Nokia TV service launching in Finland in the coming weeks

Nokia is about to launch its own TV service in Finland, using its backyard as the testbed for the new offering. Touted to create a “free signature hub experience for catch-up TV services,” Nokia TV will be introduced to the Lumia users in the coming weeks, allowing them to browse or search through the available catalogues of catch-up TV services from major local broadcasters and then stream a chosen show directly to their phone. Best of all, sign up and/or registration won’t bre required with the Finnish company relying on the broadcasters’ existing internet TV business models (and user base).

Vizio Drops from #1 to #3 US HDTV Brand

Though 2011 was a rough year for all HDTV makers, Vizio had a worse year than most. On one hand, there’s Samsung, LG and Sharp, who were rewarded by an increase in US market share of 17.9%, 35.2% and 60.09% respectively (Q4 2010/Q4 2011). Vizio, once number one in US market share (Q4 2010), found the bottom fall out with a whopping 44% drop in volume during the same 2011 period! Learn more past the break.

Sony Unveils New Wave of HDTVs

Sony is happy to announce today the release of the next wave of new HDTVs. The new series include the HX850, HX750, and EX640, which include up to 6 new HDTVs. These three series are for the USA, while the EX653 and HX753 series will be releasing in the UK at about the same time. The screens range in size between 55 and 40 inches, diagonally. They all feature the monolithic design and come with 3D technology as well. They will also include the latest internet platform and allow users to access online content and even use the Skype service while watching their favorite programming. Retail prices range between $900 and $2100.

Apple may run into trouble with rumored 'iTV'

Anthony DiClemente, a media analyst for Barclays, said in a recent note to investors that he doesn’t believe Apple will be able to change the cable industry with its rumored “iTV,” AllThingsD reported on Monday. DiClemente thinks Apple could unveil an incredible piece of hardware, possibly one that looks like a “large-scale iPad,” that would tie together the Internet with the company’s existing suite of iOS apps and services. Sony entering commercial OLED TV partnership with AU Optronics?

Sony has been quiet on the OLED TV front since withdrawing its 11-inch XEL-1 from the market a couple of years ago, and while Samsung and LG showed off 55-inch OLED sets at CES this year Sony only brought its Crystal LED prototype. However, the company has always said that it was continuing development of OLED technology, and if reports coming out of Korea are to be believed its re-entry into the market may not be far off. LG Releases First Wave of 2012 HDTV Lineup

Many of the big name HDTV manufacturers have been releasing the first of their 2012 lineup this month. Now, it is LG’s turn as they announced the release of four new TV series, the LM6200, LM6700, LM7600, and the PM6700 series. Each series includes two new TVs that range in size from 47” to 60” The PM6700 is the only series with plasma technology, while the other three use LED technology. None of the series listed are the company’s flagship TV, but they are in the mid-range, which is a good start. Prices will range between $1100 and $2300.

Samsung shareholders approve spin-off of LCD business

It's been less than a month since Samsung confirmed that it would be spinning-off its LCD business into a separate company, and it looks like things are proceeding along speedily. The company's shareholders have now approved the spin-off, paving the way for the tentatively-titled Samsung Display Co. to come into existence on April 1st. Samsung Electronics will have a 100 percent stake in that company, and the current executive vice president of its LCD business, Park Dong-gun, will take on the position of president in the new firm. All of that, Samsung says, is being done in an effort to make the company more nimble and able to respond to its clients' needs more quickly.

Cisco to Acquire TV Software Developer NDS for $5 Billion

Cisco on Thursday announced plans to acquire NDS Group, which develops software for television networks, for $5 billion.
NDS, which was founded in Israel in 1988 and is headquartered in London, develops software and services "that make enjoying TV anywhere, anytime and on any device a possibility," according to the company's website. Its solutions allow pay-TV providers to deliver digital content to TVs, DVRs, PCs, mobile and other multimedia devices. The company also makes solutions to protect digital content so that only paying subscribers can access it.

Panasonic Prices and Details 2012 HTDVs - 60"+ Sets Coming in April and May

The folks at Panasonic have some big things coming down the pipe with their new TVs. You'll find a slew of impressive sets this year, but the biggest news is the ET5, which marks the company's first venture into passive 3D.
