Apple's updated MacBook Pro rumored to arrive this summer will feature Nvidia graphics alongside Intel's Ivy Bridge processors, a switch from the AMD GPUs in the current models. The news comes to us directly from a trusted source, and it's further corroborated by Joanna Stern at ABC News, whose sources also tell her that the new machines will indeed feature high resolution Retina Displays.
While we can't yet confirm what specific Nvidia chip Apple will use, a 9to5 Mac report from earlier today located references to the GeForce GT 650M, a 28nm chip built on the "Kepler" architecture that should offer similar power and performance efficiency to the well-regarded 28nm GeForce GT 640M. We recent...

Redsn0w 0.9.11b1 now allows post-iPad 2 devices to downgrade to an older firmware

Posted on May 14, 2012 by MG1

Per usual, the Dev-Team whiz-kids have been hard at work trying to make your jailbroken iOS life a tad bit easier. This time around, MuscleNerd & Co. have outed their latest revision of RedSn0w (0.9.11b1), allowing folks using the new iPad, iPad 2 and iPhone 4S to downgrade to lower firmwares for jailbreaking purposes -- a feature others have been enjoying for some time now. As expected, you'd still need those saved SHSH blobs from the previous firmware in order to do so, and if your device depends on an unofficial unlock, it's recommended (with a few exceptions) to steer clear since this method will upgrade your baseband. Speaking of, the Dev-Team also notes you should stick with an earlier...

Foxconn Technology Group founder and chief executive Terry Gou has reportedly gone on record in stating that his company will soon begin manufacturing a television for Apple. Production has not yet begun, China Daily reports, and the electronics manufacturing giant is currently preparing its facilities for Apple’s HDTV. The site claims Gou made the comments during a press conference in Shanghai on Friday. Apple’s long rumored HDTV, or “iTV” as it is often called, will reportedly look much like the company’s current LED Cinema Display. It is said to feature an aluminum casing, iOS, voice-powered remote control features courtesy of Siri, and an iSight camera for FaceTime video chats. Earlier r...

Samsung and Apple file to drop claims to get trial started on time

Samsung and Apple file to drop claims to get trial started on time

Posted on May 09, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: SamsungApple

Last week both Apple and Samsung were told by Judge Lucy Koh that if each wanted to get their trial started on time, the number of claims from each side had to be reduced. At first, courtroom analysts figured Apple would be more interested in slowing things down, but with the introduction of the Samsung Galaxy S III, it seems Apple would really like to get a verdict in the case. To get things started on July 30th, both manufacturers decided to offer to drop about half their claims with Apple letting go of all of its trademark claims. While it does sound like a sacrifice for both sides, Apple wants the dismissal to be without prejudice meaning that it assert these dismissed claims at another ...

Posted on May 08, 2012 by MG1

Apple released iOS 5.1.1 for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad this afternoon. You can download the update over the air by going to Settings —> General —> Software Update or by connecting your iOS device to iTunes.

Nokia's Lumia 900 is the best smartphone in the world — in one important usability aspect, anyhow. The DisplayMate labs have been busy collating viewability data on mobile device displays and the results rank the Lumia 900 as the best performer. In particular, the DisplayMate tests were concerned with how devices handle increases in ambient light, a regularly-occurring challenge for anyone wanting to use a phone or a tablet while actually on the move.

US judge sanctions Samsung, kills important defense against Apple

US judge sanctions Samsung, kills important defense against Apple

Posted on May 07, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: SamsungApple

US Magistrate Judge Paul Grewal imposed a severe and rarely used penalty yesterday on Samsung in its case against Apple by eliminating one of Samsung's infringement defenses from the lawsuit. The defense was an important one: Samsung had argued that its recent implementation of the "blue glow" feature in TouchWiz is a non-infringing workaround to Apple's patent — US 7,469,381 — on the iOS "scrollback" behavior that displays a background texture when you scroll beyond the edge of a document or webpage. The court's reasoning for yanking this defense is hard to argue with.

OS X Lion update accidentally outs user passwords in plain text, stumbles over FileVault

OS X Lion update accidentally outs user passwords in plain text, stumbles over FileVault

Posted on May 07, 2012 by MG1

Are you an avid user of OS X's FileVault encryption and running a recently updated version of Lion? It may be time to consider changing your passwords. According to security researcher David Emry, users who used FileVault prior to upgrading to 10.7.3 may be able to find their password in a system-wide debug log file, stored in plain text outside of the encrypted area. This puts the password at risk of being read by other users or enterprising cyber criminals, Emry explains, and even opens the door for new flaw-specific malware. FileVault 2, on the other hand, seems to be unaffected by the bug. The community doesn't currently have a way to fight the flaw without disabling FileVault, so users ...

Jeong Wook Oh of Microsoft's Malware Protection Center reports that his team has stumbled across a new piece of malware targeting Apple OS X computers. It exploits a remote code execution vulnerability in the Office productivity suite which Microsoft actually patched back in June 2009 (MS09-027). Almost three years later, not all machines have the patch installed, thus leading to the spread of this new hacker tool.

Apple wants to prevent Steve Jobs testimony from being made public

Apple wants to prevent Steve Jobs testimony from being made public

Posted on May 03, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Apple

It turns out that smartphone manufacturers aren’t the only companies that sue one another. We know, that’s shocking, isn’t it? As Apple has learned over the years, music companies also sue people, including Apple. Apple is embroiled in one such case right now, where companies that own, among other things, the rights to Eminem’s music albums, are asserting that Apple still owes them a lot of money.
We have no idea who is in a better position there, but of possible interest to our readers is the fact that Apple is moving to block the release of video testimony of Steve Jobs (and some other senior executives) to the public. The testimony apparently contains many of the details of Apple’s negoti...

Apple rejecting apps with Dropbox functionality

Apple rejecting apps with Dropbox functionality

Posted on May 02, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Apple

Apple famously doesn’t allow apps to have links to external subscriptions or purchases, instead requiring developers to adhere to the in-app purchasing system. That way, Apple can take its 30% cut, and all would be right with the world. Is Dropbox starting to face the same problem? Developers are reporting that their apps are being rejected for including Dropbox functionality.
Currently, if a third party app is using the Dropbox SDK, it kicks the user over to a site for authentication. However, the same page also contains a link that allows users to create new accounts, something that Apple is frowning on. While Dropbox at first removed the link to account creation via the desktop site, apps...
