Dell announces Inspiron One 2320 touchscreen all-in-one

Posted on Oct 06, 2011 by MG1

Over the past few weeks, we've seen HP and Toshiba freshen up their all-in-ones, while Samsung made a belated jump into the market just last week. Today, it's Dell's turn -- the company just announced an addition to its all-in-one lineup, the 23-inch Inspiron One 2320. Funnily enough, the new design reminds us somewhat of the PCs HP trotted out last month in that it has an easel-like display with enough space underneath to stow the keyboard, although this one doesn't have a tilting screen. Spec-wise, it's well-matched against the competition, with a 1080p touchscreen, Intel Wireless Display capability, optional NVIDIA GeForce GT525M graphics, six USB 2.0 ports, HDMI-in, a Blu-ray option and ...

Toshiba Doubles Size of All-in-One Lineup with DX735

Posted on Sep 29, 2011 by MG15

Last month, Toshiba ended its decade-long absence from the desktop market with the 21.5-inch DX1210 all-in-one (AIO) PC. Now the electronics conglomerate has effectively doubled the size of its AIO lineup by adding another product to it. The new DX735 features a 23-inch full HD multi-touch display with a “stylish and space-saving TV-like design.” The DX735, which will be available exclusively from Best Buy beginning October 2, has a base price of $956.99. Toshiba wants you to factor in the DX735’s utility as a complete “home media hub” and not just as a PC when looking at the price.

Mac Trojan Impersonates a Flash Player Installer

Posted on Sep 29, 2011 by MG15

We've always known that Macs are susceptible to malware, but without a significant portion of market share, why should anyone bother? Now that numbers are up, Mac users are finding out that their platform of choice is also vulnerable, and it's not just Windows users who have to be on the lookout. The latest threat eating away at Apple PCs is a trojan horse that tries to dupe users into thinking it's a harmless Flash Player installer.

Intel: Thunderbolt coming to PCs, prototype shown at IDF 2011 (update: video!)

Posted on Sep 15, 2011 by MG1

Guess what, Wintel loyalists? "Apple's" Thunderbolt I/O port is coming your way. If you'll recall, Thunderbolt was actually built with Intel's collaboration (Light Peak, anyone?), and sensibly, the chip giant is now making it possible for the port to appear on non-Mac machines. The news was just broken here at IDF, where a Haswell-based machine was briefly teased with a heretofore unpossible T-bolt port. Mooly Eden, vice president and general manager of the PC Client Group, was on-stage to showcase six pre-production Ultrabook designs (all based on 3rd generation Intel Core processors), but stopped short of telling us exactly when the Thunderbolt I/O port would make its debut on commercially...

Samsung could be preparing to purchase HP's PC business

Posted on Aug 24, 2011 by MG15

While Michael Dell laughs it up on Twitter, a new report suggests that Samsung could be preparing to purchase Hewlett-Packard’s PC business, which the company revealed it may soon spin off. According to a new report from DigiTimes, Samsung may be eyeing a purchase of HP’s PC division, which would catapult the South Korea-based electronics giant past Dell and into the No. 1 PC vendor spot globally. The report states that Samsung is currently meeting with various leading manufacturers including Quanta and Compal to investigate outsourcing the production of its own netbook computers. Samsung has held similar meetings in the past to no avail, but anonymous source tell DigiTimes that the company ...

Razer Claims PC Gaming Is Not Dead In Full-Page Wall Street Journal Ad

Posted on Aug 23, 2011 by MG15

Even though Microsoft pretty much ignored us at E3, you don’t need to tell Maximum PC readers that PC gaming is not dead. Razer, being a supplier of gaming mice, unsurprisingly feels the same way. We’ve already told you that the company’s rolled out pcgamingisnotdead.com and is promising to drop some big news at PAX on August 26th, but now Razer’s upped the ante: it’s written an open letter to the major consoles in a full-page ad on the Wall Street Journal.

HP Explains Decision to Shop Its PC Business

HP Explains Decision to Shop Its PC Business

Posted on Aug 22, 2011 by MG15

Hewlett Packard created more waves than a tsunami yesterday when the OEM confirmed rumors that it plans to dump its PC business, yet still managed to surprise industry analysts by announcing the end of operations for webOS devices, and specifically the slow selling TouchPad and webOS phones. Now that the the dust has settled, it's time to look at why HP thinks reinventing itself is a good idea.

In one of several press releases issued late yesterday, HP said it has the full support of its board of directors to evaluate "strategic alternatives" to its Personal Systems Group, "including the exploration of the separation of its PC business into a separate company through a spin-off or other tra...

Slim new HP TouchSmart AIO highlighted in leaked promo video

Slim new HP TouchSmart AIO highlighted in leaked promo video

Posted on Aug 15, 2011 by MG3

A tipster sent in what looks to be a video of a forthcoming HP all-in-one. The TouchSmart 520 is a slim device, propped up by two "sweeping support arms," which allow the PC to be adjusted, much like in past models. Not a lot of specs to go on at this point, though the system does sport a "high definition display" and souped up audio courtesy of Beats. Enjoy the rendered slickness in the video after the break.

Apple $999 iMac for education on sale: Thunderbolt and Bluetooth MIA

Apple $999 iMac for education on sale: Thunderbolt and Bluetooth MIA

Posted on Aug 09, 2011 by MG1

As expected, Apple has quietly announced a new iMac variant targeted at education users, bringing the sticker price down to under $1,000. The 3.1GHz iMac uses a dual-core Intel Core i3 processor paired with AMD Radeon HD 6750 256MB graphics and 2GB of memory, and offers a $999 entry point to the 21.5-inch all-in-one desktop machine.
Storage is a conservative 250GB, and there’s a SuperDrive DVD burner though – unlike the refreshed iMac models earlier this year – no Thunderbolt port for high-speed data connectivity. Instead, external displays connect via Mini DisplayPort, as per the last-gen model. You still get a FaceTime HD webcam, stereo speakers, SDXC card reader and all the usual ports, h...

New AVG Premium Security Guards Your Good Name

New AVG Premium Security Guards Your Good Name

Posted on Jul 29, 2011 by MG1

Security vendor AVG Technologies today announced a new top-tier antivirus suite, AVG Premium Security. The new suite includes everything you'll find in AVG's Internet Security package plus aggressive identity protection. According to AVG, it's the only Internet security solution around that actively surveys the Web for incidents of stolen identity, rather than taking a passive approach to protecting your name.
AVG's Identity Alert module combs through known criminal webpages, chat rooms, and bulletin boards to find out if a customer's personal information is changing hands someplace it isn't supposed to. It monitors a user's email address and debit and credit card numbers, which AVG claims a...

Today's Apple Product Releases

Today's Apple Product Releases

Posted on Jul 21, 2011 by MG1

OS X Lion is here and I am already typing this story on the new OS X update. It was not enough for Apple to just release the new OS X 10.7 though. Apple also released the highly anticipated new 2011 MacBook Air. The MacBook Air is twice as fast and features the Thunderbolt port. Mac mini fans also get treated to a new 2011 Mac mini with double the performance and Thunderbolt port.
Apple also released the world's first Thunderbolt Display. With the release of the new MacBook Air line Apple has killed the white MacBook. Apple apparently decided to not update the MacBook and have the basic MacBook Air priced at $999 take its place.
