A month ago on the dot, we reported that Dell was firmly committed to getting the beloved tablet-optimized platform in Honeycomb to its Dell Streak 7 – even more when units were spotted running a build of Honeycomb at the most recent IFA tradeshow.
Well, it appears as though that some Dell Streak 7 owners are getting the update just a little bit earlier than the rumored date of October 7th – though, some are reporting different stories in regards to its installation process.

T-Mobile Germany starts prepping for Nokia Windows Phone
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsMicrosoftNOKIAT-MobileWindows Phone 7
Some marketing materials from T-Mobile Germany have given us a few details on what to expect from Nokia’s first Windows Phone. It’ll be running the recently-released Mango update, have a 3.7-inch convex AMOLED touchscreen, and include a navigation app with 3D rendering and voice control. Most of that we’ve already heard in previous Sea Ray leaks, which suggest the device will also have a 5 megapixel camera, and a chassis roughly equivalent to Nokia’s one and only Meego handset, the N9.

Nokia developing 'Meltemi' OS for feature phones?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsNOKIA
Although Nokia still hopes Windows Phone will round out a "three-horse race" with iOS and Android, it's said to be cooking up an entirely new operating system aimed at lower-end handsets. According to the Wall Street Journal, the OS (codenamed "Meltemi") is meant to cement Nokia's top dog status in emerging markets, where feature phones remain king. Makes sense: low-end phones accounted for 47 percent of the company's device-and-services earnings in the second quarter. We're not sure if the adage "when one door closes, another one opens" exactly applies here, but either way, it looks like we've hardly seen the end of software updates out of Suomi.

Nokia said paying app writers to support Windows Phone
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftNOKIAWindows Phone 7
Nokia may be taking a cue from Microsoft and paying developers to support Windows Phone, sources maintained Friday. In return for agreeing to write apps, teams are said by CNN to be getting both cash incentives and extra perks. These bonuses could include the gem, being preloaded on Nokia phones, or getting prominent placement in Nokia's own Windows Phone app portal.

Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftNOKIAWindows Phone 7
As Nokia prepares to unleash its first iteration of Windows Phone 7 handsets upon the world, reports have come in that the Finnish phone giant is preparing its own voice navigation and 3D maps software for the Mango OS.
The reports that come in from WinRumors, say that an anonymous tipster sent in "images of some marketing posters that T-Mobile in Germany is currently preparing for its Nokia Windows Phones. The posters were briefly displayed at T-Mobile’s on-site shop at the company’s corporate headquarters in Bonn, Germany."

Mango kills Microsoft's always-on location tracking, makes good on letter to House of Representatives
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows Phone 7.5
Remember all that iPhone tracking hubbub back in April? Sure you do -- you probably also recall Apple's denial, the subsequent Senate hearing, and the rest of the fiasco's dramatic fallout. Amid the ballyhoo, Microsoft stepped out to admit that its Windows Phone also collected location data, but quickly promised to knock it off following the next scheduled update. According to ChevronWP7 collaborator Rafael Rivera, Windows Phone 7.5 cinches it: Mango "no longer sends location data prior to being granted permission to do so." Redmond previously told the US House of Representatives that it only collected location data if a user expressly allowed an application to send it along -- a claim which...

Windows 8 Will Remember Your Settings Across PCs
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 8
Microsoft is heavily pitching Windows 8 to be its most user-centric effort yet. One such feature is the ability to sync settings between different computers, so that users can have a similar and more seamless experience moving from one machine to the next.
This means that a Windows 8 user, if he or she chooses, can share settings and personalization between home and work or school computers, or perhaps even between multiple machines within the same home.

Amazon Reportedly Interested in Buying Palm
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsPalmAmazonwebOS
Amazon reportedly has Palm in its sights and is super close to pulling the trigger on a deal that could benefit both it and Hewlett Packard. Let's face it, HP screwed the pooch with its Palm acquisition with its 180 on webOS hardware, and even though the company claims it's committed to focusing on webOS software, that was never the sole intention. It's not surprising HP is shopping Palm, but will Amazon make a move?

Asus: We're Not Abandoning MeeGo
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsASUSNOKIAMeeGo
Yesterday Intel announced it was reducing (rather than "ditching") support for MeeGo, a failed Linux collaboration with Nokia, in favor of an open-source Linux build called Tizen that it is developing with Samsung.
So does that spell the end of MeeGo-equipped devices? Absolutely not, said an executive from Asus.
"We will continue to ship MeeGo products and look forward to Tizen," Gary Key, Asus technical marketing manager, told PCMag. In May, Asus resuscitated MeeGo by announcing the Asus EeePC X101 at Computex in May. Click on the slideshow below for a hands on.
In fact, Asus expects Intel to release MeeGo v.1.3 any day now and "hopefully hardware accelerated Flash in the near future." In F...

Acer and ASUS opt into Tizen; HTC ponders say sources
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsLinuxTizen
Tizen, the platform that gobbled up MeeGo, may only be a few days old but already it’s reportedly gaining support from new companies including ASUS and Acer. The firms are each apparently set to add Tizen development to their engineer’s workload, DigiTimes‘ sources claim, with HTC said to be “currently evaluating its decision.” The shift in OS focus will mean that ASUS and Acer’s existing MeeGo device plans are put on ice, it’s suggested.

Intel kills MeeGo in favor of Tizen
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsNOKIALinuxMeeGoTizen
Intel announced on Wednesday that it will be shifting its efforts from MeeGo to the new “Tizen” mobile operating system recently announced by The Linux Foundation. The move is in line with reports from early September that suggested Intel would move on due to a lack of consumer enthusiasm surrounding the OS. Nokia launched the MeeGo-powered N9 this month but also announced in June that it was ditching the platform in favor of Microsoft’s Windows Phone OS. “We believe the future belongs to HTML5-based applications, outside of a relatively small percentage of apps, and we are firmly convinced that our investment needs to shift toward HTML5,” Intel said in a blog post, explaining why it did not...
