Adobe: Save 50% if you dump Apple's Final Cut Pro X for our app
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
Earlier this week we pondered out loud whether Adobe – in addition to releasing various video tutorials showing dissatisfied Apple Final Cut Pro X users how easy it was to jump to Premiere Pro – would sweeten the deal with a discount; what we didn’t expect was that discount to amount to a whopping 50-percent. If you’ve bought Final Cut Pro or Avid Media Composer, you can save half on a new copy of Adobe CS5.5 Production Premium or Premiere Pro CS5.5.

Apple pushes OS X Lion GM out to developers
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleMac OS X 10.7
Apple on Friday seeded the Gold Master build of its OS X 10.7 Lion operating system to developers. The build number is 11A511, and the download is available immediately on Apple’s developer site. Barring the discovery of any major issues, the Gold Master code is likely to be unchanged in the release version of Lion, which will launch to the public later this month. Apple announced recently that OS X Lion will be distributed via the Mac App Store rather than using physical media discs, and it will cost just $29.

Samsung To Apple: You Say "Copyist" We Say "Competition"
Like UnlikeFiled in: SamsungApple
The saga continues, but at least this time we get to giggle at the tech giants’ use of sarcasm.
Entangled in a patent battle with Apple, Samsung has switched up its approach to the copycat case, dropping two patents and adding another four. The South Korea-based company is also snarkily redefining the meaning of the word “copying,” opting for the less leechy term, “competing.” According to the freshly filed paperwork, “the Samsung Defendants admit that they have not ceased competing with Apple, notwithstanding Apple’s efforts to avoid such competition.”
The four new patents Apple is supposedly infringing upon include “portable telephone and method of displaying data thereof;” a “portable com...

Apple App Store Hits 100,000 iPad Apps Milestone
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksAppleiPadiPad 2
Apple still dominates the tablet landscape with an ecosystem of apps that has yet to be beat. The App Store has reached a new milestone today, now listing over 100,000 apps designed for the iPad. That’s a huge difference from what competitors, such as Google’s Android tablets, have to offer.
The very first Apple iPad was introduced in April of 2010 with the iPad 2 released in March of this year. Apple did have quite a head start with the first competition-worthy Android tablets having only been released in the beginning of this year, such as the Motorola XOOM. However, the growth is still quite impressive, reaching six figures over the last 16 months in iPad apps alone, not counting iPhone a...

Samsung wants to ban imports of Apple products to the US
Like UnlikeFiled in: SamsungApple
The legal battle between Apple and Samsung is heating up, and after Apple accused the Koreans of “slavishly” copying iDevices, Samsung has replied vigorously by first asking to see the next-gen iPhone and iPad, while now it's asking the US International Trade Commission to ban imports of Apple-made products into the United States.
The claim is made over patents and extends over iPods, iPhones and iPads, which are only designed in the States, but have to be imported from other countries where they are manufactured. "The complaint requests relief in the form of a permanent exclusion order prohibiting entry to the United States of all Apple products in violation of these patents," Samsung menti...

Apple, RIM win big as ITC reverses earlier decision in Kodak patent case
Like UnlikeFiled in: AppleKODAKRIM BlackBerry
The International Trade Commission on Thursday reversed an earlier decision in a patent case that could cost camera maker Kodak hundreds of millions of dollars from Apple and RIM. Kodak had filed suit against both firms, claiming that their mobile devices infringed on multiple patents owned by the Rochester, NY-based company. An initial ruling in favor of Kodak was under ITC review, and the commission on Thursday reversed parts of the decision that had previously been ruled in Kodak’s favor. Other parts of the original ruling were sent to be examined by a judge of administrative law, and a final ruling is scheduled to be made on August 30th.

Mac mini goes on backorder with Amazon UK, Best Buy
Like UnlikeFiled in: Desktop ComputersAppleAmazonMac mini
The Mac mini is once again in short supply, observers point out. At the Best Buy US website the device is now listed as backordered, with a shipping time of one to two weeks, although pick-up should be possible at some stores. Amazon UK is also listing the computer as backordered, though with a specific resupply date of July 5th.
The shortages support the notion that updated Mac minis may be imminent. As new hardware approaches, Apple tends to slow and then cease production of the previous generation. The widespread expectation for the Mini, however, is a late July or early August launch date.
Apple could be holding off on a refresh in order to preload systems with Mac OS X Lion. In any case...

Apple iPhone 3GS to be free on contract following iPhone 5 launch, analyst says
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 3GSiPhone 4s
Apple is set to finally hit the $0 on-contract mark with its entry-level iPhone 3GS once it launches the next-generation iPhone 5 later this year. In a note to investors on Wednesday, RBC Capital Markets General Manager Mike Abramsky claims Apple is expected to finally offer the phone for free in an effort to aggressively attack mid-market smartphone buyers and counter Android’s momentum. Abramsky sees this move more than doubling Apple’s global addressable market to 150 million smartphones, up from 64 million, and it will drastically accelerate Apple’s growth outside North America. In the U.S., this of course begs the question, how will Verizon Wireless stay competitive with AT&T? Apple doe...

Samsung Files ITC Complaint Against Apple for iPhone, iPad
Like UnlikeFiled in: SamsungApple
News of the Samsung and Apple legal battle seems to be making weekly headlines. It started when Apple accused Samsung of “slavishly copying” its mobile designs (i.e. iPhone, iPad) and having no innovative products of its own. Samsung fired back by suing Apple for wireless patent infringements. Last week, we learned that Apple sued Samsung in its home base, South Korea, for several patent infringements. This time around, Samsung is filing a complaint with the International Trade Commission to place an injunction on the import of iPhone and iPad devices into the U.S.

Refreshed MacBook Air line could land July 19th with Sandy Bridge, OS X Lion, Thunderbolt

Apple will refresh its MacBook Air line of computers on July 19th, iClarified reported on Wednesday. We began to suspect the update was imminent when early reports suggested that global supplies for the computer were in short supply in late May. Those reports were solidified earlier this week when stock of the MacBook Air at Best Buy and Amazon was depleted. The device is expected to pack the new Thunderbolt I/O port in place of DisplayPort, Intel’s new Sandy Bridge processors, and the brand new OS X Lion operating system. 9to5 Mac said that Apple will likely offer Intel’s 1.8GHz Intel Core i7, 1.7GHz Core i7, and the 1.7GHz Core i5 in its new machines. Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleiOS 5
Apple iOS 5 is slowly but surely coming together as beta 2, which was released to developers recently, includes Wi-Fi sync and the framework for over-the-air (OTA) updates. These features were announced during Apple’s iOS 5 presentation at WWDC 2011, and it is really a nice overhaul of the operating system. Notifications have been improved and are less intrusive, iCloud services and compatibility will be free to iOS 5 users and many more tweaks and upgrades.
MacRumors says that Wi-Fi syncing, which allows users to sync their iOS content with iTunes over a Wi-Fi network, appears to be enabled in the latest beta version of the iPhone platform. In order to activate Wi-Fi syncing capabilities, u...

Apple Now Number One Mobile Brand In Australia
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
The Apple brand continues to surge when it comes to mobile devices despite the growing competition. According to a new report from IDC, the first quarter 2011 results show that Apple has become the number one mobile brand in Australia for the very first time. The market there has mainly been dominated by Nokia, but this year the Symbian platform has seen a huge tumble along with a dip in demand for feature phones.
Apple comes in first place in Australia’s smartphone market with 40% market share after an almost 10% increase quarter over quarter. Android comes in second place with nearly 30% of the market while Nokia has plunged to third place with 22% of the market.

Acer lowering notebook shipments too as iPad bites deeper
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksAcerAppleiPad
Acer's significantly lowered estimates include full-size notebooks as well, part suppliers divulged Monday night. The PC builder is now planning to drop its total notebook shipments from 6.4 million to 5.4 million. About 80 percent of the drop slipped out to Digitimes is the original netbook plan, but 20 percent will come from regular portables.
Shipments should hit nearly 1.5 million in July and climb to as many as two million notebooks in August with a similar amount in September. The move should be enough to purge Acer's excess stock.
The shortfall is partly attributable to the "abnormalities" the company reported earlier, where unsold stock in Europe is being cleared out at a discount. ...

Apple breaking up with Samsung as components supplier, embracing the TSMC foundries
Like UnlikeFiled in: SamsungApple
Numerous industry sources point to Apple trying to get away from what is turning out to be its biggest competitor instead of a mere components supplier, Samsung.
The move seems to be already underway, with the Taiwanese TSMC foundries picking up the slack, and likely to receive the orders for the A6 chipset next year, when Apple is expected to break up with Samsung completely.
The Koreans were still making the A5 chipset in the iPad 2, the flash memory bits, as well as other components for Apple, before the legal battle between the two companies began, but Cupertino is looking for alternative shops on all of these, and we bet it can't wait for the contracts to end.
TSMC is a contract fab, w...

Apple files another lawsuit against Samsung
Like UnlikeFiled in: SamsungApple
Apple has fired-off another lawsuit against Samsung, once again claiming the manufacturer copied the iPhone and iPad designs for its own products.
In the latest round of the tit-for-tat legal battle, Apple has taken the fight to Samsung's home turf by filing suit at the Seoul District Court in South Korea.
The writ reiterates that it is "no coincidence that Samsung's latest products look a lot like the iPhone and iPad, from the shape of the hardware to the user interface and even the packaging.
"This kind of blatant copying is wrong, and we need to protect Apple's intellectual property when companies steal our ideas," it read.

The disagreement focuses on Samsung's range of Gal...
