iPhone 4 Theft Charges Dropped for Gizmodos Jason Chen

Posted on Aug 11, 2011 by MG3

Remember back a few months ago when the folks at Gizmodo had a large opportunity in purchasing an iPhone 4 weeks before it was released to the public? Turns out they did indeed get in some rather large potential trouble for said incident, but that as of today, San Mateo County prosecutors will no longer be pursuing criminal charges against tech blogger Jason Chen (or any other Gizmodo employees), though the same can’t be said about the man who sold the device TO Chen. March 2010 was the time, the Internet was the place, and the San Mateo County court in California is no longer the venue.

In an interview yesterday, the Nokia executive said that Windows Phone 7 makes iOS and Android look outdated. Weber says the big difference between the platforms is that while iOS and Android are built around apps, Windows Phone 7 is built around a user's contacts making things easier and quicker with some functions requiring fewer steps.

But Apple's endeavour for world domination didn't end there - as reports now suggest that Apple has taken over oil giant ExxonMobil as the most valuable company in the world, based on the value of its stock.
So it's official - Apple is no longer the underdog that it likes to portray itself as. It is the world's biggest company across all industries.

Apple looks to Samsung as LG fails to meet iPad 2 display demands, report claims

Posted on Aug 11, 2011 by MG3

Apple will turn to Samsung and Chimei Innolux to supply display panels for its iPad 2 after LG’s panels failed to meet Apple’s quality requirements. The quality issues with LG’s displays forced the company to miss its July monthly shipment goal by 1 million units, DigiTimes said. Reportedly, LG’s LCD backlight units failed during Apple’s drop tests. LG had hoped to ship 4 million LCD units per month during the third quarter, but only shipped an estimated 2.5-2.6 million units in July. Samsung, by comparison, provided the Cupertino-based firm with two million displays, or twice its monthly average. Chimei Innolux shipped 450,000 units during the month and the company has a new monthly shipmen...

Thin and light notebooks inevitably draw comparisons to Apple's MacBook Air, and you can probably expect a lot more of that once Ultrabooks emerge, at least at first. Part of the reason probably has to do with there not being a ton of pancaked proportioned notebooks. Intel aims to change the mobile landscape with its Ultrabook concept, and it looks as though Acer is itching to get started.

The iPhone is not just big business for Applewith other companies throughout the eco-system competing for their slice of the pie. Aside from the end users, mobile operators and accessory makers – resellers are also looking forward to the iPhone 5 (or whatever it’s going to be called) launch. Their pitch is simple – offer existing iPhone users some money for their older models, refurbish them and then sell for more.

There will be two new locations in the US. ITC to investigate Apple's second patent suit against HTC

The U.S. International Trade Commission on Monday said it would investigate a second patent complaint Apple filed recently against HTC. The complaint seeks to ban the importation and sale of multiple HTC devices that Apple alleges are infringing on its intellectual property. Three companies will be targeted in the Commission’s investigation — HTC Corp., HTC America, Inc. and Exedea, Inc. — and a target date for the completion of the investigation will be set within 45 days. The ITC ruled in a separate case last month that HTC infringes on two Apple patents, and HTC said it would appeal the judgement. Apple executives reportedly claimed recently that they are willing to settle various patent ...

For a brief period, Apple becomes the most valuable U.S. company

Posted on Aug 10, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Apple

Apple earlier today briefly overtook ExxonMobil to become the most valuable U.S. company trading on U.S. markets. With a market cap of $341.5 billion, the Cupertino based company had a $100 million higher value than the New York based oil and gas company. What makes this an amazing achievement is that ExxonMobil brings in four times the annual revenue that Apple does.
It hasn't always been this way for Apple. The return of Steve Jobs and the quick success of the iMac followed by the iPod and the world-wide phenomenon called the Apple iPhone brought Apple's stock well into triple-digit territory. The Apple iPad simply added fuel to the fire and the company recently hit a 52 week high of $404....

Patently ridiculous: Apple granted patent for something it was already sued for infringing upon

Apple won a slew of new patents today, although only three of them directly impact mobile devices, and of those, two seem to be blatantly a part of the "bogus patents" that Google sounded off about recently. We've already covered how the U.S. patent system needs an overhaul, so with this news we'll try not to get too deep into how absurd the new Apple patents are, but we will count this as the first part of an ongoing series covering the ridiculous patents granted by the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The new patents related to mobile that Apple has won include patents on: integrated touchscreens, pre-loading data on startup, and visual voicemail.
The patent for integrated touchscr...

Apple $999 iMac for education on sale: Thunderbolt and Bluetooth MIA

Posted on Aug 09, 2011 by MG1

As expected, Apple has quietly announced a new iMac variant targeted at education users, bringing the sticker price down to under $1,000. The 3.1GHz iMac uses a dual-core Intel Core i3 processor paired with AMD Radeon HD 6750 256MB graphics and 2GB of memory, and offers a $999 entry point to the 21.5-inch all-in-one desktop machine.
Storage is a conservative 250GB, and there’s a SuperDrive DVD burner though – unlike the refreshed iMac models earlier this year – no Thunderbolt port for high-speed data connectivity. Instead, external displays connect via Mini DisplayPort, as per the last-gen model. You still get a FaceTime HD webcam, stereo speakers, SDXC card reader and all the usual ports, h...

iTunes Replay mired in studio negotiations say sources

iTunes Replay mired in studio negotiations say sources

Posted on Aug 09, 2011 by MG1

Reports that Apple will imminently offer re-downloads and streaming access to purchased movie and TV show content as part of an iTunes Replay system are premature, new sources have suggested, amid claims that in fact the Cupertino company is yet to secure most of the necessary licensing agreements. So far, deals with at least four of the six top film studios are yet to be inked, CNET‘s sources tell them, leaving an iTunes Replay launch several months off, in all probability.
The reason behind the delay, it’s suggested, is the so-called HBO window, industry shorthand for the electronic distribution period in which HBO has exclusive rights to digital content from 20th Century Focx, Warner Bros...
