Apple plans overnights for Tuesday in preparation of OS X Lion launch
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleMac OS X 10.7
Apple has reportedly scheduled overnights for Tuesday night in preparation for the OS X Lion launch. According to 9to5 Mac, Apple Store outlets are already equipped with hard drives to quickly install Lion on the show floor computers, and the stores have been sent new posters to outfit the walls with advertisements for the new operating system. Apple is also expected to refresh the MacBook Air in the imminent future. We’re expecting the new notebooks to pack the Thunderbolt I/O port in place of DisplayPort, Intel’s new Sandy Bridge processors, and a backlit keyboard.

Apple board directors discussing options for Steve Jobs successor
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
Apple’s board of directors has been in informal talks with executive recruiting firms and has been discussing a successor to CEO Steve Jobs, The Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday. Reportedly, the board has also met and talked with “at least one” head of a “high-profile tech company” as a possible successor, although it’s unclear who that person is. The Wall Street Journal also noted that it wasn’t immediately clear if Steve Jobs had been aware of the search or if Apple has been looking behind his back, though he emailed The Wall Street Journal in response to their questions about the discussions: “I think it’s hogwash.” Steve Jobs has been on medical leave from the Cupertino-based firm...

Eric Schmidt: Apple is suing us instead of innovating, will make sure HTC doesn't lose patent suit
Like UnlikeFiled in: AppleHTC
During Google’s Mobile Revolution conference in Tokyo, Google’s executive chairman Eric Schmidt reaffirmed his company’s support of HTC and its other Android partners, ZDNET Asia reported on Tuesday. HTC is currently in the middle of multiple patent battles with Apple, and the U.S. International Trade Commission ruled on Friday that the Taiwanese firm was in violation of two of Apple’s patents. When asked whether Google would help HTC pay any fees associated with a guilty ruling, should the company’s appeal be shot down, Schmidt replied “We will make sure they don’t lose, then.” Schmidt attributed the lawsuits to Android’s massive global growth and restated that there are now more than 550,0...

Apple reportedly testing high-res screens for iPad 3
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksAppleiPad 3
Well, here we go again. Another report out of the Korean Times suggests that Apple is currently testing a high-resolution 9.7-inch display that will bring a Retina Display of sorts to the next iPad.
The report said:
“Apple’s upcoming iPad 3 will feature an improved display to support quad extended graphics (QXGA), a display resolution of 2048×1536 pixels with a 4:3 aspect ratio to provide full high definition (HD) viewing experience,” said a source close to the talks.
I think it’s pretty clear that the next iPad will have a higher-resolution display but the real question is when can we expect the next iPad to hit. If we go by Apple’s patterns over the last few years, the next-generation tabl...

HTC to appeal ITC ruling in Apple patent case
Like UnlikeFiled in: AppleHTC
HTC will appeal the U.S. International Trade Commission’s ruling that it is infringing on two of Apple’s patents. “Now the course of action is to appeal, we believe we have a very strong case, the attorney agrees with us, and therefore we will appeal,” HTC’s chief financial officer Winston Yung told The Wall Street Journal on Monday. On Friday, a U.S. ITC judge said that HTC was guilty of infringing on two of Apple’s patents that cover a “system and method for performing an action on a structure in computer-generated data,” and a “real-time signal processing system for serially transmitted data.” Apple originally filed the complaint last year, and HTC has filed its own lawsuit against Apple ...

48% of smartphone buyers want iPhone next, survey says
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 4
According to results from a new ChangeWave survey released on Monday, 48% of those looking to buy a new smartphone during the next 90 days plan on buying an iPhone. In addition, 46% of those buying a smartphone in the next 90 days said that they would prefer an iOS-powered device, 32% want a smartphone running Android, and just 4% want a BlackBerry OS device. Apple’s iOS users are the most satisfied with their operating system, too. 70% of those surveyed said that they were “very satisfied” with iOS. 50% said they were very satisfied with Android, 27% were happy with Microsoft’s Windows OS (which we assume means both Windows Mobile and Windows Phone), and 26% were pleased with RIM’s BlackBer...

Apple to Sell Contract-Free iPhone for $350?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 3GS
Apple is reportedly launching a contract-free iPhone this year for the low price of $350. Typically, an out-of-contract iPhone model fetches anywhere between $600-700, so this is a pretty big deal for those who want the Apple smartphone without the burden of signing a contract. Last month, Apple decided to start selling the iPhone 4 contract-free in the U.S., so it’s nice to see a less expensive option possibly on the horizon.
According to BGR, an off-contract or prepaid iPhone might be the iPhone 3GS. If there is plenty of stock left over, this makes sense, although users will be limited to only 8GB of storage space if we’re talking about the current 3GS model being sold by AT&T.

Amazon UK Drops Apple Pricing Across The Board
Like UnlikeFiled in: AppleAmazon
Apple has a lot of rumored revamps coming up, including new MacBook Airs, new Apple TVs, and even new LED Cinema Displays. This could mean a lot of the older models will start to be discounted, which could be partly why Amazon UK has just dropped pricing across the board for almost all of their Apple products.
As of this writing, a search for Apple products on Amazon UK reveals many Apple products with prices cut back, even if only by a few British pounds. Considering the exchange rate, however, that translates to quite a bit more in savings when it comes to US dollars.

Apple Changes Up Overseas App Store Pricing
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
A dollar isn't what it used to be—and even electronics juggernaut Apple knows it. This week the company made some fairly significant changes to its international App Store pricing, CNET reports.
The new scheme will mean cheaper albums in Japan, Switzerland, and Australia, and pricier tracks in the UK, Norway, and Mexico. The price adjustments reflect changes in foreign exchange rates and local tax laws in countries, an Apple spokesperson told CNET. The spokesperson said that the changes only apply to Apple's App Store and Mac App Store—not the company's hardware.
MacRumors charted out the price changes in the six countries (below), and increases include:
Mexico: $10 to $12
Norway: 6.00Kr to ...

Apple to ditch Samsung for iPad 3 chip?
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksSamsungAppleiPad 3
With all the legal wrangles going on between Apple and Samsung (you show me yours and I'll show you mine) it's easy to forget that the two tech giants are BFFs when it comes to chip production - Samsung manufactured the A4 chip that sits in your iPhone 4 and the A5 that's housed in your iPad 2.
Or at least they were - a report by Reuters suggests that Apple may be looking elsewhere when it comes to the production of its next-gen SoC, the A6.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world's largest dedicated independent semiconductor foundry, is said to be in the middle of a trial to see if it has the minerals for large scale A6 production - a task that will kick off before the ...

iPhone 5 delayed due to faulty processors?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 4s
Rumours of delays have dogged the upcoming iPhone 5 for months now, but the latest chatter from those apparently in the know suggests that the new iPhone may be held back until early 2012.
The reason behind the hold-up, sources say, is that the dual-core A5 processor that Apple is intending to use has been overheating.
Many have speculated that this will see Apple waiting until the A6 chip is available, which won't be until the beginning of next year.
Note the 'if'
If true, this could mean we will see a slightly updated iPhone 4S launch in autumn (another recurring rumour), with a more major upgrade made public after Christmas.

Apple Mac sales back above 10 percent - after 20 years
Like UnlikeFiled in: Desktop ComputersApple
New data from Gartner and IDC show that sales of Macs in the United States have crossed the 10 percent threshold -- which hasn't happened since 1991, when Macs accounted for 11.2 percent of all U.S. PC sales. In the second quarter of 2011 (April through June), IDC reports that Macs accounted for 10.7 percent of PC sales -- up from 9 percent a year earlier -- making Apple the third-largest seller of PCs after Hewlett-Packard (26.3 percent) and Dell (22.2 percent). Gartner's figures also put the Mac market share at 10.7 percent and had Apple moving into the third-highest sales slot.

Apple A6 chipset getting trial runs in the TSMC foundries
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
Apple's next generation mobile chipset, codenamed A6, is being produced in small doses at the TSMC foundries, for testing purposes. Even though TSMC is the largest independent chip foundry, a huge customer like Apple will be hard to accommodate in sufficient quantity and quality in a heartbeat, regardless of how fast Cupertino wants to break away from Samsung.
