Apple - purchases Redmatica Italian music startup

Apple has reportedly purchased Redmatica, an Italian startup that specializes in digital music editing apps, according to Fanpage. The Italian blog cites a weekly bulletin from Italy’s antitrust regulatory agency, AGCM, who has approved the purchase. Redmatica is the creator of four Mac-specific music editing applications, including Keymap Pro, AutoSampler, ProManager, and GBSampler Manager. The company’s revenue last year was less than €100,000, with an income of €26,000, meaning an Apple buyout would not be costly. The Cupertino-based company is likely interested in an “acqui-hire” and looking to integrate Redmatica’s employees into Apple’s own Logic Pro and Garageband teams.

Photos of 3D Maps app in iOS 6 leaks out

Posted on May 30, 2012 by MG3

Let it be known that May 29 seems to be the new unofficial date to leak upcoming Apple products. First, alleged images of the next iPhone’s casing hit the web and now BGR claims it has received access to the rumored 3D Maps app in iOS 6.
It’s been all but confirmed by Apple for a while that the company will be ditching Google Maps in the next release of iOS in favor of its own mapping technology built from scratch. It just makes sense considering all the tension between Apple and Google nowadays. The new Maps app developed entirely by Apple would include a flagship mapping feature to view cities and structures in 3D.

Nokia Lumia 800 beats the Apple iPhone 4 in navigation test for official Nokia video

Nokia Lumia 800 beats the Apple iPhone 4 in navigation test for official Nokia video

Posted on May 30, 2012 by MG3

In an official Nokia video reminiscent of #SmokedByWindowsPhone, a Nokia Lumia 800 goes up against the Apple iPhone 4 in order to see which phone comes up with turn-by-turn directions faster to the London Eye. Using Nokia Drive, the Lumia is able to access the turn-by-turn directions in 15.24 seconds while the iPhone 4 user was still trying to access the information. And of course, this is a lopsided contest as without downloading a third party app, there will be no vocal directions or turn-by-turn navigation for the iPhone 4. With Nokia Drive, the Nokia Lumia 800 gives its user the choice between a male or female voice.

Apple’s Chinese manufacturing partner Foxconn has reportedly begun accepting orders to build an Apple TV set, according to Chinese news website Sina. The publication’s sources claim the long rumored iTV is currently in the “trial production stage,” however more details were not given. Earlier this month Foxconn’s CEO denied that his company would soon begin manufacturing a television for Apple. It has long been rumored that the Cupertino-based company was looking to enter the TV market with an HDTV that will reportedly look much like the company’s current LED Cinema Display. The device is said to feature an aluminum casing, iOS, Siri voice controls and an iSight camera for FaceTime video cha...

According to the Chronic Dev Team, 973,086 devices had been jailbroken as of Sunday evening, 211,401 of which were Apple’s newest iPad. The program, which was released to the public on Friday and runs on a computer connected to an iOS device, is compatible with A4 devices like the iPhone 3GS and iPad as well as A5 and A5X-powered devices such as the new iPad and iPhone 4. It is not compatible, however, with iPad 2 models powered by Apple’s newer 32-nanometer chipset, though this updated iPad 2 only became quietly available a few months ago.

Apple submits surprise optical stylus patent application

Apple submits surprise optical stylus patent application

In a surprise, an Apple patent application for an optical stylus has turned up on the USPTO website. Steve Jobs had derided the stylus as an input method for the iPhone and the iPad once famously saying that ‘If you need a stylus, you’ve already failed.’ However, Jobs was well known for throwing the opposition a curve ball from time to time speaking out against an idea, only to have been developing a concept behind the scenes. One example was when he said that consumers liked having a separate iPod while also carrying their phone, only to reveal the ultimate convergence device in the iPhone a couple of years later.

Absinthe 2.0, which was developed by the "Jailbreak Dream Team" (Chronic-Dev and iPhone Dev) joins Redsn0w's tool, and will support all iPhone and iPad versions, with the exception of iPad2,4 -- the most recent iPad 2 variant, shipping with a 32nm A5 chip. Apple quietly rolls out revised iOS 5.1.1 build for GSM iPhone 4

Posted on May 28, 2012 by MG3

Apple updated iOS to 5.1.1 earlier this month with several minor feature additions, but the build for the GSM iPhone 4 may have needed some additional work: the company has begun distributing a new version of the upgrade. The Next Web reports that iPhone hacker iH8sn0w posted about the update on Twitter; the new version uses build number 9B208 instead of the 9B206 used in the prior version. It's not clear just what the update provides, though the timing is certainly interesting, with today's release of Absinthe providing untethered jailbreaks for all iOS devices on 5.1.1, including the new iPad. GSM iPhone 4 users that have already upgraded to 5.1.1 won't be able to receive the update over t...
