Sharp is happy to announce today that their XV-Z30000 projector has received the Control4 Certification. The projector is the latest to join Sharp’s home theater collection. It features 1600 ANSI lumens, full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution, and a 50000:1 contrast ratio. The Z30000 received the award based on its superior picture quality and the ability to display 3D content without crosstalk or flicker problems. “No matter what the content, the XV-Z30000 offers a compelling entertainment projection solution,” said Jim Sanduski, vice president, strategic product marketing, Sharp Electronics Marketing Company of America, a division of Sharp Electronics Corporation. “Now the XV-Z30000 integrates s...

Sharp Pantone 5 ICS phone has 8 color choices, 3.7-inch screen - oh, and a radiation detector
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSHARP
Color us shocked and jealous at the new Android 4.0 phone from Sharp -- strange and wonderful even by Japan's highly elevated standards. The eight colors of the 3.7-inch Pantone branded phone from carrier Softbank are nice for sure, but the ability to sense between .005 and 9.99 μSv/h of radiation is in a new category altogether. Though Sharp has hedged a bit by describing the detector as "non-compliant" with Japan standards at this point, the possibilities seem endless for such a feature -- the ability to constantly report your location and radiation level to Facebook comes to mind, for instance. It will be offered -- in Japan only, we presume -- with a 4-megapixel rear camera, eight Panton...

Sony and Sharp officially terminate LCD partnership
Like UnlikeFiled in: SonySHARP
Sony and Sharp have announced the end of their LCD joint venture, a partnership that was originally formed in 2009. Back then, Sony chipped in 10 billion yen ($126 million) towards Sharp Display Products Corporation and gained a seven percent stake in the company. The investment hasn't fared well in an increasingly tumultuous TV market, and the writing on the wall came in March when Sony abandoned any further financing towards the collaboration. That followed news that Foxconn would be entering the mix to the tune of ¥67 billion ($809.1 million), earning it a 50-percent stake in SDP. Sony will be selling its shares back to the company and will be granted a full refund of its original investm...

Sharp posts $1.4 billion extraordinary loss, refocuses on mobile displays
Like UnlikeFiled in: SHARP
Sharp has reported an extraordinary loss of 117.1 billion yen ($1.4 billion) for the financial year ending March 2012. The company has cited restructuring costs and inventory losses as the causes for the write-down, but also projected that its TV business would lose a further 18.7 percent of its projected sales in the current year. The company has decided to convert some of its big-screen LCD production lines into mobile LCDs as it tries to reassert its dwindling display business. It's yet more bad news after the company sold part of its LCD manufacturing business to Hon Hai, Sony withdrew from a joint venture and refused to deal with Sharp in the future, plus an 86 percent collapse in profi...

Sharp's absence from new iPad LCDs blamed on short delay
Like UnlikeFiled in: SHARPApple
Sharp's apparent absence from new iPad LCD production was out of a delay, not an outright rejection, an insider claimed Wednesday. It was to contribute starting in late December, according to the Wall Street Journal, but it had problems tailoring the screens to make sure they fit. New shipments could start as soon as March.
LG Display had also had problems, the tip indicated, but had met Apple's guidelines. It wasn't clear if LG was already shipping the screens. None of the companies involved would comment on the authenticity of the claims.

Sharp has many new HDTVs lined up to release this year. The top of the line will be the LC-80LE844U HDTV, which measures 80 inches, diagonally. The TV was recently unveiled by the company and features full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution and 3D technology. The TV joins the long line of Aquos HDTVs and features the relatively new Quattron technology that adds a yellow LED into the typical RGB grouping. The added color increases picture accuracy and creates bright and vibrant images. The TV will also include internet capabilities as well as the latest in 3D technology and 4 HDMI inputs. The LC-80LE844U is not expected to release until April and will retail for just under $6500.

Sharp LC-42SV49U HDTV Released

Sharp is proud to announce the release of the first of their HDTVs for 2012, the LC-42SV49U. This 42 inch screen comes with full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution and LCD display technology. It isn’t loaded with features like many other TVs but that helps keep the retail price down to a minimum. The TV is currently priced at just under $330. This makes the TV retail for far less than the benchmark $10 per diagonal inch. The connection panel includes a USB, four HDMI ports, a composite, component, s-video and several audio ports as well. The low retail price might have to do with the recent claims of Sharp’s poor profits last year.

Sharp Will Not Produce an OLED HDTV
Like UnlikeFiled in: TVsSHARP
Many companies are finally starting to support the OLED technology for HDTVs. However not all are confident that the OLED technology will be the next big thing. Today, Sharp announced that they have no interest in the technology and won’t be joining the others in developing an OLED HDTV. Sharp’s President Mikio Katayama stated that OLED “won’t create a new market, it will just be replacement of what’s already out there.” The company firmly believes that the downfall will be the OLED’s high retail prices and that consumers will stick to conventional televisions that cost much less.
