It's no secret that Microsoft is planning on integrating Xbox LIVE into Windows 8, but rumors are now swirling that Xbox 360 games might actually be playable on the next version of Redmond's OS. References to "XBOX_360_SYSTEM_CRASH" have been found in the kernel code -- an odd bit of text to show up in software that's not designed to run on the 360's PowerPC CPU. There are, of course, other, more mundane possibilities -- like the ability to remotely control your console to trigger update and game downloads, or to receive notifications from the machine on your desktop. Ballmer knows the fastest way to get people talking about Microsoft is if he slags off the competition, which is exactly what he did yesterday. Boasting, he compared 350m sold PCs in the last year with their rival selling just 20m.
That rival being Apple, we can only presume, with TNW looking into sales data and figuring that Mac sales amounted to 15.25m—some way off what Ballmer quoted, but near enough that it must be them—maybe with a hit of Linux, too.

Ballmer talks up "dawning" of Windows tablets, as Windows 7 continues to sell well

Ballmer has said that Windows 8, the company’s next version of its operating system will be the “dawning of Windows slates,” at the company’s annual Worldwide Partners Conference.
Taking to the stage to talk all things Microsoft, including admitting that Windows Phone 7 sales are still small, the CEO said of the new OS:
"Windows 8 really does represent a true re-imagining of Windows PCs and the dawning of Windows slates."
But it’s not all future, future, future. Ballmer also used the conference to also confirm that the company had sold over 400 million Windows 7 licences around the world, and find time to take a pop at Apple and Linux:

Microsoft redesigns Microsoft Download Center, 1 billion visitors per year

Microsoft has released an updated design for the Microsoft Download Center. At the same time, the software giant made a point to reveal that it gets 1 billion unique visitors to the website every year.
The announcement was curiously made via Microsoft's Twitter account (via Neowin): "1 Billion visitors a year and it just got better: New version of the @Microsoft Download Center is now live: http://t.co/Oy4tqhI."
For the record, the 1 billion people per year number is equivalent to over 83.3 million people per month and 2.78 million people per day. That's a huge amount of users visiting a website that has just one purpose: offering up Microsoft content to download. It's thus no surprise that ...

Microsoft could make as much from Android as Google, if it signs licensing deals with all manufacturers

Microsoft is currently wrangling with Android cell phone makers to pay up licensing fees for publicly unknown features or components of Google's mobile OS, for which it probably has filed patents since the dawn of WinMo. Its most popular licensee is HTC, which coughs up $5 per device to Microsoft, and it also signed up Velocity Micro and General Dynamics for the noble cause of padding its bottomline.
The big win, however, will come with Samsung, which might end up paying even more, and, considering it is the world's second largest cell phone manufacturer, this should result in a good chunk of money for Microsoft. Currently Redmond is haggling with Samsung over the terms of the licensing deal...

We know Microsoft’s retail partners have not been doing the best job selling Windows Phone 7, but when they are trying to be informative and still get it wrong, it is no wonder their sales people get it so wrong.

Microsoft Wants $15 from Samsung For Each Android Phone

Microsoft has demanded that Samsung pay it $15 in licensing fees for each Android-based smartphone that it sells. Microsoft owns a number of patented technologies used in Google's mobile operating system, and has been seeking fees from Android handset makers. HTC and other phone makers have reached agreements with Microsoft over the patented technology. Reuters reports that Samsung will push to reduce the per-handset charge to $10 in conjunction with new agreements regarding Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 platform. Samsung has sold millions of smartphones based on Android.

Taking the highly competitive smartphone market into perspective, one would assume that Android's steady growth would be a bad thing for Microsoft and its Windows Phone platform. However, this may not be necessarily true as the company is actually raking in some big money from other manufacturers' Android-powered devices.
HTC, for example, has to pay royalties to Microsoft for each Android device sold due to the fact that the latter holds a number of patents involved in Google's platform. However, the $5 per device sold, which Microsoft is getting from HTC, seem nothing compared to the $15 per device that the maker of Windows Mobile has just demanded from Samsung.
