F-Secure provides free Flashback removal tool for Mac users

F-Secure has come to the aid of Apple Mac owners infected with the Flashback malware, announcing a free removal script for OS X. At its peak on April 6, an estimated 600,000 systems running OS X were said to be infected.
Apple itself has said it is already working on a tool to remove the malware, but given the company's slow turnaround of the critical updates issued by Oracle in February it would appear security firms were unwilling to wait.
The new tool by F-Secure will detect and repair the damage done by all of the common types of Flashback malware. It is offered as a free stand-alone Apple script application and not part of their antivirus scanner. Using it will reverse the damage and th...

New rumors mixed with more concrete details has pointed to Apple actively testing iTunes 11. Test build screenshots slipped to 9to5 purportedly have a central iCloud panel that would control all iTunes-related iCloud features, such as iTunes Match or device backups. The build would also have iOS 6 compatibility, although it might not be necessary and could be preceded by a 10.x update instead.
Apple's iTunes Store revamp was also supposedly being timed for a launch in the second half of the year. The company's acquisition of Chomp had led to a specific iTunes content discovery task force, according to the rumor.

Apple's A5X processor for the next iPhone in testing, new iPod touch to get a major overhaul

Apple's A5X processor for the next iPhone in testing, new iPod touch to get a major overhaul

Apple is reportedly using an iPhone 4/4S housing to test the performance of its new A5X processor, which is destined for its upcoming iPhone. The chip is said to be a scaled down version of the graphics-intense unit in the new iPad, as the iPhone doesn't of course need to have such a pixel-cruncher in it, as its display will be smaller.
That's in line with the reporting from last month that the A5X won't come to this year's iPhone as it is. The amount of RAM will get increased to 1GB in the new iPhone as well, though. The internal codename for the prototype phone with the new iPhone A5X chip is N96, but it is too early to tell if it will stick around like that.

Rob Schmitz is the chief of American Public Media’s Marketplace China bureau and he recently got in the limelight by taking a big part in exposing the lies of Mike Dorsay in its “Agony and ecstasy of Steve Jobs.” He appeared on This American Life, and his involvement got him direct and very rare access inside Apple’s Foxconn factories.
Schmitz is preparing a bigger piece about the conditions of workers he saw and while generally he describes their job as very mundane and talks about some issues with supervisors, he reassures us that the Foxconn factory looks more like a college campus rather than a slave camp.

Tim Cook received $378 million for 2011 but will have to stay at Apple to collect most of it

Sure, Apple CEO Tim Cook is rich, but you won't see him with the deep pocketed crew on Shark Tank; at least, not yet. According to the New York Times, $376 million of the $378 million that Cook received for his performance last year was awarded in the form of a one-time stock grant. But before Cook can start dialing his broker, the grant does not fully vest unless Cook stays with Apple for ten years. According to the Times, half the grant vests in 2016 while the remainder vests in 2021.
The CEO's 2011 salary of $900,000 would make most of us very happy, but is below the median pay for a CEO in the States which is a whopping $14.4 million. With other compensation, the Apple CEO took home $1.8...

Facebook, Dropbox login credentials vulnerable to theft on iOS and Android

Facebook, Dropbox login credentials vulnerable to theft on iOS and Android

Posted on Apr 09, 2012 by MG1

Security researcher Gareth Wright "stumbled into" a way to make one iOS or Android device think it's logged into the Facebook account of another. Apparently, the method also works with Dropbox, The Next Web reports. By simply copying a "plist" from your iOS or Android device and pasting it into the same directory on another device (using a free Mac app like iExplorer), anyone can easily make Facebook and Dropbox (and presumably some other apps) think they are you. It's that easy. Facebook released a statement on the matter:

Apple makes second attempt at Trojan Java block

Apple makes second attempt at Trojan Java block

Posted on Apr 09, 2012 by MG1

Apple does not specify what changes have been made between the two versions, and in fact the related support documentation still refers to the initial release. Still, if you’re running Lion then you should update to the latest iteration as soon as possible.
The other suggestion is that Mac users – and their Windows counterparts, for that matter – disable Java on their computers. F-Secure gives instructions on how to do that in OS X, but it’s generally a case of going to Applications > Utilities > Java Preferences and then deselecting anything showing up under the “General” tab.

Apple will reportedly unveil new iMacs with Core i5, i7 CPUs in June or July

Posted on Apr 06, 2012 by MG1

Apple is reportedly planning to refresh its iMac family of computers with Intel’s 22nm-based Core i5 and Core i7 Ivy Bridge processors in June or July, How To Arena reported on Wednesday, citing a “reliable tipster” in Apple’s supply chain. The Cupertino-based company is also reportedly ramping up production in preparation for thinner 13- and 15-inch MacBook Pro models, which will use the same Ivy Bridge processors. Previous rumors have suggested that Apple’s redesigned iMac would feature an anti-reflective glass display, and it should be slimmer and lighter than the current units. Apple’s iMac lineup was last updated in May 2011 with Intel’s Sandy Bridge processors, a high-speed Thunderbolt...

Apple can decode and access anything stored in iCloud

Apple can decode and access anything stored in iCloud

Users of Apple’s iCloud service are protected by industry-leading protection – 128 bit encryption, data transmission via SSL, the whole nine yards. In short, it’s very unlikely that any outside party could ever access your iCloud data without your permission.
Unless they asked Apple.
A recent security analysis conducted on behalf of Ars Technica has demonstrated that Apple keeps a key that lets them decode anything stored in iCloud at any time. Moreover, the Terms and Conditions you sign when you elect to use iCloud show that Apple expressly keeps the right to do so at any time they see fit. Apple retains the right to “pre-screen, move, refuse, modify and/or remove” any content they deem obj...

Apple finally releases Java patches for Flashback malware

Posted on Apr 05, 2012 by MG1

Apple silently released security patches for Java, addressing 12 separate flaws yesterday after their OS X operating system was found to be vulnerable to the Flashback Trojan. In fact security experts were so worried about the potential for damage from the malware that they recommended ditching Java until it had been plugged.
While those using Microsoft’s Windows OS were at the highest level of risk initially, the Mac Security blog Intego found a new Flashback variant in the wild at the beginning of March, created to specifically target Apple OS X users.
The new update is available from the update manager for OS X 10.6 and 10.7 operating systems and is described by Apple as targeting “multip...

A fresh report has surfaced which suggests the iPhone 5 release date is set for June of this year.
According to a Foxconn recruiter, who is part of the mass recruitment drive at the Chinese firm's factories, the sixth generation of iPhone is expected to arrive in two months time.
The recruiter refers to the next model as the fifth generation of iPhone, which is technically incorrect as the iPhone 4S was the fifth model to roll off the Apple production line.

Consumer Reports hasn’t just reversed its opinion on the new iPad’s heat output, finding the third-gen Apple tablet to best all Android rivals, but has quietly conceded that the recharging issue it initially reported is far less significant than first believed. “Further tests of observations we made that the new iPad was not recharging when playing a demanding, intense video game,” Consumer Reports said, “showed that the problem was limited to times when the device was playing a demanding game with the screen fully bright.”
