Acer chairman JT Wang mentioned late Wednesday that as much as a third of of his company's entire notebook line may be ultrabooks. With Digitimes listening, Wang expected systems like the Aspire S5 and Timeline Ultra to account for 25 to 35 percent of all Acer's notebooks in 2012. The recently unveiled systems would be a foundation of the line and ship in spring, but more models were coming in the summer, the chairman said.

Acer's just previewed its latest entry to cloud computing, aptly titled AcerCloud, allowing users to access multimedia and data files remotely whether or not their main PC is asleep. The feature will be available free of cost on all future consumer Acer PCs. Acer's latest enlists the outfit's Always Connect service to wake up PCs from sleep mode, enabling transfer from smartphones and tablets. Among the services included are PicStream, which allows for cloud-based photo sharing, AcerCloud Docs, for storing and accessing (guess what?) documents, and clear.fi that allows for streaming of media from the cloud to almost any device. Compatibility is currently limited to Android smartphones and ta...

Acer's today announced its CES 2012 offerings. Up first, the Aspire Timeline Ultra. While we do not yet have full details (or even an image!) we do know that the ultrabook will come in 14 and 15-inch varieties, with as-yet-unspecified Intel Core i CPUs, Dolby Home Theatre v4 Surround Sound speakers, and they will feature Acer instant on, and be rated for up to 8 hours of battery life. We also hear that the Ultras will be just 20mm thick, and will have both HDMI and USB 3.0 ports. Acer says the Aspire Timeline Ultra will ship sometime during Q1 of 2012. There are no other details or pricing, but we'll keep updating as we get more information.

It was something that we expected to see soon enough, and Acer is bringing the fire with a new Iconia Tab that will feature a 1080p display, not to mention the quad-core Tegra 3 processor. We had seen leaked pics of this Iconia A700 tablet just before the new year, but this is the first time we've seen it turned on, and it's looking pretty good.

Acer Unveils the Thinnest Ultrabook, a 15

Acer Unveils the Thinnest Ultrabook, a 15" Ultrabook, a 1080p Tablet and AcerCloud

Posted on Jan 09, 2012 by MG3

It technically doesn't start for another day, but CES is in full swing in Las Vegas. As part of the fun, Acer is bringing us the thinnest Ultrabook yet: The Aspire S5. This 13.3" class laptop measures just 15 mm at its thickest point and weighs in at under 3 lbs. Specs get thin from there, the Intel Core processor, SSD and sealed battery are a given; what we don't know is the size of the battery nor the price or release date, though Q2 2012 is promised. What draws our eye more than the thinness lies beneath what's being called a "MagicFlip I/O" port panel. In an homage to the original MacBook Air, Acer is including a concealed panel for connectivity beneath the display hinge. Where the origi...

Report: Acer and Lenovo to Launch Windows 8 Slates in 2012

Report: Acer and Lenovo to Launch Windows 8 Slates in 2012

Posted on Jan 04, 2012 by MG3

CES Las Vegas is just around the corner, but, similar to years past, we already know some of the hot items that will be on show in Sin City. Last year, we saw numerous dual-core smartphones and more Android tablets than we care to remember. This year, we're expecting to see Ultrabooks, some quad-core phones and tablets and, hopefully, something Windows 8-related. Considering Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is giving the keynote address, we figure some Windows 8 action isn't completely out of the question, but will he talk about any of the rumored Windows 8 tablets?

Acer ICONIA TAB A200 is ready for purchase in the UK for $469 (£299), but won't ship until January 6

Posted on Dec 28, 2011 by MG1

The wait is finally over for our UK friends, as they have the prime opportunity of purchasing the Acer ICONIA TAB A200 right now online. Sporting a price tag of $469 (£299), it falls in line to the previous rumor we heard about, but more importantly, it’s at a competitive price point that’s close to other similarly spec’d tablets out right now.
Naturally, it’s all fine and dandy that it’s available for purchase right now, but it’s mentioned to be delivered by January 6th. Needless to say, that “by” mention could mean many things – like possibly seeing it before January 6. Then again, you’re probably better off not thinking about it coming any earlier, so that your hopes won’t be dashed.

Acer to stick with tablets despite poor sales

Acer will continue to launch new tablets in 2012 despite slow sales of the company’s current tablet models. Commenting on rumors that Acer might slow its tablet efforts in 2012 or even exit the emerging market completely, company founder Stan Shih stated that Acer would not be giving up on tablets just yet. He added that the company will continue to build smartphones as well, and that there are currently no plans to make personnel cuts in its tablet or smartphone divisions as had been previously rumored. Shih conceded that sales of Acer tablets have been poor thus far, DigiTimes reported, but the Taiwan-based computer vendor seemingly sees too much potential in the tablet market to give up. ...

If you like the thin ultrabooks that are starting to hit the market in greater numbers, but want a larger screen keep an eye on Acer. Acer is reportedly set to launch a new ultrabook that packs a 15-inch screen. At the start, Acer was only offering ultrabooks with smaller 11-inch or 13-inch screens. The sales have apparently been good enough that the company is now ready to step into the larger screen market.

The ultrabook with the 15-inch screen is being produced by Pegatron according to a DigiTimes source in the supply chain. Perhaps the best news about the 15-inch ultrabook is that the machine is said to be coming to market for $699 making it a cheaper ultrabook. Many of the ultrabooks ...

Available in either Titanium Gray or Metallic Red, the slate also features a two megapixel front facing camera and, as we observed earlier, comes packed with Acer Ring -- a multitasking manager that provides shortcuts to Google Maps, screenshot functions and other apps. Acer is all set to unleash an Nvidia Tegra 3 powered tablet in 2012, with the company's president Jim Wong confirming to T3 that the quad-core device rumours are true.
Recently, the Acer Iconia Tab A200 got leaky on the web, although it's thought that this particular tab will be rocking Tegra 2 rather than the newer quad-core Tegra 3 chipset.
Whatever the name though, it's definitely coming, with the Acer bossman saying: "You may have seen some leaked stories in the media relating to Acer launching a new quad-core tablet and I can confirm these stories are true.

Acer Liquid Express includes NFC, is free with contract in UK

Posted on Nov 30, 2011 by MG1

Acer's Liquid Express is now shipping, and if there's anything memorable about the phone, it's that it might finally help NFC spread to the mid-range Android market. The 3.5-inch Express is the same size as most of the Liquid line, includes the same 5-megapixel camera, and has the 800MHz processor of the Liquid MT. There's no word yet on internal memory, but it comes bundled with a standard 2GB microSD card. It's also free with even the cheapest two-year contracts on both T-Mobile and Orange. That means the Liquid Express is a cheap way to join the NFC future, although you'll be doing it on a phone with specs that will rapidly be from the past.

For now ASUS' Transformer Prime is the lonely king of the quad-core tablet hill, but as we'd heard a few weeks back, it looks like it'll have company soon enough. Insider sources have reported to DigiTimes that you'll be able to snag a nifty Android tablet with a quad-core GPU for between $459 and $599 in 2012. Acer and Lenovo are apparently set to target Apple's iPad tablet as well as ASUS with NVIDIA's quad-core Tegra 3 GPU tablets running Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) in the first quarter of 2012. These sources also stated that since neither Acer nor Lenovo have a direct advantage over Apple or Amazon's tablet devices, they'd only be competing for about 10 to 15 percent of the total PC...
