Apple TV Hacked To Play HTML 5 Games

Apple TV Hacked To Play HTML 5 Games

Posted on Aug 09, 2011 by MG1

The Apple TV was just recently updated with support for Vimeo and TV show streaming, suggesting that Apple still has many plans for this supposed “hobby” of a product. With the upcoming iOS 5 and the iCloud, it’s likely that Apple TV may tap into these for more functionality later this fall. But for those less patient, you can hack your Apple TV for now to access HTML 5 apps and games.
A hacker installed the Couch Surfer browser on a jailbroken Apple TV and was able to demonstrate an HTML5-based game, Casino BlackJack. Now, the game is fairly bare bones and although it may not be the most impressive of feats, it does remind us of Apple TV’s potential beyond movies and TV shows.

Logitech Revue gets unofficial Honeycomb Android update

Logitech Revue gets unofficial Honeycomb Android update

Posted on Aug 02, 2011 by MG1

I’ve never been the sort that was willing to risk running one of my gadgets applying unofficial software and updates. I tend to make do with what OS my gear is running until the official update finally comes out. If you are the sort that likes to apply beta software and unofficial updates to your gadgets and use a Logitech Revue set-top box you may like the unofficial update.
The geeks at GTVHackers have built an unofficial Honeycomb Android OS upgrade specifically for the Revue. The upgrade can be downloaded right now. There is a catch though, the update could ruin your device and you might not be able to revert to the official OS. The update is a beta offering and is not ready for the gene...

Apple TV gets software update, preliminary iCloud support

Posted on Aug 02, 2011 by MG1

Apple issued an update to its Apple TV product on Monday that will allow users to stream purchased high-definition TV shows directly from iTunes. Specifically, Apple says the update will enable:
iTunes TV Shows: Purchase your favorite TV shows directly from the iTunes Store, and watch the shows you already own, commercial-free in HD.
Vimeo: Browse and play videos from Vimeo, access your video inbox, and mark videos you want to watch later.
When Apple first launched the Apple TV, it only allowed users to rent movies and shows and there was not an option to purchase titles for permanent ownership. For users in the U.S., Apple has also rolled out preliminary iCloud support with this update, all...

Logitech slashes its Revue price to $99 «

Logitech slashes its Revue price to $99 «

Posted on Jul 29, 2011 by MG1

After a net loss of $29.6 million for the first quarter, it seems like Logitech wants its Revue, which was the first Google TV device, to be able to take a bigger share of the market from its competitor, the Apple TV, during the second quarter.
Today Logitech announced that its device that launched at a steep $300 will now be competitively priced at just $99.
With the first generation, unproven platform, not enough for the consumers to justify a purchase, hopefully this price drop and the update coming sometime this summer with Android Honeycomb 3.1 and Android Market support, can save it from the ashes.
Although Logitech, Best Buy and Amazon are still showing the device at $250, look for th...

Roku 2 HD, XD, and XS officially launch: same price, smaller size and Angry Birds

Roku 2 HD, XD, and XS officially launch: same price, smaller size and Angry Birds

Posted on Jul 20, 2011 by MG1

Roku has gone from a barely known streaming media box manufacturer to a retail darling in a remarkably short amount of time (the last hardware revamp launched less than a year ago) and it's back with more new hardware to continue the assault. The Roku 2 lineup will put their (much smaller) footprint in the spaces left by their predecessors when they hit shelves later this month without changing the price one bit. Besides being more energy efficient, it brings new channels including Angry Birds, Epix, MLS and more, while also upgrading the Netflix experience with support for subtitles, surround sound and 1080p video. The pricing tiers of $60 (HD), $80 (XD) and $100 (XS) remain; while stepping...

RIM said to be prepping Apple TV competitor for fall launch

RIM said to be prepping Apple TV competitor for fall launch

Posted on Jul 15, 2011 by MG1

Research In Motion is currently working on a media box codenamed “BlackBerry Cyclone” that will launch later this fall, BlackBerry news site NerdBerry.net reports. The rumored media hub is said to be similar to Apple’s iOS-based Apple TV box, which connects to a television and plays streaming video content from iTunes. The BlackBerry Cyclone’s purported capabilities include Netflix streaming, YouTube streaming and streaming from media devices connected to the same Wi-Fi network. The unit will also reportedly feature an HDMI-out port. The move would be a peculiar one from RIM, as it does not have an iTunes competitor to speak of and even with the extremely popular multimedia market, the Apple...

Apple TV to score Bluetooth support with iOS 5, make search slightly less painful?

Apple TV to score Bluetooth support with iOS 5, make search slightly less painful?

Posted on Jul 14, 2011 by MG1

Did you know that your second-gen Apple TV has a Bluetooth radio hidden inside it? Well it does but, until now, the only way to access it was with a little jailbreaking and some command line chops. That could all be changing though, with the release of iOS 5 this fall. 9to5Mac pulled some interesting code from the latest developer beta of iOS indicating that support for Bluetooth keyboards is coming to the Apple TV and, potentially, the ability pair other devices as well. In addition to making search without the iPhone remote app far less painful, a keyboard is an essential part of bringing apps to the tiny media box -- something that has been rumored would happen for quite sometime. It's po...

RIM rumored making BlackBerry Media Box to rival Apple TV

RIM rumored making BlackBerry Media Box to rival Apple TV

Posted on Jul 04, 2011 by MG1

RIM may have a counterpart to the Apple TV, according to a rumor put forward by a historically reliable source. So far nicknamed the BlackBerry Media Box, it would be a blend between the basic BlackBerry Presenter and a media hub like Apple's box. The design would even take a cue from Apple in N4BB' understanding and use the same hardware as a mobile device, in this case likely the processor and QNX-based OS from the BlackBerry PlayBook.
It wouldn't necessarily be as home-oriented as the Apple TV but might still have some third-party media services. An equivalent to AirPlay hasn't been mentioned and isn't currently known to be in the roadmap for BlackBerry Tablet OS. The OS does already supp...

Google TV 2.0 Coming to Logitech Revue This Summer

Google TV 2.0 Coming to Logitech Revue This Summer

Posted on Jun 23, 2011 by MG3

For many, the deal breaker for the Logitech Revue and other Google TV products was two words: IR blaster. Opting to act as a supplement to your current home theater set-up rather than a replacement for a cable/satellite set-top box, the device was hamstrung by a somewhat complicated set-up process. But this was never about the hardware, the workhorse of this product was the Android-based OS behind it all. Bringing the web to the TV has been a concept bouncing around the consumer electronics industry years, and Google’s effort leveraged the Chrome browser to bring any content to your living room. The execution, though solid, failed to meet expectations; primarily because there seemed to be so...
