Apple is working on a low-cost iPhone model for release later this year, according to supply chain sources in touch with the China Times. The new hardware may allegedly ship around the same time as a sixth-generation high-end iPhone. The main incentive is said to be getting a better foothold in the low-end smartphone market, since even the iPhone 3GS is $375 unlocked, making it far more expensive than competing Android devices.

Google's spring cleaning ends support for BlackBerry Sync, Picasa plug-ins for iPhoto, and more

Google's spring cleaning ends support for BlackBerry Sync, Picasa plug-ins for iPhoto, and more

Posted on Apr 23, 2012 by MG3

Google has gotten in the habit of doing a seasonal cleaning of its many products and services, and this spring is no exception. Probably the biggest news is that Google's officially discontinuing its Google Sync for BlackBerry app, which has historically kept calendars and contacts in sync for BlackBerry users. As of June 1st, the app won't be available for download anymore, though Google notes that you'll still be able to use it if you already have it installed. Google helpfully suggests switching to the standard BlackBerry Internet Service, or trying its Google Apps connector for BlackBerry — however, that software requires BlackBerry Enterprise Server (standard or express), which might be...

Filed in: Cell PhonesApple

A new report out of Korea claims Apple will swap out the glass back on its next iPhone for a super-tough alloy called Liquidmetal.
Citing industry sources, Korea IT News reported on Wednesday that Apple's next-generation iPhone will be made of "zirconium, titanium, nickel, copper and so forth." This should give the device a "surface smooth like liquid." The material would offer the iPhone some benefits – it is light, but also highly resistant to external impacts and corrosion.
Rumors that Apple will give the iPhone a metal back have been floating around since last year, even before the launch of the iPhone 4S. Last March, Taiwan's Economic Daily News said complaints of scratching and difficu...

Apple jabs new Samsung Tab in Germany

Apple jabs new Samsung Tab in Germany

Posted on Apr 23, 2012 by MG3

It appears that Apple is not satisfied with the changes Samsung has made to its Galaxy Tab line over in Germany this month as the Galaxy Tab 10.1N, modified from the 10.1 with no N, still infringes on the iPad’s form and purpose – so they say. This same claim for the original Galaxy Tab has already taken hold in some other parts of the world and Apple has indeed succeeding in banning the 10.1 version of Samsung’s tablet line for brief periods of time in the past – this time though, it’s after Samsung took steps to avoid such a suit specifically. Will the Tab 10.1N, with its front-facing speakers and all, be able to avoid the Apple hammer in Deutschland?

New iPhone Unlock Should Work With Any Model

New iPhone Unlock Should Work With Any Model

iPhone unlocks are usually a tetchy experience – you have to have the right firmware on the right model iPhone at the right time. Now, however, thanks to a method that spoofs the activation server, you can unlock almost any iPhone semi-permanently.
The system, called Subscriber Artificial Module or SAM, requires a jailbroken iPhone and Cydia. To run it, you de-activate your phone, insert a new SIM, and then activate SAM. SAM spoofs the activation process, convincing the phone that it has been unlocked properly and without issues.

Report: Next iPhone to Include In-Cell Touch Panels

Posted on Apr 23, 2012 by MG3

Filed in: Cell PhonesApple

It's not hard to tell when a new iPhone is coming - just pay attention to the increased flow of rumors leaking from Asia, where the device is manufactured. The latest story claims that the next iteration of the Apple smartphone will use new, cutting edge in-cell touch panels.
The report cropped up in Taiwan-based Digitimes, which said that "an improvement in yield rates of the in-cell touch panels at Sharp and TMD has persuaded Apple to choose to cooperate with Japan-based panel makers." The new touch panel approach would eliminate the need for an external module or film, thus reducing the weight of the device and bringing down the overall thickness of the panel array. As history has shown, ...

Apple responded fairly quickly to news that more than 600,000 Mac computers were infected with a trojan virus called “Flashback.” One week after the massive botnet was discovered, Apple issued an update fixing the Java vulnerability that allowed Flashback to infect the machines, as well as a removal tool for affected machines. Despite the company’s efforts, Symantec stated on Tuesday evening that approximately 140,000 OS X PCs were still infected with the virus at that time. “The statistics from our sinkhole are showing declining numbers on a daily basis,” the company wrote on its blog. “However, we had originally believed that we would have seen a greater decline in infections at this point...

World Wide Web inventor Sir Tim Berners-Lee has fired a thinly-veiled broadside at Apple, insisting that closed app ecosystems and locked down computing environments are stymieing innovation.
In a lengthy interview in The Guardian, Berners-Lee continued his crusade against closed systems, expressing his disappointment that the era Steve Jobs described as 'Post-PC' has shut down space for innovation.
He also referenced the oft-called 'walled gardens' that prevents users from making completely free and unbiased choices in the software that they use.

The head of Apple has reportedly been meeting with people at PC gaming giant Valve, right at a time when Valve has been the subject of rampant rumors. The company posted job ads for what appears to be a hardware initiative or at least something that sounds like a complete departure from its long-standing traditional business model. So Apple having some sort of position in that would be interesting to say the least.

As promised, Apple rolled out a Java update today designed to combat the Flashback infection afflicting some 600,000 Mac users.
The Java security update removes common Flashback variants and disables the auto-running of applets, which is how Flashback infiltrated systems. To ensure you're protected, simply download and apply the latest patches from Software Update.
In related news, Kaspersky announced today that the company is suspending its own Flashback removal program. Not because of Apple's official release but because Kaspersky found the tool itself was making unacceptable alterations to the system. The Flashfake Removal Tool reportedly took the liberty of changing auto-start configurat...

Apple sued by parents over in-app charges

Apple is being sued by parents of young Apple iPhone users who claim that the tech titan is unfairly profiting from in-app charges. While many apps are free, of course, some in-app purchases can cost hundreds of dollars. A recent study showed that the average U.S.developer is making $63,885.34 in revenue thanks to in-app purchases from Apple iPhone users, just in the first month of being listed in the App Store. The plaintiffs complain that the system makes it too easy for kids to run up huge bills without getting approval from their parents. Apple has asked for the court to throw out the case, saying that in-app purchasing can now be disabled. Judge US District Judge Edward Davila ruled tha...

While speaking with The Guardian, Brin said there are ”very powerful forces that have lined up against the open Internet on all sides and around the world. I am more worried than I have been in the past. It’s scary.” The executive pointed to the “walled-garden” philosophy that sees companies like Apple and Facebook maintain tight control over third-party software on their respective platforms as the cause for his concerns.
