Apple confirms iCloud Web Interface
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
A week ago a report raised the question if the iCloud will roll-out without web facing interfaces. Apple did not announce or demo web interfaces for the iCloud, but I already argued back then that this is no reason that they would not be there.
Today TechCrunch spotted a FAQ about the transition for mobileMe users to the iCloud. In this FAQ Apple answers directly this question
Will I be able to access iCloud services on the web?
Yes. Web access to iCloud Mail, Contacts, Calendar, and Find My iPhone will be available at icloud.com this fall.
So there you have it. Of course the iCloud has web front ends. If you happen to be a mobileMe user you will be happy to find out that you can keep your ...

Skype coming to iPad soon
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksAppleiPad 2
The second we knew that there would be a front-facing camera on the iPad 2, we all knew that Skype would get there eventually. Skype for the iPad isn't out just yet, and it doesn't have a set release date, but it looks as though it will be coming out very soon.
First, there was a video leaked previewing Skype for the iPad (below), then a Skype executive confirmed the imminent release when questioned by The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW). Rick Osterioh, Skype Vice President of Consumer and Product Design, told TUAW that Skype for the iPad is awaiting approval to the app store right now.
Skype for the iPad will be largely what we would expect, though there will be a few features that aren't ...

Apple releases iOS 5 beta 2
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleiOS 5
You heard that right. Apple’s just unleashed iOS 5 beta 2 for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch units — for developers only, of course. We’re in the processing of upgrading, and we’ll let you know what we find. You guys do the same, alright?
With iTunes 10.5 beta 2, and iOS 5 beta 2, wireless iTunes sync now works.
Notifications on the lockscreen are redone — they’re much, much bigger for a single alert, then shows in list view for multiple alerts.
iMessage only works with iOS beta 2 both ways, but it’s super fast now. We’re guessing Apple changed the servers they used for this.
Thanks, Doug!

iOS 5 Legal Disclaimer Section Includes Mapping Companies That Are Not Google!
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleiOS 5
Even though Apple has let Google answer life’s navigational questions for us thus far, it doesn’t mean that Apple wants one of its biggest competitors cashing in on the iPhone and iPad forever.
Speculation surrounding Google Maps getting replaced in iOS has been around for years. In 2009, Apple bought a couple mapping companies. In mid-2010, the iPhone maker scrapped Google and Skyhook‘s location databases in favor of its own, and a couple months later started hiring iOS engineers with mapping experience. That’s more than enough to keep the rumor mill spinning, but things got a bit juicier today. The legal disclaimer section of the iOS 5 included references to a number of different mapping c...

26-year old pleads guilty to hacking AT&T iPad data
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksAppleAT&TiPad
Last year hackers made headlines when AT&T announced to a security breach that had allowed hackers to access the personal data from 114,000 iPad 3G users. On Thursday, 26-year old Daniel Spitler from San Francisco pleaded guilty to two crimes: conspiracy to gain unauthorized access to computers and identity theft. Spitler faces up to 10 years in prison — five years for each count, according to The Wall Street Journal. “Computer hackers are exacting an increasing toll on our society, damaging individuals and organizations to gain notoriety for themselves,” said U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman in New Jersey. “Daniel Spitler’s guilty plea is a timely reminder of the consequences of treating criminal...

China Mobile worker outs iPhone 5, due in September
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 4s
A China Mobile employee allegedly revealed that the popular Chinese carrier will launch Apple’s fifth-generation iPhone this coming September, Ticonderoga Securities analyst Brian White wrote in a note to investors on Thursday. The news jibes with multiple earlier reports that Apple’s iPhone 5 is set to launch this September, though it may launch even sooner in the U.S. and other key markets. The news was first relayed by Chinese language website Bianews.com, which reported on Thursday that a China Mobile employee wrote that the carrier would launch the iPhone 5 in September in a post on Weibo.com, a micro-blogging service similar to Twitter. The post was subsequently deleted. Apple COO Tim ...

Apple is awarded a potentially industry-altering patent on touchscreens
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
Apple filed for this touchscreen patent back in 2007. But now that it has finally been awarded, it could have sweeping effects on the wireless landscape in the U.S. The patent covers nearly every industry-standard feature of the capacitive interface, which would affect every device maker.
The patent states, most generally, that it covers "a computer-implemented method, for use in conjunction with a portable multifunction device with a touch screen display, [that] comprises displaying a portion of page content, including a frame displaying a portion of frame content and also including other content of the page, on the touch screen display."
The patent also extends to multi-touch gestures like...

T-Mobile USA now home to over 1 million iPhones
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 4
T-Mobile USA has gone on record in stating that its network is now home to more than 1 million unlocked Apple iPhones. While the figure is not incredibly surprising considering the massive popularity of Apple’s smartphone line, it certainly reaffirms the fact that T-Mobile subscribers are itching for an iOS option. Though the overwhelming bulk of iPhones being used on T-Mobile’s network are 3G and 3GS models, unnamed T-Mobile spokespeople also confirmed that the carrier has micro-SIMs in development. For the time being, iPhone 4 owners who want to use their devices on T-Mobile’s network have to perform a bit of surgery on their T-Mobile SIM cards.

If iPhone gets NFC, Google ports Wallet
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleGoogleiPhone 4
Google Wallet seems like a significant step forward towards NFC adoption, but until now, the service was expected to work only on devices running Android – the Google-backed mobile OS. However, it must have been clear to the Mountain View-based company that without Wallet being accessible on as many handsets on the market as possible, it would have a bumpy road ahead of it.

iPhone 5 rumored packing dual LED camera flash
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 4s
Apple's commitment to the iPhone as a camera phone might have grown as a rumor late Wednesday said it might jump to a dual LED flash. Edison Opto, Everlight Electronics, and Lite-On have all been raised as possible candidates. Both Edison and Lite-On have been stepping up their shipments of LED flashes to major phone designers, Digitimes heard, making them ideal candidates.

Judge denies Samsung access to unreleased iPad, iPhone
Like UnlikeFiled in: SamsungApple
According to FOSS Patents, a judge in the U.S. District Court in the Northern District of California has ruled that Samsung cannot view Apple’s next-generation iPad and iPhone products. The whole debacle started when Apple began accusing Samsung of creating copycat products — as such, it asked the Korean firm to produce its next-generation devices inside a court room. The court took Apple’s side and Samsung was forced to show Apple the Galaxy S II, Galaxy Tab 8.9, Galaxy Tab 10.1, Infuse 4G, and DROID Charge. In an effort to prepare for further legal battles with Apple, Samsung wanted the same access to Apple’s next generation products. For now, that won’t happen. The reasoning behind the ju...

Apple iPhone 5 coming in September, latest report says
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 4s
The Apple iPhone rumors go into overdrive this year because Steve Jobs didn’t introduce the 2011 model at WWDC and Bloomberg is reporting that the next iPhone (iPhone 5? iPhone 4GS?) will land in September, just in time for the back-to-school season.
The report says that the iPhone 5 will sport the new dual-core processor that can be found in the iPad 2 and it should also have a boosted camera. I’d expect it to be bumped up to 8 megapixels but find that the 5-megapixel camera in the current version is very, very good.
The report also says that the next iPhone will look similar to the latest one on the market, which is a direct dispute of another recent rumor which says that this version will...

iPhone 4 becomes the most popular camera on Flickr
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 4
The iPhone 4 has just become the most popular camera on Flickr beating the Nikon D90 who long held the crown and made us wonder about all the possible reasons behind it. A look at Flickr's stats shows that its professional and semi-professional DSLRs that occupy the rankings as the Canon EOS 5D Mark II comes third, followed by the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi and the Canon EOS Rebel T1i. One thing is evident – the iPhone 4 has a far inferior camera than all of them.

Adobe AIR 2.7 brings improved speed to iOS, cordial installation to Android
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleGoogleAndroidiOS 5
Adobe AIR 2.7 may be a sad joke for Linux users, but it's likely to be a true zinger for the mobile crowd. Take iOS, where the runtime now delivers noticeably faster performance, along with render speeds that are up to four times faster in CPU mode -- quite a punchline, if you ask us. For those on the Android side of the fence, you now have the option to install AIR to your device's SD card (and thus, make room for less considerate applications). Sadly, there's no monumental leaps in speed for Google's users, but you're getting used to this, right? For a quick peek of what the Apple constituency can expect, you'll find a video after the break with two iPads -- one running 2.6, the other feat...
