Judge finds HTC guilty of infringing two Apple patents; could mean trouble for Android [updated]

A judge with the U.S. International Trade Commission on Friday ruled that HTC’s Android phones infringe on two of ten Apple patents covered in a complaint filed by the Cupertino-based company last year. “We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it. We’ve decided to do something about it,” Apple CEO Steve Jobs said in a statement at that time. “We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours.” The ITC’s decision is an initial determination however, and it will now need to be reviewed by a six-member Commission. Apple’s complaint in this case covered a total of ten patents, and t...

Apple TV to score Bluetooth support with iOS 5, make search slightly less painful?

Apple TV to score Bluetooth support with iOS 5, make search slightly less painful?

Posted on Jul 14, 2011 by MG1

Did you know that your second-gen Apple TV has a Bluetooth radio hidden inside it? Well it does but, until now, the only way to access it was with a little jailbreaking and some command line chops. That could all be changing though, with the release of iOS 5 this fall. 9to5Mac pulled some interesting code from the latest developer beta of iOS indicating that support for Bluetooth keyboards is coming to the Apple TV and, potentially, the ability pair other devices as well. In addition to making search without the iPhone remote app far less painful, a keyboard is an essential part of bringing apps to the tiny media box -- something that has been rumored would happen for quite sometime. It's po...

Foxconn to build all iPad units this year

Foxconn to build all iPad units this year

Posted on Jul 14, 2011 by MG1

Foxconn will be the only manufacturer to build the iPad this year, DigiTimes reported on Wednesday. There were reports earlier this week that suggested Apple had been in talks with either Pegatron or Quanta Computer as a second manufacturer in order to create enough units for the launch of a new model in September. However, Foxconn reportedly caught word of Apple’s discussions with other manufacturing outlets and was able to convince the Cupertino-based company to stick with one manufacturer… for now. Apple is expected to launch a new iPad with a higher resolution screen in September. According to rumors swirling around analyst circles and in the media, the new tablet will be dubbed the “iPa...

MacBook Air refresh to bring keyboard backlighting back?

Posted on Jul 14, 2011 by MG1

Apple's next generation of MacBook Airs could be bringing the backlighting back, if a new report is to be believed.
The first generation of Airs rocked a backlit keyboard, but the handy typing-in-the-dark feature was done away with in the most recent iterations.
As well as keyboard back-lighting, Apple Insider's sources posit that the new 11.6- and 13.3-inch MacBook Airs are rumoured to come with Thunderbolt ports for high-speed file transfer, and possibly high speed 400MBps flash memory.
The Mac that roared
The new line is set to debut during the week commencing 21 July, according to the same sources, and are set to ship with the final build of Mac OS X Lion, which was unveiled at WWDC in ....

HTC has officially commented on yesterday’s news that Apple has added a fresh batch of patent infringement allegations to the ongoing legal action between the two companies, telling SlashGear that it “vehemently denies” all of Apple’s claims. “HTC is dismayed” the company’s general counsel, Grace Lei says, “that Apple has resorted to competition in the courts rather than the market place.” As expected, the second set of claims detail HTC’s more recent devices, including the EVO 4G and HTC Flyer tablet.
Patent law specialist Florian Mueller has dug out the full list of devices Apple has cited, and it’s basically a summary of the models HTC has released to the market prior to the fresh range a...

Purchases from Apple's App Store are expected to grow 61 percent this year as more and more consumers look for a rewarding app store experience when buying a new device, according to a Monday report.
The average iOS device user will download 83 apps in 2011, up 61 percent from 51 in 2010, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster wrote in a note to investors.
"We believe this trend points to the increasing importance of an app store with a broad selection of tested apps to drive device sales," Munster wrote. "Smartphone users are showing an increasing appetite to use apps to add features to their phones, and iOS has the leading app ecosystem."

Apple looks to block sale of HTC devices with new patent complaint

Apple looks to block sale of HTC devices with new patent complaint

Posted on Jul 12, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: AppleHTC

Apple on Monday filed a new patent complaint with the International Trade Commission looking to block the sale of several HTC devices it claims infringe on Apple patents, Bloomberg reports. Apple recently filed a similar complaint with the ITC looking to block the sale of several Samsung smartphones and tablets that Apple feels copy the iPhone and iPad. The move was the latest in an ongoing legal battle between Samsung and Apple surrounding multiple patent disputes. Apple’s patent disputes with HTC date back even further, however — Apple first filed a patent complaint against against the Taiwan-based smartphone maker early in 2010. HTC responded by denying claims that it was infringing on Ap...

Jailbreakme registers over 2 million jailbreak attempts in mere four days after launch

Jailbreakme registers over 2 million jailbreak attempts in mere four days after launch

Posted on Jul 12, 2011 by MG1

It was just a couple of days ago when Jailbreakme released its latest 3.0 version supporting iOS devices like the iPad 2 and others running 4.3.x, but it's already got significant traction having registered over 2 million taps on the jailbreak button, according to a tweet by one of the main contributors to the service, Grant Paul. That translates into the impressive more than 500,000 a day.
Jailbreakme's popularity stems from the fact that the tool is the first to support untethered jailbreak for the iPad 2, but it's also easiest and probably the most secure one out there. It uses a yet unpatched hole in Mobile Safari, so the user can load Cydia and set their device free, but Apple engineer...

iPad 2 Shipping Times Drop To 3-5 Days

iPad 2 Shipping Times Drop To 3-5 Days

Posted on Jul 11, 2011 by MG1

When Apple’s iPad 2 first came out back in March, there were massive supply shortages. The bottleneck was rumored to be light leakage issues with the LG supplied display panels, but whatever the problem was, it looks to be fixed. Apple plans to boost shipment numbers for Q3 and has just shortened iPad 2 shipping times to 3-5 days.
During the first month of the iPad 2 launch, shipping times were set to 4-5 weeks out. The iPad 2 continued to sell out in other countries with a worldwide shortage that resulted in disappointing shipment numbers for Apple during its Q1 earnings report. That was soon improved by April and has since remained at 1-2 weeks out. Today, the online Apple Store started sh...

Artist Gets Secret Service Visit Over Apple Store Webcam Spying

Posted on Jul 11, 2011 by MG1

A Brooklyn-based artist has caught the attention of the Secret Service after installing software on Apple Store computers that takes Webcam photos every two minutes, and posting those images on the Internet.
The "@secretservice just stopped by to investigate ... and took my laptop. please assume they're reading any emails you send me," Kyle McDonald tweeted on Thursday.
McDonald took the photos and posted them on a Tumblr blog called "People Staring at Computers." He told Mashable that he got permission from Apple security guards to take photos in the store, but it's unclear if they were aware that McDonald also meant installing software and snapping Webcam shots. Given that it attracted Sec...

Apple loses ‘app store’ exclusivity to Amazon: Does it matter?

Apple loses ‘app store’ exclusivity to Amazon: Does it matter?

Posted on Jul 11, 2011 by MG1

Apple’s injunction request against Amazon to axe the company’s use of the term ‘app store’ has been denied. The Amazon Appstore for Android lives on, ready and willing to offer free daily apps at will. As the dust begins to settle following the ruling by the US federal judge, how will this impact Apple and more importantly: does it matter?
Apple has rightfully pioneered the modern application library through its App Store. With more than 300,000 apps available and an endless slue of developers chomping at the bit for a chance to strike gold, apps and Apple have almost become synonymous. As I’ve followed the mobile industry for the past five years, today’s ruling by Judge Phyllis Hamilton is ...

Cheap iPhone 5 gets new Rumor Fuel

Cheap iPhone 5 gets new Rumor Fuel

Posted on Jul 11, 2011 by MG1

The rumor about Apple releasing a new cheap iPhone to battle Android on the low-end is not dying. There was quite some intensity to the budget iPhone rumor end of June when an analyst laid out the possibility of a $350 pre-paid iPhone. Now 9to5Mac reports that a reliable source told them that Apple is indeed releasing two iPhone models this Fall. One completely new high-end device with new design and a visually distinct bargain iPhone.
9to5Mac thinks that Apple will use the current iPod touch platform to build a low-cost iPhone. My colleague Robert already argued against Apple diluting the iPhone with a cheaper model here. I share his concerns, but Apple is already selling a cheap iPhone. It...

Apple preparing new wireless sharing feature that will compete with webOS 'Touch-to-share'

Apple preparing new wireless sharing feature that will compete with webOS 'Touch-to-share'

Posted on Jul 11, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Apple

Apple has been testing a new wireless sharing feature that could allow users to quickly and easily transfer files from various iOS devices, PatentlyApple has discovered. The technology will no doubt compete with HP’s webOS “Touch-to-share” feature, which lets the Palm Pre3 and the TouchPad share files with one another. Though there is no indication as to when Apple might implement the tech, Apple’s patents outline a technology that appears to one-up HP’s offering. The patent describes the sharing experience as including both visual and audio aspects. As PatentlyApple points out, imagine an iPad “sucking” the files from your iPhone with a vacuum noise, and seeing the files leave the iPhone an...
