It's a new year and Lenovo is wasting no time making the most of it. Like so many others, Lenovo's using CES as a springboard to launch several new and refreshed products, and on tap for 2012 are new laptops in the IdeaPad U Series, Y Series, S Series, and Z Series, plus new K Series desktops and space-saving B Series all-in-one (AIO) PCs."Our new lineup of consumer laptops and desktops for 2012 reflects our commitment to deliver bold products that set the standard for innovation and style in consumer technology," said Peter Hortensius, senior vice president, Product Group, Lenovo. Tranquil PC ships MMC-12: a 1.5-inch thick, fanless HTPC

Tranquil PC ships MMC-12: a 1.5-inch thick, fanless HTPC

Posted on Jan 04, 2012 by MG3

We haven't heard from Britain's own Tranquil PC in a hot minute, but the company's storming into the new year with a machine that's easy to overlook. In a good way. The MMC-12 Media Center measures just 1.5-inches thick, enabling it to be slid into (or under) just about any A/V rack. £649 (right around $1,000) nets you a Core i3 processor, 4GB of DDR3 memory (plus another open RAM slot), an admittedly paltry 80GB mSATA hard drive, CD / DVD burner, Windows 7 Home Premium and an HDMI port. You'll also get a pair of USB 3.0 ports, two underwhelming (and bound to be unloved) USB 2.0 sockets, a gigabit Ethernet jack, DVI socket and an aluminum enclosure. The company recommends that you connect a ...

HP Unwraps Omni 27 All-in-One PC and HPE h9 Phoenix Gaming System Ahead of CES

Posted on Jan 04, 2012 by MG3

Most vendors are using the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas as a launchpad for new products, but a select few are tipping their hand ahead of the convention. Hewlett-Packard is one of them, presumably because it's saving CES for its big Spectre Ultrabook reveal. In the meantime, HP has decided to share a handful of new systems, including its first 27-inch all-in-one (AIO) PC and a Phoenix gaming system the OEM claims is the "most powerful HP Pavilion PC to date."

For 2012, power-efficient servers could get a shot in the ARM

In 2012 a fundamental change in server architecture could be on tap as companies look to cut data center costs with the help of technologies like ARM processors and graphics chips, analysts said.

Low-power processors from companies like ARM could be in full use in data centers by 2013, and mixing them up with graphics chips could bring massive performance improvements and power savings, analysts said. Experiments around implementing ARM processors in servers are already underway, and graphics chips are already being used in some of the world's fastest supercomputers.

MSI Unveils First LED-based All-in-One PC (Wind Top AE2071)

Posted on Jan 03, 2012 by MG1

All-in-one (AIO) PCs are quickly becoming a dime a dozen with little to separate one Sandy Bridge or Fusion model from the next. Credit MSI with finding a way to differentiate its new Wind Top AE2071 model from the rest by supposedly being the first in the industry to use an LED panel. Combined with MSI's "unique energy-saving technology," power consumption is reduced by 30 percent compared to conventional CCFL panels, MSI claims.

How-to: Build a killer gaming PC for under $1,000

How-to: Build a killer gaming PC for under $1,000

Filed in: Desktop Computers

Ah, the self-built PC. It wasn’t until the turn of this century that computer components were finally affordable enough for the regular Joe and Vlad to build their own, but we made up for lost time in a hurry. The insatiable appetite for newer and better hardware intermingled with the wealth of knowledge that was the internet to produce some wonderful DIY PCs. Oh sure, garish LED lights would peek out at you from some overzealous builder’s case, but at least they were a sign of the close bond shared between a machine and the human that built it.

Modern trends have threatened to leave the custom-built computer behind, what with multifunctional home consoles and constantly connected mobile de...

Microsoft announces Windows-specific Kinect for 2012 release

Microsoft announces Windows-specific Kinect for 2012 release

Posted on Nov 23, 2011 by MG1

While hackers have been having their way with the Kinect on the PC for a long, long time, Microsoft itself has only recently embraced this sort of behavior. First it was with an official SDK and then, soon after, a follow-up letting things go commercial. We've been eagerly awaiting Office integration -- imagine lazily waving away every boring PPT that lands in your inbox -- but also struggling to figure out just how such a device would fit on our cluttered desks. Microsoft is now promising a PC-specific version to release sometime in 2012, able to focus on objects as close as 50cm from the lens -- quite an improvement given our current Kinect seems unhappy if we're standing anywhere within f...

Acer reveals Veriton Z2620G and Veriton Z2610G slim all-in-one PCs

Posted on Nov 02, 2011 by MG1

In addition to the all-in-one PCs revealed earlier this morning in the Z series, Acer is presenting this week their first official glimpse of two all-in-one PCs under the Veriton name, Z2620G and Z2610G. While the Z series devices released this morning are mostly for entertainment it would seem, the Veriton duo here looks to be set for business. Ideal for “anywhere that space conservation and presentation are a priority” says Acer‘s Commercial Systems Business Manager Leila Axelle Robert, and with a 20-inch display on each of these units with a slim display cutting down on bulk, they certainly are that.

Lenovo's ThinkCentre M77 Desktop is Built for Business

Lenovo's ThinkCentre M77 Desktop is Built for Business

Posted on Nov 01, 2011 by MG1

You won't find any swirling LEDs or one-touch overclocking buttons on Lenovo's new ThinkCentre M77 desktop. Instead, this machine is all business, "crafted for professionals" looking for a "powerful, secure, energy efficient yet easy to use computer to tackle everyday office tasks," Lenovo says. Sounds like a snoozer until you realize it's (optionally) powered by an AMD FX Series processor and up to 16GB of DDR3 memory.
"Previously, this level of processing performance has only been available in premium PCs," said Tom Shell, vice president and general manager, Commercial Desktop Business Unit, Lenovo. "The ThinkCentre M77 desktop with the new AMD FX Series processors provide mainstream users...

Posted on Oct 28, 2011 by MG1

Apple has released a new firmware update for the Sandy Bridge iMacs that enables Lion Internet Recovery, allowing customers to connect to Apple's servers in the event that they need to do a clean install of OS X Lion. It additionally fixes issues with the Apple Thunderbolt Display and Thunderbolt Target Disk Mode.
Lion Recovery, designed to replace recovery discs in the post-Lion era, was originally introduced in the new MacBook Air and Mac Mini models earlier this year, and was extended to the Sandy Bridge MacBook Pros last month.
The update, which requires OS X 10.6.8 or any version of 10.7, can be downloaded using Software Update, or directly from Apple's support site.

Lenovo C325 all-in-one packs AMD Fusion, touch for $699

Lenovo C325 all-in-one packs AMD Fusion, touch for $699

Posted on Oct 25, 2011 by MG1

Lenovo hoped to bring a rare level of features to lower cost all-in-one desktops through the C325. The 20-inch PC manages to fit an optional touchscreen and native apps but keeps the price down by using AMD's 1.65GHz E-450 processor. The chip gives it graphics fast enough for modern 3D and 1080p video, including over HDMI.
The easel-shaped design still finds room for some extras, such as the options of a TV tuner or USB 3.0. An uncommon always-ready speaker system lets users plug in an outside audio source like an iPod and play it without having to turn the computer on.
Lenovo hasn't outlined what users get in the standard version other than the E-450 and a DVD burner, but prices will start ...
