T-Mobile USA will benefit from fresh AWS spectrum as well as a new 7-year 3G roaming deal with AT&T. “As part of the break-up fee, T-Mobile USA will receive a large package of AWS mobile spectrum in 128 Cellular Market Areas (CMAs), including 12 of the top 20 markets (Los Angeles, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Washington, Boston, San Francisco, Phoenix, San Diego, Denver, Baltimore and Seattle),” Deutsche Telekom said in a statement. “The UMTS roaming agreement for the U.S. in T-Mobile USA’s favor has a te...

Sprint responds to AT&T's decision to drop T-Mobile acquisition bid

AT&T announced today that it will no longer pursue its acquisition of T-Mobile US. The wireless carrier faced an uphill battle after both the Department of Justice and the Federal Communications Commission opposed the deal. Rather than throw more money at a losing cause, AT&T will pay Deutsche Telecom a $4 billion fee and walk away from the deal.
After AT&T announced its decision, Sprint issued a press release that supported this move and praised the government for blocking this deal.

AT&T CEO says blocking T-Mobile merger will increase wireless prices

AT&T CEO says blocking T-Mobile merger will increase wireless prices

Posted on Dec 12, 2011 by MG1

AT&T chief executive officer Randall Stephenson recently said in a Captains of Industry interview with Bloomberg that blocking his company’s proposed $39 billion acquisition of T-Mobile USA will increase wireless prices for consumers. Stephenson explained that AT&T needs T-Mobile in order to expand its already strained network capacity, and that Congress doesn’t understand wireless policy. ”Regulators can’t keep up with the changes in the industry,” Stephenson said. AT&T recently withdrew its application from the FCC to acquire T-Mobile USA and said that it will first focus on a lawsuit brought against the merger by the Department of Justice. Should AT&T win the lawsuit, which is expected to...

AT&T LTE network goes live in parts of New York City

Posted on Dec 05, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Cell PhonesAT&T

AT&T's 4G LTE hasn't officially been rolled out in New York City yet, but it looks like the super-fast network is already live. As we ran speed tests on our LG Nitro HD review unit around Manhattan and Brooklyn, we got speeds as high as 41Mbps down and 15Mbps up, which wouldn't come from anything other than a brand-new, traffic-free LTE network. (Plus, the "4G LTE" icon next to the signal meter is a dead giveaway.) Speeds weren't consistently that fast, though — we got 5.8Mbps down and 3.7 up at a test in midtown. A tipster has also reported that the Samsung Skyrocket is getting LTE coverage in Manhattan, so if you've got a Skyrocket or HTC Vivid, today's probably a good day to stream some H...

AT&T's LG Nitro HD goes up for sale, LTE-enabled Gingerbread pep for $250

In case you forget that AT&T's latest LTE-equipped smartphone hit shelves today, consider this a friendly reminder from your mobile obsessed friends here at Engadget. We're talking about the LG's Nitro HD, the 4.5-inch device we lovingly handled last week -- loaded with a skinned version of Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread, running atop its peppy 1.5 GHz Qualcomm APQ8060 dual-core processor. If you'll recall, it's notably packing a 1280 x 720p screen resolution with an ultra-crisp looking 329ppi, an 8 megapixel rear camera (1.3 MP up front) and a healthy 4GB of internal storage supplemented by an included 16GB microSD card (expandable to 32GB). Thankfully, bloatware on the Nitro is at an all time lo...

White Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket arriving on AT&T just in time for the holidays

White Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket arriving on AT&T just in time for the holidays

Posted on Dec 02, 2011 by MG1

The Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket was among the first LTE-enabled handsets on AT&T, and with its thin profile and dual-core chip, the only thing it was missing was... a white paint job. Well, at least that would have been nice and we can see how many would go for the white version. It seems that AT&T and Samsung also think this way, and the companies have announced that a white Skyrocket is landing on the carrier just in time for the holidays.
The pale Galaxy S II Skyrocket will arrive on the carrier on December 4th and is expected to retail for $249.99 with a contract, the same price as the original, dark version of the handset.
The Skyrocket features a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED Plus screen wit...

AT&T considering joint venture with T-Mobile if merger falls apart

Posted on Dec 01, 2011 by MG1

AT&T is reportedly considering a joint venture with T-Mobile USA parent company Deutsche Telekom instead of buying T-Mobile USA outright. Sources speaking to The Wall Street Journal said the plans are far from final, but such a deal could be looked at more closely now that AT&T is facing a number of roadblocks with its planned merger. AT&T recently withdrew its application from the FCC to acquire T-Mobile USA; the carrier will instead focus on a lawsuit brought against the merger by the Department of Justice, which is expected to begin in February. The FCC released a 109-page document that suggested it was not in favor of AT&T purchasing T-Mobile for a number of reasons, including an apparen...
