The iPod turns 10, celebrates a decade of destroying physical media

It's hard to believe, but it's been exactly ten years since the iPod was first unveiled, ultimately changing the music industry forever. The iPod wasn't the first, it wasn't the smallest, it didn't have the largest hard drive, but it did have an iconic style and simple to use interface that led march away from CDs. When the history of Apple is written the iPod (perhaps more than the iMac, OS X or the iPhone) will be credited with helping spearhead the company's second coming. Over the years the music player has seen countless iterations and redesigns, and an expansion of the product line to include smaller devices and touch screens -- but for most it's the scroll wheel and white earbuds that...

Verizon: 2m iPhone 4 sales, iPhone 4S demand still huge

Posted on Oct 24, 2011 by MG15

Verizon has announced its Q3 2011 financial results, confirming that around two million iPhone 4 handsets were activated during the three month period, and revealing that first-day iPhone 4S sales were so strong that the carrier still lacks stock. Of the 5.6m smartphones Verizon sold in Q3, over half ran Android; that contrasts with AT&T’s figures from earlier in the week, where the iPhone continued to monopolize smartphone sales.

In a pretty sizable and scary (and weird!) security bug, Apple's Smart Cover can be used to unlock any iPad 2, even if there's a passcode on it. Here's how it works. And here's how to fix it.
We've confirmed the security flaw with our own Smart Covers and iPad 2s running iOS 5 and it's just like the video above—the bug easily exposes your iPad 2 to unwanted eyes. And though you have to jump through a few hoops to get there, it works like this:

• Lock a passcode enabled iPad 2
• Hold down power button until it reaches the shutoff slider screen
• Close Smart Cover
• Open Smart Cover
• Click cancel

From Steve Jobs Biography: Android Is A Stolen Product

Posted on Oct 21, 2011 by MG1

Walter Isaacson biography on Steve Jobs will go on sale from Monday, but Associated Press got a copy of it before us. They posted some excerpts from the book which says that Steve Jobs felt that Android is a stolen product and he is willing to wage a war on it.
“I will spend my last dying breath if I need to, and I will spend every penny of Apple’s $40 billion in the bank, to right this wrong. I’m going to destroy Android, because it’s a stolen product. I’m willing to go thermonuclear war on this.”
“I don’t want your money. If you offer me $5 billion, I won’t want it. I’ve got plenty of money. I want you to stop using our ideas in Android, that’s all I want.”
Bunch of lawsuits are going on ...

Samsung managed to ship over 20 million smartphones in Q3 2011, one report says, and this means it shipped more smartphones in that quarter than any other company, including Nokia and arch-nemesis Apple. The two latter manufacturers cranked out 16.8 million and 17.1 million smartphones last quarter, respectively.
Samsung has proven itself to be the leading Android phone vendor over the past year or so, releasing successful devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S II. Just yesterday it teamed up with Google to announce the new Galaxy Nexus, Google’s new flagship Android smartphone and the first handset to ship with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Motorola and HTC both had their time in the spotli...

Speaking during the AsiaD conference in Hong Kong recently, Samsung’s head of global mobile product strategy Won-Pyo Hong denied reports that the Galaxy Nexus was designed to avoid lawsuits with Apple. “At the time this was not really an issue,” Hong said, speaking about the design process of the phone. “I don’t know where that rumor is from.” The gossip started with an early report from an industry insider who suggested Samsung delayed its planned launch in San Diego due to last minute tweaks that were required to avoid patent lawsuits. Then on Wednesday, Yonhap News Agency quoted Samsung’s mobile head Shin Jong-kyun on Wednesday as saying, “We will avoid everything we can and take patents ...

The default setting for Apple's new Siri personal assistant app for iPhone 4S allows much of the handset's functionality to be used even when the phone is locked.
The security worry means that anyone can pick up your iPhone and dictate texts, emails, make calls and have Siri list calendar appointments, while the 4S is passcode locked.
Siri - the little harlot - will also tell anyone details and addresses from your contacts book, but it can't open apps without unlocking the phone.

New Mac Trojan virus disables OS X anti-malware

Posted on Oct 20, 2011 by MG1

According to internet and computer security research firm F-Secure, there’s a new Mac Trojan virus making the rounds. The virus has been labeled as OSX/Flashback.C and attacks by disabling the updater component of XProtect, which is OS X’s built-in anti-malware protection.
The virus first decrypts the paths of the XProtectUpdater plist files and unloads the XProtectUpdater daemon. It then overwrites the XProtectUpdater files with a blank character and also overwrites the plist and binary for the XProtectUpdater.
