Kik sends passwords and messages without encryption
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows Phone 7
Kik, the popular and free messaging service which has just arrived on Windows Phone 7 is a great service that works very well.
Raphael Riviera from WithinWindows has however analysed the data flowing from the app to the internet and discovered the software sends everything, including passwords and messages in plain text.
This means when you are on WIFI at work or cafe for example, anyone with a network analyser on the same network will be able to see your messages, get your full name, user name, email address, password and possibly even impersonate you.
This is a apparently a flaw which has been in existence for at least a year, suggesting the company does not really care about security.

Windows Phone is first platform to get AmazonFresh app for grocery shopping
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftAmazonWindows Phone 7
This app is sort of interesting, but the concept is certainly not new. There have been online grocery shopping services before and they have all eventually gone under. Amazon is trying the online grocery thing out again and looking to get the service onto smartens with a new app. You might think that the place to start would be to make the app for the iPhone or Android smartphones. Amazon has chosen Windows Phone as the place to start with the AmazonFresh app.
AmazonFresh is the name of the Amazon grocery shopping service. This actually makes sense when you realize that the grocery delivery service is only in Seattle right now. Seattle is home to Microsoft and you can bet that compared to ot...

Microsoft testing white space wireless Internet in UK
Like UnlikeFiled in: Microsoft
Microsoft has partnered with the BBC, BT, and British Sky Broadcasting to trial the delivery of mobile broadband Internet by utilizing empty radio spectrum normally used to deliver television signals. The so-called white space spectrum could be utilized to deliver additional mobile broadband services to supplement existing services struggling to keep pace with smartphone and tablet adoption.
Microsoft has developed the experimental technology at its Redmond headquarters, which uses the spectrum in the frequency range reserved for digital TV broadcasting. Its trial is taking place in Cambridge in the UK, which will be closely followed by UK and foreign regulators.
The aim of the current tria...

How Windows 8 touch relies on IE10
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 8
Is the full-screen touch interface for Windows 8 'just a shell' on top of Windows?
Not really; there isn't an application running like Media Center that you could shut down and it isn't just a browser – this is another mode for the interface that you can switch in and out of. But it is the browser that powers it.
Apps for the immersive Windows 8 interface are written in HTML5, JavaScript and CSS (and presumably, Silverlight – this is the IE10 engine and there's no reason for it not to run plug-ins) and packaged up in an AppX container.
In fact, if you dig into the web standards support that Microsoft has added to IE10, it's clear to see that despite the resemblance to the Silverlight-powered...

Microsoft to unveil new Xbox at E3 2012
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesMicrosoftXBOX 360
A source with knowledge of Microsoft’s plans within the company’s Entertainment and Devices Division has confirmed with BGR that Microsoft intends to unveil its next-generation Xbox console at E3 2012 next summer. The source is not aware of Microsoft’s launch plans for the new Xbox, which we are told has been in development since 2006. Microsoft has sold nearly 54.4 million Xbox 360 units since the console’s introduction in November 2005. The video game system is currently the ninth most popular gaming console of all time behind Nintendo’s original NES and just ahead of Sony’s PlayStation 3, which has sold 51 million units to date.

HTC claims Windows Phone 7 dominance, sells 1 in 2 WP7 handsets
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftHTCWindows Phone 7
There have been much speculation regarding the contribution each Windows Phone 7 OEM makes to the ecosystem.
Now HTC’s senior executive vice president Fred Liu told CENS HTC is the major player in the Windows Phone 7 market, selling 1 out of every 2 Windows Phones sold.
This is of course despite 4 other OEMs, including giants like LG and Samsung, vying for the business.
HTC also went on to say they sell 2 out of every 10 Android phones. This allows us to see that little more than 10% of HTC’s business is from Microsoft’s OS, which is clearly not much*.
Windows Phone 7 therefore suffers from being dominated by one OEM who is not deeply invested in the OS. With Nokia jumping in head first...

Microsoft inks patent deal with small Android manufacturer
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftGoogleAndroid
Microsoft has secured another avenue of income from its smartphone patents, as it has signed a deal with General Dynamics Itronix, a relatively unknown rugged device manufacturer. Microsoft inked a deal with HTC last year that allows HTC to use Microsoft's patents in its Android smartphones.
The terms of the Itronix deal have not been disclosed, but it is evident from the statements that the company is paying Microsoft for the privilege of using its patents. The companies' statement on the agreement says "Although the contents of the agreement have not been disclosed, the parties indicate that Microsoft will receive royalties from General Dynamics Itronix under the agreement."

Microsoft updates Hotmail with more signature options, Gmail and Yahoo Mail keyboard shortcuts
Like UnlikeFiled in: Microsoft
Okay, it's not as titillating as the time Microsoft added conversation view to Hotmail, but the outfit did just freshen up its email service with a handful of helpful tweaks. Topping the list is an assortment of shortcuts, including the ability to right click a message to reply, reply all, or forward (you could already do this for other things, like marking something as unread). Hotmail also now responds to some additional Gmail- and Yahoo Mail-specific keyboard shortcuts, such as "#" for deleting messages -- a Gmail trick. And the company is none too subtle about admitting it wants the service to be user-friendly for folks if -- or when -- they switch from Google or Yahoo. Rounding out the ...

Microsoft revamps Windows Live SkyDrive with HTML5
Like UnlikeFiled in: Microsoft
Microsoft has launched a new version of its Windows Live SkyDrive website that is faster and easier to navigate thanks to the use of HTML5 and hardware acceleration. The new SkyDrive is rolling out gradually, as there are 100 million people who use the Web service according to Microsoft, so you may not have it yet.
In terms of performance, the software giant says it improved many core tasks and scenarios (clicking folders and navigating photo albums should go from 6-9 seconds down to 100-300 milliseconds) but it still plans to address additional core tasks in the future. The company also says it evaluated and removed anything that slowed the experience down or got in the way of a fast site.

Nokia demonstrates its very first Windows Phone device
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftNOKIAWindows Phone 7
Wow, Nokia has been making quite a lot of headlines lately. Only days after the announcement of the Nokia N9 – a supposedly “market disrupting” device powered by the MeeGo platform, the company has lifted the veil off its very first Windows Phone handset. It was Stephen Elop himself who introduced the smartphone in front of an unsuspecting audience, after which Jukka Kiiskinen, a services sales manager at Nokia, demonstrated Microsoft's mobile platform running on the device.
The smartphone is only known by its Sea Ray codename so far, and if Nokia's plans unfold as expected, it should hit the market by the end of this year. Little details have been mentioned about the device, but what we kno...

Leaked Build Shows Further iPad-ification Of Windows 8
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 8
Reaction to Microsoft's upcoming Windows 8 OS have been decidedly mixed. The move towards a single OS for both PCs and mobile devices has angered developers and end users alike: worried developers fear that their years of .Net and Silverlight mastery may fall to the wayside as Microsoft shifts focus to standards like CSS and HTML5, and hardcore PC owners hate the idea of iPad-ifying the desktop environment. The latest build of Windows 8 has leaked onto the Net and should only stoke the mixed usage-hating fires.

Windows Much Safer After Microsoft Killed Autorun
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 7
Autorun is one way for malware to trick a user into installing some nefarious software from removable storage media. An executable could reside on a USB flash drive and, when inserted into a PC, would prompt the user to click the autorun file.
Back in February, Microsoft released an update that curbed autorun behavior for all supported Windows platforms stretching back to Windows XP SP3 to Windows Vista SP2 (Windows 7 already had a "fixed" autorun behavior and Windows XP SP2 was no longer supported through updates).

Latest Windows 8 Leak Shows New Keyboard
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 8
After seeing the tile-based Windows 8 UI preview that Microsoft showed earlier this month, it's clear that tablets and touch-screen devices are going to be a bigger consideration than ever.
Microsoft will have to design a text input system for those running Windows 8 without a physical keyboard, and that means a virtual on-screen keyboard.
Winrumors has posted a video from the latest leaked Windows 8 build 7989 that features a new keyboard that features a split variation with emoticon support and predictive text input.
