According to Reuters, the EU has given Sony the green light to buy out its joint venture partner Ericsson. The terms of the deal, announced in October, call for Sony to pay 1.05 billion EUR ($1.47 billion USD) for Ericsson's half of the company. Sony will be using its name on new phones and even displayed some at the recent CES in Las Vegas, including the much talked about Sony Xperia S. The Japanese based company previously said that it would start removing Ericsson from handsets in the middle of this year at the same time that the split becomes final.
The joint venture's last quarterly earnings was indicative of the problems that led to the split. Sony Ericsson lost 207 million EUR in Q4 (...

Last week, heavily redacted documents were released regarding an antitrust lawsuit that the US Department of Justice had brought and settled against Googe, Apple, Adobe, Intel and other companies back in 2010. Even in the heavily redacted documents, evidence was seen that the companies had been engaged in collusion. Essentially, the companies all had informal agreements to not hire or "poach" each others' employees.

The latest word on the Google-Motorola Mobility merger

Posted on Jan 30, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: MotorolaGoogle

Both Motorola Mobility and Google shareholders have voted to allow the purchase of the former by the latter for $12.5 billion. But that doesn't end the approvals necessary to get the deal closed. Besides the shareholders, two countries have signed off the deal, Turkey and Russia. Antitrust clearance, or waiting period expirations, are required for the U.S. Department of Justice, European Commission, Canada, China and Israel. In those countries, the deal can be approved by having the appropriate official sign the proper paperwork, or by letting a certain period of time go by without raising an objection to the merger.
While the waiting period has expired in China and in the U.S., both countri...

eBay Motors app gets image recognition for ID-ing cars

Posted on Jan 30, 2012 by MG1

We know that eBay is really taking mobile seriously and the company just released an update to its eBay Motors iPhone app which will let you snap a picture of a car, have it identified for you and then be able to buy inventory for it.
This image-recognition technology will probably make for a great show-off feature but there’s a practical reason for it too. Sometimes, it’s just easier to snap a picture than to type in your car, the make, model and year. Additionally, the app will include some live-streamed content from the Rolex 24 at Daytona this weekend.
Other features of the eBay Motors app include:

Apple's mobile web share reportedly slid in Q4 as Android took No.1 spot

Posted on Jan 30, 2012 by MG1

Although Apple outsold all Android vendors in the fourth quarter, the Cupertino-based company’s share of mobile internet usage is reportedly beginning to slide. An analysis of last year’s Internet usage shows that in the United States, the proportion of Android mobile web visitors overtook Apple users by the end of the year, according to 51Degrees.mobi. The share of Apple’s iOS web traffic in December fell to 34.1%, while Android increased to 36.6%. In Europe, Apple remained ahead with 42.6% however, despite an increase in Android traffic that pushed the platform to 25.5% by the end of 2011. RIM’s BlackBerry devices remained stable in both regions with roughly 9% of all mobile web usage. “Th...

HTC Titan II passes through the FCC

HTC Titan II passes through the FCC

Posted on Jan 30, 2012 by MG1

We have some good news for those of you waiting on the HTC Titan II, the LTE version of the Windows Phone 7 phablet. The phone cleared the FCC with AT&T-flavored radios, and appears ready (by which we mean “legal”) to launch.
Of course marketing plans and product availability also drive the decision on when to release a new phone, but if the rumored March 18th release date holds up, the federals government won’t stand in the way of its release.
In addition to screen real estate that rivals Texas, the Titan II will be packing a larger battery (presumably to fend off the LTE juice-drain phenomena) and a 16 megapixel camera that will be tricked out with all the bells and whistles.

Twitter announces ability to censor content by region

Posted on Jan 30, 2012 by MG1

Twitter announced recently that it now has the ability to, and will begin to, censor content on the social network by country. “As we continue to grow internationally, we will enter countries that have different ideas about the contours of freedom of expression,” the company said in a blog post Thursday. “Some differ so much from our ideas that we will not be able to exist there.” Twitter gave France and Germany as examples, two countries that ban pro-Nazi rhetoric from being posted on the Internet. Previously, Twitter would have had to delete specific content worldwide in order to prevent it from being visible, but it can now remove content on a country-by-country basis. Read on for more.

Management changes at Google Wallet are afoot

Posted on Jan 30, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Google

Google Wallet launched a couple months ago, but it hasn’t made much of an impact on consumer shopping so far. It’s early days yet for mobile payments, but things seem to be hopping in the management team lately. Last week Google’s VP of commerce, Stephanie Tilenius, was moved into an international role, causing Osama Bedier, VP of Payments, to step in to lead Google Wallet. And now, according to a report on All Things D, Vikas Gupta, Google’s head of consumer payments has resigned.
Are the moves related? Google isn’t saying naturally; a Google spokesman would only confirm Gupta’s departure, adding that they wish him well. Gupta came on board when Google purchased his company, Social Gold, wh...

Update: The Samsung GALAXY Tab 11.6 tested by Android and Me had a dual-core 2GHz processor, not a quad-core processor as we originally reported. We thank our loyal readers for bringing this to our attention
Earlier today we passed along the word that Samsung was weighing its options when it comes to announcing the Samsung Galaxy S III at the MWC in Barcelona next month. While no one knows if the smartphone will be presented at the show, how about Samsung's new high-end tablet? Android and Me is saying that at a closed door media event at CES earlier this month, they had a chance to play with a device that just might be a Samsung GALAXY Tab 11.6 with a dual-core 2GHz processor under the hood...

Google addresses concerns over new privacy policy

Posted on Jan 30, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Google

Earlier this week, Google announced that the company would combine individual privacy policies from a variety of its products into one main policy. The idea behind it was to provide users with a “more intuitive Google experience.” Critics of the change are worried that Google is now collecting more data than ever, however, leading members of the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee to demand answers. Read on for more.
The search giant claims that it is not collecting more data and the new terms merely clarify how existing data is used to improve the Google experience. “We’re making things simpler and we’re trying to be upfront about it. Period,” said Google’s policy manager Betsy Masiell...

Up until this week, Google Calendar and Windows Phone didn’t play together nicely. You could only sync one Google calendar per account and had to use a JavaScript hack to sync more. Thankfully, those days are gone now that Google updated its Sync product to let Windows Phone users select multiple Google calendars. Customers with a Windows Phone can navigate to m.google.com/sync on their phone and setup the calendars they want yo sync. Besides Calendar Sync, Google also lets you configure which addresses you want to send mail as if you use custom addresses in Gmail.

Samsung begins sampling the Exynos 5250, mass production kicks off in Q2 2012

Samsung reported rock solid quarterly results, but still couldn’t beat Apple’s historic smartphone sales. It has some exciting chips in the pipeline, though, and the one we’re most excited about is the Samsung Exynos 5250 which Samsung says has already begun sampling with mass production expected to kick off in the second quarter of 2012.
The chipset comes with a dual-core Cortex-A15 setup with each of the cores clocked at 2.0GHz. The Cortex-A15 is a huge leap over the A9, and Samsung claims it will double its performance and possibly outdo even existing quad-core chips. The new chip supports screens with resolution of up to the staggering 2560 x 1600 pixels (WQXGA).

Cell phone users in North Korea to be punished as 'war criminals'

Cell phone users in North Korea to be punished as 'war criminals'

Posted on Jan 30, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Cell Phones

The lifestyle of citizens in North Korea has been of major controversy in recent news, and now the government is revoking even more privileges from the country’s natives — privileges that affect the use of beloved mobile phones. In the 100-day mourning period after the death of former country leader Kim Jong-il, anyone caught using a cell phone will be punished as a “war criminal.”
The ban is presumably to strengthen the power of new leader Kim Jong-un. It’s almost as if Jong-un wants to let his people know that he will follow in his father’s footsteps with strong, authoritative power — ergo, he’s no softy. The prohibition of cell phones also weakens the citizens’ ability to plan a departure...
