Apple may launch 3G iPod touch in September, rumor claims
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
A Dutch Apple blog named AppleSpot reported on Friday that Apple will launch a new 3G iPod touch in September. Similar to options available for the iPad Wi-Fi + 3G, users would have the option of purchasing the 3G iPod touch directly from a wireless carrier with a data plan. We’re expecting a possible iPod/iPhone/iPad refresh in September, and so it’s entirely possible that Apple is considering creating a version with a 3G radio. Such a device could also help carriers lock in more data plans and would continue to boost Apple’s presence among the flood of new Android handsets. Our only gripe with the whole story is that AppleSpot doesn’t have a proven track record reporting on Apple rumors. P...

Apple Store planning overnight shift on July 13th, refreshed MacBook Air, Lion release possible
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
Apple has started to ask Apple Store employees to prepare for an “overnight” shift on July 13th — a sign that the company is prepping a new release of some sort on the next day, 9to5 Mac said. Apple has already confirmed that Mac OS X Lion 10.7 will land in July, and we’re placing bets that’s what we’ll see on the 14th. However, we’re also expecting refreshed MacBook Air notebooks in the imminent future and, since the new MacBook Air will no doubt run OS X Lion, we wouldn’t be surprised to see it launch at the same time. Other specs for the refresh likely include Intel’s new SandyBridge processors and Thunderbolt I/O in place of the DisplayPort. There have even been rumors of a black anodize...

iOS 5 Beta Reportedly Sets One Developer’s iPhone Cable Ablaze
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleiOS 5
Oh, the many woes of being an early adopter in the Beta software world. The software might crash, causing you to lose all your work! It may have gaping security issues, leaving an entry way for malicious misdoers! It may start your stuff on fire! Wait, what?
According to developer Gus Pinto (who sum ups his life in under 140 characters as “Pioneering Mac Desktop Virtualization. iOS, Mac & Android Development”), that last bit is exactly what happened to his iPhone 4 running a Developer Beta build of iOS 5.
Early this morning, Gus tweeted out “My charging cable caught on fire while charging my iPhone 4 running iOS5. #fail”, providing the above shot to back up his claim.

Apple Patent Filing Reveals Plans For Transparent Augmented Reality iPad Display Technology
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
A couple of patent applications surfaced today, revealing that Apple is considering some interesting new features for its future iOS devices. Just this morning, a filing indicating an iPhone and iPad stylus could be in the near future. And now, two other patent applications reveal that Apple also has some augmented reality plans for its iPad displays.
One of the patent filings, discovered by Apple Insider, was published for the first time today by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The documents illustrate an augmented reality interface for the iPad that involves a split screen where the one above shows a live video while the one below shows a computer-generated or augmented vers...

Apple patents show stylus with heated tip, data sending
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
Two new patent applications filed by Apple with the US Patent and Trademark Office reveal the company is planning to release styluses to work with its iOS devices. The Stylus for Touch Sensitive Devices filing describes a stylus with a conductive tip that can be heated for a better connection with capacitive sensors in iPhones or iPads. It would also sport a rechargeable battery that can be docked into an iOS device for recharging.
The heating would make up for any aging of the stylus and the resulting loss in signal strength. Apple engineer Douglas Weber said there are three possible ways of heating the tip, including with a battery-powered element, a heat sink that would transfer the heat ...

Apple Store Spy Cam Artist Under Investigation By Secret Service
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
A recent video posted by digital artist Kyle McDonald has garnered a lot of attention that could be getting the artist into some serious trouble. The artistic project is called People Staring At Computers, which McDonald compiled by installing spy cam software on various display Macs in two New York Apple Store locations. To watch the video, continue after the cut.
McDonald installed spy cam software on Apple Store Macs to take periodic photos of customers staring at the monitors. Thousands of photos of people staring blankly and looking generally bored were then compiled with music and an artistic message. The project may have meant well as some sort of study on the current human state of b...

Judge shoots down Apple's 'App store' suit against Amazon
Like UnlikeFiled in: AppleAmazon
A U.S. judge has shot down Apple’s request that Amazon stop using the word “Appstore” to describe its mobile application marketplace. Apple originally filed a lawsuit against Amazon in March of this year arguing that Amazon’s “Appstore” infringed on Apple’s “App Store” trademark. Amazon immediately responded calling the claims “baseless,” and now the court has taken its side. “The evidence does show that Apple has spent a great deal of money on advertising and publicity, and has sold/provided/furnished a large number of apps from its App Store,” Judge Phyllis Hamilton, said. “However, there is also evidence that the term ‘app store’ is used by other companies as a descriptive term for a plac...

Apple Loses Preliminary Injunction In Amazon "App Store" Scuffle
Like UnlikeFiled in: AppleAmazon
Judge Phyllis Hamilton, who is presiding over the Amazon-Apple “app store” war, certainly meant it when she said she would “probably” reject Apple’s request for a preliminary injunction. And that’s exactly what she did. Hamilton earlier referred to Apple’s proof as a “stumbling block” in its case against Amazon, noting that there isn’t much “evidence of confusion” between the two stores. In an 18-page order, Hamilton explains that Apple has not proven that its App Store is “prominent” and “renowned,” which I guess it has to be in order achieve the status necessary for shutting down Amazon’s Appstore for Android.
The judge also remarked that the term “app store” is used by other companies as ...

Apple acknowledges PDF vulnerability in iOS, promises fix
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
It was announced yesterday that a German IT agency discovered a serious security vulnerability in Apple's iOS platform. The security hole will allow a malicious user access to the root files of the phone, where they could see personal user information like passwords, call logs, messages, and more. Apple has acknowledged the problem and promises to issue a fix.
Speaking to the Associated Press, Apple spokesperson Bethan Lloyd said Apple is "aware of this reported issue and developing a fix that will be available to customers in an upcoming software update." She did not provide a date as to when the fix would be available.
The vulnerability is found in all devices that are running iOS 4.3.3, i...

iPhone 6 rumored to support an alternative charging method
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
Apple's 5th generation of the iPhone has yet to hit the market, but rumors about its successor are already circulating the web. However, the speculations that we are dealing with today have nothing to do with the device's display size, camera type, storage capacity, or anything else that is on the list of iPhone 5 rumors that we have come across so far.
Some of you have probably heard about inductive charging – a cool way to bring your handset's battery back to life wirelessly. The technology may still have a few obstacles to tackle before it is ready to hit the mainstream, but there is a chance that the iPhone 6, or whatever it will be named, will be able to take advantage of it. We have to...

Second hacker indicted in AT&T iPad hacking
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksAppleAT&TiPad
The second of two hackers arrested over stealing iPad data this year has been formally charged in a Newark court. Andrew Auernheimer was accused of identity theft and conspiracy to get unauthorized access to a computer. Along with Daniel Spitler, who recently pleaded guilty, Auenhimer is alleged to have obtained the personal e-mail addresses and other info for about 120,000 iPad 3G users on AT&T in June of last year.
The indictment for Auernheimer has e-mail evidence of himself and Spitler aiming to get shock value out of the attack, which the two launched under the group name Goatse Security. Spitler told Auernheimer that he hoped to get at least one reporter's e-mail address to guarantee m...

Apple iPad 2 Plus coming this Fall with Retina Display?
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksAppleiPad 2
The rumors of the iPad 3 coming out this Fall have been bouncing around for a while now but an analyst is lending a bit more credence to the fact that we may see a followup to the Apple tablet soon and it may have a boosted screen.
“We hear Apple could migrate the iPad’s display resolution from a current pixel density of 132 (pixels per inch) to 250-300 ppi for the ‘iPad 2 Plus’ (note that the iPhone 4‘s screen is 326 ppi),” analyst Craig Berger wrote, according to AppleInsider.
According to this analyst, the iPad 2 Plus would have the major screen improvement, may include a storage bump but will have similar innards to the existing iPad 2. This way, Apple could bill this as an expansion of ...

Apple iPhone 5 be thinner, lighter than current model according to WSJ
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 4s
The Wall Street Journal is singing a new tune Wednesday morning, reaffirming parts of an earlier BGR report suggesting that Apple is preparing to release a redesigned iPhone 5 later this year. Citing anonymous sources in Apple’s supply chain, the paper reports this morning that Apple has placed component orders with key suppliers for fifth-generation iPhone parts. As has already been widely reported, Apple’s next iPhone is said to feature an 8-megapixel camera and Qualcomm radios. The report veers away from the consensus in suggesting that Apple’s next iPhone will not share its design with the current iPhone 4, however, and will instead be thinner and lighter than the current model. Apple Responds to Samsung's ITC Complaint In Kind
Like UnlikeFiled in: SamsungApple
Apple filed a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission on July 5 seeking to block the import of certain devices made by Samsung that Apple feels violate its designs and patents. Samsung filed a similar complaint with the ITC last week, seeking to prevent Apple from importing the iPhone and iPad into the U.S. The ITC complaints are the lastest part of an on-going patent battle between the two companies that started when Apple filed a lawsuit against Samsung in April, alleging that Samsung has brazenly copied Apple's products for financial gain. If the ITC agrees to investigate the complaints, a hearing likely won't be scheduled for more than a year.
