Samsung's Vice Chairman Kwon Oh-hyun has commented on reports about the firm's alleged exclusivity as a Retina Display supplier for the new iPad. The translation from Korean reads: ``It’s a matter of allocation. There is no only supplier in the world. Samsung is just supplying displays to Apple, initially".

Nothing like a little drama in the ongoing never-ending saga between Samsung and Apple to spice up your Friday morning, eh? As legions of consumers are cashing in a vacation day in order to pick up one of Apple's newest iPads, a court in Mannheim, Germany has stayed Apple's second slide-to-unlock case. According to FOSS Patents, the decision was made for the "duration of a parallel proceeding before the German Patent and Trademark Office that could lead to the revocation, in whole or in part, of Apple's slide-to-unlock utility model." Within hours of the new iPad’s release, iPhone hacker MuscleNerd had already managed to jailbreak the tablet. The hacker took to Twitter to announce his discovery, however he notes that it is “just a first step” and there is “still lots of work to do” with no estimated time frame for a public release available at this time. MuscleNerd uploaded two screenshots to confirm his claims, one displaying root access and the other showing the Cydia app store.

As leaked earlier in the week, PayPal has unveiled its own direct equivalent to Square's reader. PayPal Here's triangular reader lets anyone with an iPhone take card payments and, as expected, PayPal payments. It claims an edge over Square in sheer variety of payment types, supporting options like debit cards, manually entered or scanned card info, and even check scanning in the US.

The latest J.D. Power smartphone satisfaction survey results are out, and Apple’s iPhone has again clinched the US top spot for its people-pleasing abilities, its seventh win in a row. The iPhone was particularly praised for its ease of operation and feature-set, scoring 839 out of a possible 1,000 points with a lead of 41 ahead of HTC in second place. Meanwhile, battery life has shown itself to be one of the biggest factors in smartphone satisfaction, with solid runtimes leading to greater brand loyalty.

iFixit saved us all a whole lot of trouble and performed a teardown of the new iPad announced last week. The internals were mostly what we expected, down to the Qualcomm MDM9600 LTE baseband. Shares of Apple stock briefly jumped above $600 shortly before the market opened on Thursday as investors anticipate the launch of the new iPad. Apple’s iPad, which is already available from at least one retailer in Australia, launches in preliminary markets at 8:00 a.m. local time from Apple’s retail stores. The tablet features a new high-resolution 2,048 x 1,536-pixel Retina Display, a faster dual-core Apple A5X processor, an upgraded 5-megapixel camera and an option for integrated 4G LTE connectivity. Shares of Apple stock had dipped back below $600 at the time of this writing.

As the Samsung vs. Apple battle continues to rage around the world, Samsung has been denied its request for an injunction against Apple. Samsung had requested a ban of iPhones and iPads in the Netherlands on the basis of a 3G patent infringement. The court determined that Samsung could not pursue a case against Apple products that use Qualcomm’s baseband chips because Samsung has a licensing deal with the chipset manufacturer.

Amazon on Thursday updated its official Kindle app for iOS less than 24 hours before Apple’s new iPad launches. The Kindle 3.0 update adds a number of improvements, including a new eBook library design, cloud view and support for the new iPad’s Retina Display. The new library design facilitates easy access to a user’s books no matter where they are stored, with a new grid view and two tabs labeled “Device” and “Cloud” much like the layout on Amazon’s Kindle Fire. The update is available now for free in the App Store.

Sharp's apparent absence from new iPad LCD production was out of a delay, not an outright rejection, an insider claimed Wednesday. It was to contribute starting in late December, according to the Wall Street Journal, but it had problems tailoring the screens to make sure they fit. New shipments could start as soon as March.
LG Display had also had problems, the tip indicated, but had met Apple's guidelines. It wasn't clear if LG was already shipping the screens. None of the companies involved would comment on the authenticity of the claims.

We've just confirmed that although the new iPad has incredibly fast download and upload speeds over LTE, FaceTime video chat still won't work directly on the 4G network. As you can see in the positively vexing screenshot above, attempting to initiate a FaceTime call over LTE fails out with a message exhorting you to connect to a Wi-Fi network. It's the exact same behavior that iOS devices on 3G networks have always exhibited, but it's doubly frustrating as Verizon's LTE plans for the new iPad include Wi-Fi hotspot functionality at no extra cost. In other words, you could easily initiate a Wi-Fi hotspot from your new Verizon LTE iPad and use it to successfully make a FaceTime call from an iPh...
