'Smoked by Windows Phone' challenge to transition into an ad campaign

'Smoked by Windows Phone' challenge to transition into an ad campaign

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG15

This certainly shouldn't be a surprise to anyone who saw the news about the challenge before, but it is looking like the $100 challenge that we've seen at CES to beat Windows Phone on speed will likely become an advertising campaign for Microsoft. The challenge itself has reportedly been going quite well for Windows Phone, at last check it had 21 wins and only one loss and one tie, but of course the challenge wasn't exactly a fair fight. It's not that the challenge was rigged exactly, but it was certainly designed so Windows Phone would win, much like any HTML5 "test" that you'll find on Microsoft's IE sites, or a Pepsi challenge (of course Pepsi tastes better than Coke on one sip, but after...

Ice Cream Sandwich ROM leaks for the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY

Ice Cream Sandwich ROM leaks for the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG15

The official Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY will not be out until later this spring, but if you are eager to have a taste of Google's latest and greatest, you can try out this early ICS ROM that just surfaced on the web, courtesy of the guys at XDA Developers. The ROM is based on Android 4.0.3 and retains most of the looks and feel of the stock Ice Cream Sandwich experience. Judging by what the folks are saying in the comments, albeit being an early build, the ROM is still stable enough to be taken for a quick spin. Of course, there are things that don't work yet, such as the smartphone's camera, the touchpads, and the Wi-Fi hotspot functionality, bu....

Lenovo announces IdeaCentre A720 all-in-one with a multitouch display that lies nearly flat

Lenovo announces IdeaCentre A720 all-in-one with a multitouch display that lies nearly flat

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG1

Now that Lenovo's let it all out, it's easy to understand how it approached CES, and the days leading up to it. Thursday was ThinkPad day, yesterday was for all manner of consumer swag and today, Monday, is all about eye-catching designs. In addition to unveiling the Yoga convertible tablet, the company introduced the IdeaCentre A720, what it says is the world's thinnest 27-inch all-in-one. Similar to the HP TouchSmart 610, which debuted around this time last year, it has a display that can be tilted between 5 and 90 degrees, the idea being that that 10-point multitouch panel will be easier to use if it's lying at a near-flat angle. Spec-wise, it'll be offered with various Intel Core i proce...

OnLive moves past cloud gaming to cloud computing

OnLive moves past cloud gaming to cloud computing

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG15

So far, OnLive has been putting most of its efforts towards cloud gaming, where it offloads the processing power needed to run a game to its servers and just gives you what you need: the video, sound and controls. The idea is that you can run high-end games on low-end devices. Now, OnLive wants to get more into the productivity side of things with cloud computing using a virtual desktop. The OnLive Desktop app is slated as "coming soon" for both the iPad and Android, though early demos have been running on the iPad, so we'd expect that to hit first. The app reportedly will give users access to a virtual Windows 7 desktop in the cloud with 2 GB of free storage and full use of desktop apps inc...

Sony Xperia NX and Xperia acro HD Android smartphones announced for Japan

Sony Xperia NX and Xperia acro HD Android smartphones announced for Japan

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG15

Filed in: Cell PhonesSony

Aside from the Xperia ion and Xperia S, Sony Ericsson also announced two additional devices, though for the Japanese market – Xperia NX and Xperia acro HD.
The former is basically a local version of the Xperia S, while the latter is a follow-up to the Xperia acro that comes with that awesome 720p Reality Display, as well as Japan-specific features such as infrared port data exchange, mobile wallet and mobile TV.Both the Xperia NX and Xperia acro HD will be available in Japan from this spring. Now you should forget about these two if you live outside of the Land of the rising Sun — Sony will sell them in its own backyard only. That’s not a problem though, since the other two phones (Xperia ion...

Sony BDP-S70 Blu-ray player upscales to 4k resolution, supports Skype webcams

Sony BDP-S70 Blu-ray player upscales to 4k resolution, supports Skype webcams

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG1

Sony just announced its 2012 line of smart Blu-ray players at CES, and the highlight is the BDP-S790, which can upscale "any content" to 4K. We're don't know exactly how that'll look, but we're guessing it'll be a lot like scaling DVD to 1080p — so probably just good enough to hold you over until true 4K content becomes more readily available. The S70 also features built-in Wi-Fi with the usual Netflix, Pandora, and Hulu support, but you can also connect an optional camera and use Skype, and Sony's new Socialize app lets you share to Facebook and Twitter. No pricing yet, but Sony says it'll be out this April.

CES 2012: Razer unveils its PC gaming tablet - Project Fiona

CES 2012: Razer unveils its PC gaming tablet - Project Fiona

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG15

Filed in: TabletsRazer

Last week before the doors of CES were officially cracked open, Razer teased their Project Fiona news in order to get some hype for whatever in the world it was going to end up being. As we predicted, Project Fiona is the company’s first foray into the tablet market, and boy, is it a doozey. Unlike the current flock of tablets on the market, Project Fiona has been specifically designed to play the most popular PC games as it’ll be powered by the Intel Core i7 processor. As you can see from the concept images released today, Project Fiona will sport a 10.1″ 1200×800 display with a full-screen user interface that will support multitouch, force feedback, Dolby 7.1 surround sound, Wi-Fi, Bluetoo...

Victorinox's 1TB USB / eSATA II drive fingers-on

Victorinox's 1TB USB / eSATA II drive fingers-on

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG2

We're still trying to come to terms with just how fantastic it would be to keep a Victorinox 1TB drive on a keyring. Think about that potential for data storage -- and horrendous heart-wrenching sadness if you lost it -- at the flip of a wrist. While the drive will eventually ship in both red and black -- configured as only USB drives or more traditional Swiss Army knives -- we only got our mitts on the safer, less pointy versions. An interesting addition to these drives is a small LCD display on the side that might at some point show meaning information, but sadly ours only boasted the 1TB size. The Swiss Knife masters expect this device to start shipping in the September or October time fr...

Samsung BD-ES6000 Blu-ray: Small package, well connected

Samsung BD-ES6000 Blu-ray: Small package, well connected

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG1

There was a time when any device you connected to your TV had to be the right size of box. Gone are the days of numerous 40cm-wide boxes beneath your TV. Now you may only need Samsung's compact BD-ES6000 smart Blu-ray player.
Samsung has been adding connected features to its TVs and peripherals for a couple of years, but the announcements at CES 2012 in Las Vegas take the company to a new level.
The 3D Blu-ray player not only offers playback of your HD discs, but gives you access to a whole range of smart features too. You can install Samsung Apps, fire up a browser and control it all with a USB keyboard and mouse, should you choose to do so. You'll also be able to control the Blu-ray player...

Sony displays VAIO tablet prototypes; future Windows 8 hardware?

Sony displays VAIO tablet prototypes; future Windows 8 hardware?

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG2

If you blinked while watching our Sony live blog, you likely missed Kazuo Hirai teasing of a few prototype VAIO laptop and tablets. Well, luckily, Sony's displaying them behind glass at its booth. To me, the most interesting of the two is the tablet that slides over a detachable keyboard. It's a lot like the Series 7 Slider Samsung showed last year (it never came to market), but the tablet separates from the base and also has a stylus. There's a short video of it behind glass below, but if I had to guess this really seems like a perfect fit for Windows 8. (VAIO is Sony's Windows-only brand, its tablet is part of its mobile group.) That said, I ran into a Sony executive at the booth, who said...

Corning's Gorilla Glass 2: 20 percent stronger means thinner displays

Corning's Gorilla Glass 2: 20 percent stronger means thinner displays

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG2

We're all acquainted with Corning's damage-resistant Gorilla Glass — it's been used in over 600 million devices since it was released. Tonight at Pepcom, Corning is demonstrating its new Gorilla Glass 2, and it's got 20 percent more damage resistance than the previous generation material, meaning that device manufacturers can either make their displays thinner or stronger. For those that go with the former, their devices are going to be lighter, with better touch transmission and optical properties. Initially we can count on Gorilla Glass 2 being in new devices from Asus, Acer, and LG phones, as well as Sony Bravia TV sets, with likely many more to come.

MySpace TV social viewing to launch on Panasonic Viera HDTVs

MySpace TV social viewing to launch on Panasonic Viera HDTVs

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Panasonic

Well, this is a bit bizarre. Panasonic just brought MySpace on stage at CES to take the wraps off MySpace TV — an app that will be offered on the just-updated Viera line of Panasonic plasma HDTVs. Smartphone and tablet iterations are also planned for the service, which "fully integrates social and television in new ways that add a dimension to content discovery and evolve the traditional television experience" according to the companies. Owners of the upcoming Viera Connect-enabled TVs will be able to download the software, which MySpace says will initially be comprised of music-related content before expanding to movies, sports, and news in the future. Apart from social networking-inspired ...

Watch all Your 2D Shows in 3D. Could be Awesome. Or Nauseating.

Bummed out because you don't have enough 3D movies and you're sick of watching Avatard? Maybe you need a new TV. Like Philips's new 3D HDTV, which will take your 2D movies and TV shows and make them 3D. It's coming right at us!
According to Philips, you can not only make a 2D show or movie 3D, but you can even "adjust the experience." Not 100-percent sure what that means, but I'm hoping that means that I'll be able to push explosions about three feet from the screen. As expected, the TV is super thin—the screen is only 9mm thick and features a silver bezel instead the usual black bezel. Look for this 55-incher at the end of the year for around $1,700.
