Apple announces first Retina display in a MacBook, 220ppi with 2880 x 1800 resolution

Posted on Jun 13, 2012 by MG1

Apple just announced its next-generation MacBook Pro, and it comes equipped with a gorgeous 220 pixel-per-inch 2880 x 1800 display. That's quite a bit shy of the 326 ppi LCD on the iPhone 4S and the 264 ppi density of the new iPad's display, but it's still a massive improvement over the 1680 x 1050 pixels found on Apple's previous-generation clamshell. The new Retina is, as Apple marketing head Phil Shiller not-so-modestly pointed out during this morning's WWDC keynote, the "world's highest-resolution notebook display." It's also soon to be the highest-res LCD in any household, offering three million more pixels than your 1080p HDTV. It's a bit hard to determine just how impressive this next...

Apple Could Discontinue 17-inch MacBook Pro

Apple Could Discontinue 17-inch MacBook Pro

Posted on Apr 25, 2012 by MG3

Market researcher Ming-Chi Kuo, who is credible with reports on Apple's product lineup in the past, predicted that Apple could discontinue the 17-inch variant of its MacBook Pro soon, owing to weak sales. Apple's next MacBook Pro could look increasingly like the MacBook Air, offering high-performance in a very compact form-factor. Being a major design rejig, Apple could take a fresh look at the viability of each variant based on its past market reception. "While adding new products, Apple is likely to stop making the 17” MacBook Pro this year due to falling shipments, in order to maintain a lean product line strategy," Kuo writes in his report.

Apple is reportedly planning to launch a new 15-inch MacBook Air notebook PC in April. The report from Electricpig cites a “premium Mac accessory maker,” who claims a new 15-inch model will feature ports on both sides, with no optical drive or Ethernet port. A 15-inch Air model has been rumored before — DigiTimes previously reported that a 15-inch model was slated to launch in the first quarter of 2012 alongside a new 11-inch and 13-inch model. The Taiwanese publication, however, has also reported that an ultra-thin 15-inch MacBook with Air-like features would launch in the second quarter this year.

Apple seen selling 4.9 million Macs in holiday quarter

Apple seen selling 4.9 million Macs in holiday quarter

Posted on Jan 18, 2012 by MG3

Updated US sales estimates from the NPD Group hint that Apple sold about 4.9 million Macs worldwide during the December quarter, according to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. Data is now in for all three months, showing US sales up 12 percent year-over-year. The 4.9 million figure is, however, a lowered forecast on Munster's part -- 300,000 units below a previous target, even if that would still mean global growth of 18 percent.

U.S. PC Shipments Down 6% in Q4 2011, Apple Up 21%

U.S. PC Shipments Down 6% in Q4 2011, Apple Up 21%

Posted on Jan 12, 2012 by MG15

It appears that PCs are just not the hot gift idea they once were. According to Gartner, U.S. PC shipments were down almost 6% in the fourth quarter of 2011. Apple, however, continues to grow its market share with sales up nearly 21% in the same time. This pushes Apple to the number 3 spot in the U.S. computer market. Still far in the lead are HP and Dell, which have 23% and 22% of the market respectively. Apple’s overall market share is 11%. Lenovo’s sales actually grew by 40%, but it sells so few units in America that it did not figure in the top tier of makers. Apple is the only manufacturer in the top five that grew at all. Apple’s good fortune can be accounted for partially by its retai...

Apple nearly went with AMD for MacBook Air refresh

Apple nearly went with AMD for MacBook Air refresh

Posted on Nov 21, 2011 by MG15

Apple was reportedly close to producing a MacBook Air powered by an AMD Fusion APU. Cupertino even had a working prototype on hand but ultimately canceled the idea last spring, according to SemiAccurate.

Apple was interested in a low power Llano based MacBook Air for the powerful graphics. The system would have lost a little CPU power but the GPU would have been many times faster. But as we know, Apple once again went with an Intel solution – the only question is, why?

As it turns out, AMD wasn’t able to produce enough supply to meet Apple’s high demand. According to multiple sources, SemiAccurate says that even if the deal had panned out, AMD would likely have had to preferentially shift ...

Ultra-thin 15-inch MacBook may launch in Q2 next year

Ultra-thin 15-inch MacBook may launch in Q2 next year

Posted on Nov 15, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: NotebooksApple

Apple may launch an ultra-thin 15-inch MacBook laptop as early as the second quarter of 2012 according to a new report. Components for the new notebook have already begun shipping, DigiTimes reported on Tuesday, though details are extremely limited for the time being. The site’s nameless sources say that components started moving this month in small volumes, perhaps for test runs of the new computer. As was the case when earlier reports emerged regarding the new laptop, it is unclear if this new model will be added to the high end of Apple’s MacBook Air line or if it will simply be a new, thinner MacBook Pro. Mass shipments are currently scheduled to begin in March according to the report, t...

MacBook Air-Like Update to MacBook Pro Line Expected (Again)

MacBook Air-Like Update to MacBook Pro Line Expected (Again)

Posted on Oct 31, 2011 by MG1

It doesn't seem fair that the MacBook Air line has several features over the MacBook Pro (sleek profile; USB ports on both sides; higher-res screen...). A major design refresh to the Pro line, the first in three years, has been bandied about for months now, but according to Japanese site Macotakara, Apple's definitely working on a skinnier Pro.
Inside sources (presumably at a factory) have been cited, claiming the LCD screens used in the new Pros have finished being developed, though there's no word on what sizes they are. Whether we'll be seeing beefier Pro laptops in the same 11 and 13-inch sizes as the Air, or just in the 15 and 17-inch sizes of the Pro, remains to be seen.

Apple MacBook Pro (late 2011) line-up gets processor and graphics boost

Apple MacBook Pro (late 2011) line-up gets processor and graphics boost

Posted on Oct 24, 2011 by MG15

If you meander on down to the Apple store this morning, you'll spot some nice little spec bumps to the MacBook Pro range -- without any increase to the prices. For a start, you can now splash out on a faster AMD Radeon HD 6770M discrete GPU with your 15-inch or 17-inch lappie. Even better, there are some CPU improvements to be had: the 13-incher gets the option of a 2.8GHz Core i7 or a 2.4GHz Core i5 dual-core processor, instead of the previous entry-level 2.3GHz i5 (and it also gets its HDD notched up to a minimum 500GB, or max 750GB). The 15-incher now goes up to a quad-core 2.4GHz i7 -- the same speedy processor that comes in the updated 17-inch variant.
