Roku players add Dish international TV channels, become that much more exotic

Roku players add Dish international TV channels, become that much more exotic

Posted on May 24, 2012 by MG3

Roku has already been turning its players into TV hubs, but it's been focused on US programming -- not so hot if you're an immigrant hoping to catch up on affairs back in the homeland. Dish is aiming to remedy that by offering its Dishworld service as an avenue for the media hub: owners can subscribe to over 50 channels without having to spring for a satellite package. The focus is heaviest on south Asia, with Bangladesh, India and Pakistan getting the most service -- including a few cricket channels for good measure. Arab channels like Al Jazeera and Brazilian channels like TV Globo Internacional join the fray as well. Roku 2 and Roku LT viewers living in the US can already subscribe to Dis...

New Roku HD shows up at the FCC, looks like a fusion of current boxes

New Roku HD shows up at the FCC, looks like a fusion of current boxes

Posted on Mar 16, 2012 by MG3

If a recent FCC pit stop is to be believed (and it should), Roku's next-gen HD box may very well be on its way. Physically, the miniature device keeps the same form factor as its siblings save for the purple splash on its base -- much like a color-flipped LT. Still, the main highlight isn't its minimal makeover, but instead the resurgence of full-sized composite outputs, which had been absent since the first HD-flavored Roku. Furthermore, FCC docs reveal a Broadcom BCM7208 CPU alongside 2GB of flash memory in the box's innards, while it lacks the microSD slot found in the current model. More info is sure to spill over the next few days; in the meantime, give the source link below a click to ...

Roku 2 XS and Roku LT now streaming into UK and Ireland

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG2

Roku, the leading streaming platform in the US and suppliers of what we like to call smart TV adapters, has announced that it is launching in the UK and Ireland. Two models of Roku will be available.
The Roku 2 XS provides support for up to 1080p video and features a motion-controlled Bluetooth game remote for casual gaming, as well as a microSD card slot for storing games you download. It comes with a copy of Angry Birds to get you started. It features both an Ethernet port and Wi-Fi for connection to your network. It costs £99.99.
The Roku LT is more affordable at £49.99 and only offers 720p video support and offers Wi-Fi. Both Roku models can be connected to your TV via RCA or HDMI, so wi...

Roku coming to UK and Ireland at end of January

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG15

Now that Netflix has launched in UK and Ireland, Roku has announced its first set-top boxes for release across the pond. The Roku LT and Roku XS are expected to ship at the end of January through Amazon.co.uk for £49.99 and £99.99, respectively — a pre-order page is live for LT, while the XS' page is currently pointing to a third-party vendor with a slightly higher-than-suggested retail price. In addition to Netflix, the company promises more than 40 content channels including MLB.TV, Facebook, Flickr, WSJ, FoxNews.com, and Crackle (UK only). Plus Angry Birds for the premium model. Additional retailers will be announced later.

Roku coming to UK and Canada early next year

Roku coming to UK and Canada early next year

Posted on Nov 18, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Roku

Roku's lineup of inexpensive media streamers has been popular enough in the US for the company to credibly talk about putting one under every TV, and now they're going international: Roku just announced that it'll be selling boxes in the UK and and Canada early next year. Of course, a streaming box is nothing without content services, so we'll see how many of Roku's channels make the trip with it, but Roku says it'll work on region-specific channels and Netflix has been making big moves in the UK, so the core pieces are definitely in place. As for Canada, well, you're cool too.

Roku adds dedicated Pandora button to remote [Update: Netflix & Crackle too!]

Filed in: Roku

Roku is adding a dedicated Pandora button to the remote controls for its streaming media set-top boxes, allowing for one-touch access to the internet radio service. The Roku 2 XD and Roku LT models will both get the new remote sometime this month, adding another option alongside the existing homescreen shortcut. According to Roku, Pandora remains the most popular music channel the STBs offer.
It’s unclear whether existing owners will be able to buy the new remote control, or if they’ll have to satisfy themselves with the menu option. It will be bundled with Roku’s most recent – and cheapest – STB, the Roku LT, announced last month and offering streaming access to Netflix, Pandora and other ...

Don't think Roku is sitting back on its laurels after rolling out a slew of new hardware including the Roku 2 family and the new, low end Roku LT. As promised, it has issued a firmware update enabling new gaming options including Pac Man:CE, Galaga, and Angry Birds Seasons. Even if you're committed to Roku's hockey pucks as purely video streamers, there's a new firmware update to correct, among other things, issues that caused a darker than normal image on some displays, WiFi performance, boot performance, readiness for HBO Go, and subtitles on Netflix. Check out Roku's blog for the full list of fixes or just hit the software update section in your settings menu to make sure you have the lat...

Roku announces $50 LT model, will add HBO Go streaming to all of its boxes this month

Roku announces $50 LT model, will add HBO Go streaming to all of its boxes this month

Posted on Oct 11, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Roku

That cheaper, purpler, Roku LT we spied passing through the FCC and beta testing is official, and will hit retail shelves for just $50 next month. It's only $10 less than the also-720p-limited Roku 2 HD, but that model isn't sold everywhere and if you're just snagging a box to watch some Netflix you probably won't notice the missing Bluetooth and SD card reader. No matter which model is selected, starting next month viewers will be able to watch HBO Go streaming content on the Roku family of hardware. Cord cutters that have dropped pay TV entirely still don't have access, but Roku CEO Anthony Wood reports around 80 percent of Roku owners still have cable or satellite, so after adding Epix an...

Roku lands short form Disney video streaming rights

Roku lands short form Disney video streaming rights

Posted on Sep 26, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Roku

With several different video streaming firms plying their wares on the streaming video market today they are all out to lure customers in with all the streaming content they firms can get hands on. One of the popular streaming services is Roku and the company has announced that it secured the rights to stream short form Disney videos to viewers.
That means you won’t get the full-length films to stream, but shorter cartoon length vids will be offered with popular Disney characters. The videos will include Winnie the Pooh, Lightning McQueen, the Jonas Brothers, Selena Gomes, and AllStar Weekend among others. Roku says that it is the first firm to offer the short form videos for streaming.

Roku 2 HD, XD, and XS officially launch: same price, smaller size and Angry Birds

Roku 2 HD, XD, and XS officially launch: same price, smaller size and Angry Birds

Posted on Jul 20, 2011 by MG1

Roku has gone from a barely known streaming media box manufacturer to a retail darling in a remarkably short amount of time (the last hardware revamp launched less than a year ago) and it's back with more new hardware to continue the assault. The Roku 2 lineup will put their (much smaller) footprint in the spaces left by their predecessors when they hit shelves later this month without changing the price one bit. Besides being more energy efficient, it brings new channels including Angry Birds, Epix, MLS and more, while also upgrading the Netflix experience with support for subtitles, surround sound and 1080p video. The pricing tiers of $60 (HD), $80 (XD) and $100 (XS) remain; while stepping...
