Posted on Feb 21, 2012 by MG1

Acer today unveiled its new S271HL S1 series monitor, an ultra-slim LED display with a scant 24mm profile and a rounded glossy porcelain-like foot stand. It has a 27-inch panel with a Full HD 1080p (1920x1080 @ 60Hz) resolution, but its real claim to fame is its 100,000,000:1 contrast ratio (dynamic, of course), along with a super fast 2ms response time.
The space saving design, impressive spec sheet, and and large screen panel combine to form a panel suitable for both work and play, according to Acer, though if you're into serious graphics work, a Twisted Nematic (TN) display is probably not on your radar. Nevertheless, for the working stiff who doesn't require an IPS panel, the S271HL S1 i...

Acer revenues recover reluctantly

Acer revenues recover reluctantly

Filed in: Acer

Acer has returned to profit after two quarters of back-to-back losses, posting a net income of NT$75 million ($2.5 million) in Q4 2011. Although Acer has avoided a loss this quarter, weak sales have led to a sixth straight quarterly revenue decline. Dwindling interest in netbooks, hard drive shortages, and the continued growth of the tablet market have all been cited as reasons for the company's troubles. 2011 has been a difficult year for the Taiwanese manufacturer, with disappointing profits in Q1 making way for losses in Q2 and Q3, and the company's preliminary results indicate an total annual loss of $212 million. In contrast, the company posted a $601 million profit last year.

Acer sues former CEO Gianfranco Lanci for joining Lenovo

Acer sues former CEO Gianfranco Lanci for joining Lenovo

Posted on Feb 09, 2012 by MG3

Filed in: AcerLenovo

Acer has sued former CEO and President Gianfranco Lanci for allegedly breaching a contract signed during his departure last year. Filed in Lanci's native Italy, the suit highlights a non-compete clause that barred Lanci from joining rival firms for 12 months -- a measure commonly taken when high-profile employees resign or otherwise exit a company.
Lanci purportedly violated that pact by joining Lenovo as a consultant last September, only six or seven months after striking the agreement (the contract was reportedly signed in February but Lanci left in March). Lanci's relationship with Lenovo expanded in January when the Chinese PC maker named him as the head of its new Europe, Middle East an...

Acer Iconia Tab A510 to hit European retailers this April?

Acer Iconia Tab A510 to hit European retailers this April?

Posted on Jan 26, 2012 by MG3

Amidst the madness that was CES, Acer quietly snuck its Iconia Tab A510 onto the showroom floor, tucking the tablet into the folds of NVIDIA's booth. While the company was more than willing to fess up to the slate's specs -- quad-core Tegra 3 processor, skinned Ice Cream Sandwich UX, 1280 x 800 display -- little in the way of pricing and availability were revealed. If a report out of Germany is to be believed, however, Europeans (sorry, statesiders) might very well see the 10.1-incher hit retail as early as this April, with a €500 price tag in tow. That's all the rumor mill's wrought for now, folks, but we'll keep you posted should the news go official at CeBIT 2012.

Acer, Asus and Lenovo will reportedly begin selling ultrabooks equipped with Intel’s fast and versatile Thunderbolt I/O port, which combines DisplayPort and PCI Express, during the second quarter of 2012. DigiTimes said mostly high-end computers will adopt Thunderbolt this year since it now costs more than $20 to add Thunderbolt connectivity to a computer. Apple was one of the first companies to adopt Thunderbolt and it currently equips a number of its computers and displays with the technology. A recent patent filing also suggested Apple may begin using Thunderbolt in iOS devices, too.
