Possible cheaper iPhone is an iPhone 4 look-a-like, replaces glass with plastic

Possible cheaper iPhone is an iPhone 4 look-a-like, replaces glass with plastic

Posted on Jul 29, 2011 by MG1

Cuhiep, the Vietnamese guy whose sources leaked pictures of the iPhone 4 in May last year, which turned out to be the real deal, now claims another leak "from a very reliable source", this time regarding the cheaper version of the iPhone, a so-called iPhone 4S. This affordable one might be introduced along with the next premium iPhone, about which we only know to be dual-core and have an 8MP camera with relative certainty.
We've heard about this cheaper version idea being entertained by Applenumerous times so far, but nothing plausible has appeared to back it up. Tim Cook himself said in May that the iPhone won't be "just for the rich", and that Cupertino is coming up with some "clever thing...

New iPad 3 contract goes to Pegatron, not Foxconn

Posted on Jul 29, 2011 by MG1

Pegatron has been awarded a new contract to build Apple’s next-generation iPad tablets, Taiwan Economic News reports. According to the report, Pegatron underbid Hon Hai for a new contract to manufacture the iPad 3, which will become available some time near the Thanksgiving holiday according to an earlier report. Hon Hai, owner of infamous Apple manufacturing partner Foxconn, manufactures Apple’s current-generation iPad 2 tablet along with a number of other Apple products. Pegatron is seemingly working hard to increase its production share of Apple devices, however; the Taiwan-based manufacturer reportedly also won an order from Apple to manufacture a total of 15 million iPhone 5 handsets. Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Beats Apple iPad 2 In Display Contest

Posted on Jul 28, 2011 by MG1

Apple’s iPad 2 has been carrying the torch for the best quality display, but a recent comparison test suggests that it may be ousted by the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. The test was conducted by DisplayMate, comparing the iPad 2 display to that of various other Android tablets in addition to the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, including the Motorola XOOM, Acer Iconia Tab A500, and the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer.
The attributes that DisplayMate focused on were color accuracy, viewing angles, saturation, brightness and contrast, screen reflections, backlight power consumption, and battery life of the display. The worst of the bunch was the Motorola XOOM, which scored poorly across the board. In the middle ...

Apple's Mac OS X infringes on HTC-owned S3 patents, ITC rules

United States International Trade Commission judge James Gildea has ruled that Apple’s Mac OS X operating system infringes on two patents owned by S3. Judge Gildea also ruled that the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch do not infringe on S3′s patents, however. The patents in question are related to NVIDIA graphics chips used in Apple’s Mac computers, but it is unclear which devices exactly are infringing on S3′s technology. HTC purchased S3 for $300 million in early July, and a different ITC judge recently ruled that the Taiwanese company is guilty of infringing on two patents owned by Apple related to a “system and method for performing an action on a structure in computer-generated data,” and a “...

Apple Flat Keyless Keyboard Patent Revealed

Posted on Jul 27, 2011 by MG1

It appears that in addition do their Motion-Sensitive keyboard patent, Apple has sent out a patent application for a “Flat Keyless Keyboard for Desktops & More.” This application was signed for late last week and may be entirely flat or may include at least one input surface which may be constructed of glass, metal, plastic, or any other solid material Apple might end up wanting to use. In the case of glass, the keys could be painted on the surface or shown beneath the surface of the glass on a display, not unlike on-screen keyboards working on smartphones and tablets today.

Barnes & Noble responds to Amazon with Nook iPad app update

Barnes & Noble responds to Amazon with Nook iPad app update

Posted on Jul 27, 2011 by MG1

Just as Amazon revealed that it will be offering its iPad app Kindle users access to newspapers and magazines, rival Barnes & Noble has done the same with an announcement that periodical access for its iPad Nook app will come "in the coming days".
The app gives users access to 175 magazines and newspapers although, like the updated Kindle app, Nook has also refused to toe the line with Apple's in-app subscription guidelines. It has removed the Nook store link from the app, and is now offering purchases from the browser at www.nooknewsstand.com.
An update to the Nook for Kids iPad app also sees iPad users, or users' kids that should be, get access to the Nook kids collection - over 550 digita...

Apple is in the late stages of testing a new ultra-thin 15-inch notebook computer that may or may not be an upcoming new addition to the MacBook Air family. MacRumors on Tuesday reports that the new ultra-thin laptop could either be a MacBook Air, which is currently offered in 11 and 13-inch sizes, or a MacBook Pro, which is currently offered in 13, 15 and 17-inch sizes. No pricing or release timing is being reported at this point, though a launch in the near term is unlikely. Apple refreshed its MacBook Pro lineup this past February and new MacBookAir models launched just this past week.

Apple will replace some 1TB Seagate iMac HDDs

Apple will replace some 1TB Seagate iMac HDDs

Posted on Jul 26, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Apple

If you were one of the many people that upgraded to a new iMac back in May when they got new hardware you aren’t alone. We reviewed the new iMac when it launched. The machines got new processors and larger storage drives. If you opted for one of the iMacs that had a 1TB HDD from Seagate inside you may need a new HDD. Some of those early iMacs had an issue with the 1TB HDD and Apple is looking to replace those drives for you.
Apple has said that the HDDs could fail under certain conditions and that the issue only affects a very limited number of machines. The iMac had to be purchased with the Seagate 1TB HDD between May 2011 and July 2011 and the issue affects both the 21.5-inch and the 27-in...

AT&T prepping mid-September iPhone 5 launch?

AT&T prepping mid-September iPhone 5 launch?

Posted on Jul 26, 2011 by MG1

We all know that an iPhone 5 will be coming sooner or later but the latest rumor from BGR suggests that AT&T is preparing for a launch of the next-generation Apple phone in the middle of September.
There’s no specific source named other than it’s a “proven source,” but the timing does seem to make a bit of sense. In previous years, Apple would release an update to its iPhone in the middle of summer but it held off on that this year. The decision seems to have worked, as Apple was able to sell a record amount of iPhones last quarter even without a refresh.
The company generally has an iPod-focused event in September and it would be quite easy for it to transition this to its Fall iPhone event...

Apple is recruiting additional staff at U.S. Apple Store locations ahead of the launch of its highly anticipated fifth-generation iPhone. MacRumors reports that Apple is contacting former employees and asking them to come back as part time workers from August 15th through September 15th. In emails reportedly sent from Apple to the former retail staff, Apple says it is looking for part time employees to assist with the “holidays, new product launches and back to school time.” Apple is all but confirmed to be launching the iPhone 5 some time between late August and mid-September. The fifth-generation Apple smartphone is expected to include a faster dual-core processor, more storage space and a...

Apple has reached a deal with the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority to open a massive Apple Store in the main terminal at Grand Central. Several publications including the New York Post reported the deal over the weekend, which Apple has been negotiating since early this year. The 23,000-square-foot retail shop will be the largest Apple Store location to date, and it will occupy the space currently inhabited by renowned chef Charlie Palmer’s Metrazur restaurant. According to the terms of the deal as reported by the Post, Apple will pay $800,000 annually for the retail space during the length of the 10-year contract. Should Apple re-sign the lease in 2021, the rent will increase ...

Security hack can 'kill' MacBook battery firmware

Security hack can 'kill' MacBook battery firmware

Posted on Jul 25, 2011 by MG1

Accuvant security researcher Charlie Miller on Friday revealed plans to demonstrate an exploit that would compromise the batteries, not the computers, on MacBooks. Apple's batteries reportedly use default passwords on their firmware and can have their controllers compromised by those who know the passwords and can get access to the low level hardware. The hole shown to Forbes could lead to something as simple as rendering the battery inoperable to auto-installing malware and even forced overheating.
Miller has so far wrecked seven batteries with the hack, though none to the point where they suffer physical damage. Batteries have a fuse that will automatically cut if they overheat in normal c...

Apple lands 10-year Grand Central Terminal store deal

Apple has already reached a deal for its Grand Central Terminal store. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority confirmed to the NY Post that Apple will have the location for 10 years and is refurbishing the space. Apple will start paying rent of $800,000 per year, or almost three times the $300,000 a year of the outgoing Metrazur restaurant.
MTA officials anticipated the store turning a profit for itself of about $5 million per year through the shoppers visiting the bus and train hub.
A formal approval from the MTA's financial committee is expected Monday, followed by a board of directors approval on Wednesday. Apple hasn't said when construction will start or when it expects the store to ...

Acer ready for Apple’s “Patent War” insists chairman

Posted on Jul 25, 2011 by MG1

Acer chairman JT Wang has accused Apple of starting a “patent war” but claims his company is ready and willing to fight, despite having watched as fellow Android OEMs have been hit hard by the Cupertino legal crusade. According to Wang, DigiTimes reports, Apple’s goal is “money or market influence” and that “any related losses” should be considered “as costs of doing business.”
Wang pointed to HTC’s ongoing battle in the courts with Apple, where the two companies each allege that their rival has infringed on various patented technologies. Most recently, HTC was judged by the ITC to have violated two of Apple’s patents, though the Taiwanese company protests otherwise and has promised to appea...

Microsoft hits record revenues, but still plays second fiddle to Apple

Posted on Jul 25, 2011 by MG1

Over at Microsoft HQ in Redmond there will be some big back slapping going on after the tech giant recorded a record quarter and a record year in terms of revenue in its annual report.
But behind the slaps and congratulations will be a tinge of anxiety, as its record yearly revenue of $69.94 billion is still well short of the revenue that its big rival Apple is recording - $100.32 billion in the last four quarters.
Although Microsoft and Apple report their annual revenues at different times, with the Apple figure crossing over two reporting periods, the fact is that in the last year Apple has taken in more than $30 billion more than Microsoft in the last year.
Profits are a little closer - M...
