O2's HTC Sensation gets Android 2.3.4 update, too

Posted on Sep 26, 2011 by MG3

Not sure what was “wrong” with O2′s version of the HTC Sensation when the carrier decided to delay the Android 2.3.4 update thus far. I guess they wanted to test it out thoroughly prior to releasing the new software to the general public…

Microsoft And Nokia Release Windows Phone Porting Guides For Symbian Developers

Microsoft And Nokia Release Windows Phone Porting Guides For Symbian Developers

Posted on Sep 22, 2011 by MG1

Microsoft and Nokia have teamed up on a package of new tools aimed at getting Nokia developers prepared for the transition to Windows Phone. Announced today are three jointly developed tools and guides, the most notable being the addition of Symbian Qt to the Windows Phone API mapping tool.
The Windows Phone mapping tool, which already supports iOS and Android, serves as a translation dictionary between the Windows Phone platform and other mobile operating systems. With it, developers can pick out the API calls in their apps, then look up the equivalent classes, methods and notification events in Windows Phone.
To be clear, this is not a direct porting tool – it doesn’t do the work for you. ...

Unreal Engine 3 UDK heads to Mac OS X this month

Unreal Engine 3 UDK heads to Mac OS X this month

Posted on Sep 21, 2011 by MG1

If you are a computer gamer and you happen to prefer the Mac platform the lineup of games is much smaller that the PC gamers have access to. If there is a game made it generally hits the PC along with the game consoles whereas the Mac generally gets left out of the gaming party. That will be changing soon with an announcement from Epic.
Epic uses the Unreal Engine as the platform behind some of its coolest video games for the PC and more. About four years ago, Epic announced that it was bringing some of its most popular franchises to the Mac. That meant that the Unreal Engine needed to come to OS X as well. It has been four years since that promise of Gears of War and Unreal Tournament 3 com...

Skype Aware Of XSS Vulnerability In iOS Apps, “Working Hard To Fix” It

Skype Aware Of XSS Vulnerability In iOS Apps, “Working Hard To Fix” It

Posted on Sep 21, 2011 by MG1

If you’re using Skype for iOS on your iPhone or iPod touch, consider yourself warned: a cross-site scripting vulnerability looms in the “Chat Message” window in version 3.0.1 and earlier versions.
The hole allows attackers to execute malicious JavaScript code that runs when a victim views a chat message, enabling theft of information, including a user’s address book (see video below).
Skype says it is aware of the security issue, and had issued the following statement:
“We are working hard to fix this reported issue in our next planned release which we hope to roll out imminently. In the meantime we always recommend people exercise caution in only accepting friend requests from people they k...

Android Ice Cream Sandwich nears release: phones will be able to install Honeycomb apps

Android Ice Cream Sandwich nears release: phones will be able to install Honeycomb apps

Posted on Sep 21, 2011 by MG1

Android Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) is the upcoming major redefinition of Google’s mobile platform and while we don’t know what it will look like, we already know that ICS will run on all kinds of screen sizes - from small to large and covering everything in between. Thanks to a post on Android Developers, we also have a pretty good idea of how apps will behave in ICS with the biggest change coming to Honeycomb apps which devs are adviced to make compatible with smaller screen sizes in a single APK.
Basically, this puts an end to the confusion whether an app would or wouldn’t work on a handset. Since ICS is compatible with both phones and tablets, a developer having a Honeycomb-only app would h...

HP cutting over 500 webOS jobs, hopes to make money off webOS

Posted on Sep 21, 2011 by MG1

Earlier this month a pair of HP memos surfaced saying that the world’s largest PC maker is going to split the Palm team. The software folks will join the Office of Strategy and Technology under Shane Robison, while the hardware guys would join Stephen DeWitt in the Personal Systems Group that we’re all expecting to either be spun off or sold. Today HP announced that they’re going to lay off some webOS people, and “sources close to the company” have told The Wall Street Journal that the number of people who will have to find a new job will be somewhere around 525. Here’s the exact wording an HP spokesperson used:
“As communicated on August 18, HP will discontinue the development of webOs devi...

HTC Windows 8 tablet with Qualcomm chipset in the works

HTC Windows 8 tablet with Qualcomm chipset in the works

Posted on Sep 21, 2011 by MG1

After the rumor yesterday that Intel peeps have been scouring the floors at IDF 2012 holding HTC Android devices, likely smartphones, powered by Intel chips, now Eldar Murtazin spilled the beans that HTC has also started developing a Windows 8 tablet.
In the casual Twitter conversation he says that this is an ARM-based tablet, not an Intel machine, and the chipset inside will be of Qualcomm make. Qualcomm is a minority shareholder in HTC, which explains why the Taiwanese have this tight and warm relationships with the Snapdragon family.
Windows 8 Kal-El ARM-based tablets are rumored to list battery life in days, not hours, as one NVIDIA rep cryptically noted, but the Intel-based gear, which ...

You can buy a Windows 8 tablet on eBay right now

Posted on Sep 21, 2011 by MG1

Remember those Samsung Windows 8 tablets Microsoft gave out at BUILD? Well, if you’re really jonesing to get your hands on the next generation of Microsoft’s operating system in a touch-friendly environment, you can get one on eBay but it’s going to be costly.
There are multiple listings for the Samsung Windows 8 tablet and some auctions are reaching over $3,500. Of course, you can download the software right now from Microsoft’s developer website but the hardware itself is pretty nice, even if it comes with a fan: 11.6-inch screen, Intel second-gen i5 processor, 64 GB storage, 4 GB of RAM and all the sensors you’d want.

Stable release of Chrome 14 out now, brings a few upgrades for Lion users -

Posted on Sep 20, 2011 by MG1

The very latest software goodness from Google has arrived, with Chrome hitting its 14th iteration (celebration, anyone?). This one gives Mac OS X Lion users a little something extra, with access to overlay scrollbars within the browser. Chrome can also can also upsize itself now -- accessible with a tap of the full-screen button or the more conventional Ctrl+Shift+F. The new web audio API gives developers the ability to add fancy sound effects and adjustments, whilst native client is an open-source addition; though this only supports apps in Chrome's web store, it allows C and C++ code to be executed within the browser. Google adds that there's been the usual bug clear-out, with the whole th...

Samsung Nexus S 4G updated to Android 2.3.7, brings Google Wallet support

Posted on Sep 20, 2011 by MG1

It looks like the rumors are true, folks -- the long-awaited update that brings Google Wallet to the Samsung Nexus S 4G on Sprint is indeed here, just two days shy of missing the "summer" deadline completely. We're pretty scant on details at the moment, but the announcement has shown up on an official FAQ page on Samsung's site informing us that build GWK74 is available. If you're a proud owner of the now fully-functional device, you should receive a notification stating that an update is available to deliver the goods via an OTA refresh. We're not sure how long it will take for this to get pushed out to everyone, so a bit of patience may need to be exercised here as you wait. Let us know if...

Developers should release their Mango apps now

Developers should release their Mango apps now

Posted on Sep 20, 2011 by MG1

There is a debate whether developers should wait for the official roll-out of Mango or release their Mango-ready apps now, as Microsoft has been suggesting.
Developers reluctant to update their apps in Marketplace to Mango worry about leaving their NoDo users unsupported to chase a very small audience, and there have even been arguments that developers who release apps now will miss being in the “new release” Marketplace charts when Mango does actually come out, and then be buried deeply in the avalanche of newly updated apps.
The counter argument however is typified by the above tweet by qReadie developer Chris Sainty, which shows that there is in fact already a pretty large number of Mango...

HTC rumored to work on Android devices with Intel chips inside

HTC rumored to work on Android devices with Intel chips inside

Posted on Sep 20, 2011 by MG1

Just as there will be Windows 8 tablets with NVIDIA, Qualcomm and Texas Instruments ARM-based chips, so goes the other way around - we will see Android devices, powered by Intel silicon.
In fact, rumors suggest that Intel employees have been walking the floors at IDF 2012 with HTC-made devices in hand running Android, but powered by an Intel chipset, which will be previewed around CES or MWC time early 2012.
Google's Andy Rubin announced a strategic move the other day to support Intel's x86 architecture in the next versions of Android, and the announcement was scheduled for the same day when Microsoft introduced Windows 8 running on ARMed tablets.
Now what is HTC doing sniffing around and ...
