Sceptre, which describes itself as "a leading innovator for LCD/HDTV for over 27 years," unveiled its 2012 lineup of HDTVs during CES 2012 in Las Vegas, including 3D televisions with integrated Blu-ray, a world's first, according to the company. Sharp would disagree, having unveiled a pair of 3DTVs with built-in Blu-ray players back in 2010, but unlike Sharp's devices, Sceptre's screen will ship in the U.S. sometime this year.

Sony announced three new series of HDTVs for 2012

Posted on Jan 10, 2012 by MG3

No one is more pleased than us that Sony has finally seen the light and somehow found a way to condense last year's lineup of 27 TVs to only ten new models for 2012, all due in Q1 2012. All of which fit into either the BX, EX or HX line. We'll start at the top with HX. It is broken up into the HX850 or HX750, both available in 46 or 55-inches. All the HX models are Skype ready (optional CMU-BR100 camera and microphone) include Track ID, have built-in WiFi and provide access to the Sony Entertainment Network (SEN) as well as apps like Netflix and Hulu Plus.

Another thing unlike the LC-80LE632U released late last year, the new model features the new for 2012 Quattron Pixel Plus II. The entire 2012 Sharp lineup features built-in WiFi and Sharp's SmartCentral that delivers streaming options like Netflix, Hulu, many others and an AirPlay like feature called Beamzit. Samsung's got a 55-inch Super OLED TV of its own, coming in the second half of 2012

Filed in: TVsSamsung

We're seated here at Samsung's 2012 CES press event, and the company just revealed that it'll be matching rival LG's 55-inch OLED TV... when a 55-inch OLED TV of its own. Not surprisingly, the outfit's trumpeting its terrific color reproduction, the virtual absence of motion blur and face recognition. Sadly, there's not even a model number to mark down, and a price estimate should be even harder to find. It is, however, expected to ship in the latter half of 2012. There's no color filter needed here, either, as the self-emitting RGB sub-pixels take care of themselves; since light output on the Super OLED is controlled on a pixel-to-pixel basis, you can rest assured that your blacks will be d...

Samsung's CES 2012 press conference is going on right now, and it's unveiling new products including the top of the line ES8000 LED model that packs a dual core CPU to run its apps, and an integrated camera and microphone for "Smart Interaction". Beyond that, the "Smart Evolution" feature will let users swap out that dual core processor for something heftier later on if they want to upgrade. Finally "Smart Content" is the umbrella term for a wave content and apps including, of course, Angry Birds, and an upgraded version of AllShare that pulls from the cloud, and can even control other compatible devices. Samsung OLED! (and LED, Plasma and more…)

Samsung OLED! (and LED, Plasma and more…)

Posted on Jan 10, 2012 by MG3

Organic Light-Emitting Diode TVs offer the promise of the best picture quality ever (and yes, we’re including CRT). Long “vaporware” in the TV world, 2012 might be the year we see actual models. Samsung’s 55-inch model sure seems like the real deal… maybe. They’re promising a delivery in 2012, but at the moment there’s no pricing, release date, or even a model number. We remain optimistic, but skeptical. HDGuru was told it was advancements to the lifespan of the blue phosphor that allowed development of OLED into a real (potentially) product this year.

Haier reveals new HDTVs and audio gear at CES

Posted on Jan 10, 2012 by MG3

Haier just unleashed several new HDTVs (to go along with the one we saw a couple days ago) and home audio gear here at CES. First up is the EV series of 3D HDTVs that sport a "virtually edgeless picture" thanks to a super thin bezel, and come in both 65- and 55-inch versions. The EV Series also packs 2D to 3D conversion tech, Yahoo Connected TV and the company's new Smart Home UI to access all of your media content, plus a double-sided QWERTY remote to navigate it. Next is the 23-inch Designer Series that sports an edge-lit 1920 x 1080 LED screen that comes in your choice of black, white, metallic grey or red to fit your every mood (and room color). Price has yet to be determined, but you'll...

LG Magic Remote uses Kinect-like 3D camera and interface

LG Magic Remote uses Kinect-like 3D camera and interface

LG just demoed its 3D Magic Motion Remote at its CES press conference (watch the livestream here), and it looks like it works a lot like Microsoft's Kinect — it's the same remote we spotted earlier, with the addition of a 3D camera that LG says will allow you to use full-body movements to emulate the functions of the Magic Remote. The slide we're looking at shows someone playing Fruit Ninja, a popular Kinect title, so it certainly seems like LG is working on competing with Microsoft's flagship gaming peripheral.

Toshiba's 55-inch 4K glasses-free 3DTV ships in the US early this year, can we borrow $10k?

It's not a big surprise after launching in Germany and Japan, but Toshiba PR has confirmed to us and CNET that the company's 3,840x2,160 resolution autostereoscopic 3DTV will make its US debut in the first quarter of 2012, matching the "end of fiscal year" prediction we'd heard previously. There's no details on pricetag or model #, but given its $10,000~ sticker price overseas, we'd start shaking out those couch cushions now. The LCD maintains its QuadHD resolution when displaying 2D content, however switching into 3D mode drops the resolution to 720p. Other than removing the need for viewers to wear glasses to see the effect, it also uses face tracking to fine tune the experience for up to ...

Sony has axed its home OLED TV plans, ceasing production of domestic-focused sets using the organic light-emitting diode technology, and focusing on LCD panels moving forward. The news – coming as both Samsung and LG prepare to unveil OLED HDTVs at CES 2012 this week – is the latest stage in Sony’s huge overhaul of its ailing home entertainment business, Yomiuri reports, short-comings of which are expected to contribute to $1.15bn in losses in the most recent financial quarter.

Lenovo's 55-inch IdeaTV K91 is the world's first Android Ice Cream Sandwich TV

Lenovo's 55-inch IdeaTV K91 is the world's first Android Ice Cream Sandwich TV

Posted on Jan 09, 2012 by MG3

Filed in: TVsLenovo

Back in late November last year, Lenovo's Chinese folks teased a certain IdeaTV or LeTV for launch this year, and now we finally get to see it in its full glory. Dubbed the K91, we're looking at a 55-inch IPS 3D HDTV running Android Ice Cream Sandwich (a first for smart TVs, yet not quite a Google TV), and inside it sits a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon APQ8060. Dig a little deeper and you'll also find 1GB of RAM, 8GB storage, SD card expansion, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, 10M/100M Ethernet, HDMI and USB 2.0 connectivity (which is much needed for an external hard drive to store video content). As you can see in the pictures, the K91 will come with some Lenovo cloud services, including an app store (but t...

LG Cinema Screen LCD HDTVs slice bezel to 1mm, let two players share one TV

Filed in: TVsLG

LG has been pushing its flavor of 3DTV as Cinema 3D, and now it has slipped the theater related nomenclature onto another feature, the 1mm thin LCD bezels it has dubbed "Cinema Screen". It claims this move brings the experience closer to the theater, but that's not the only new feature for 2012. LG announced it will offer Dual Play, where it uses polarized glasses to let two different players see only their perspective on the full screen at once in games that support it. Vizio demonstrated the feature last year as Versus and Sony brought it to market in the PlayStation 3D display. We'll likely get more time with those razor thin bezels once CES is truly underway, for now check after the brea...
