Grand Theft Auto III headed to iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and Android

Grand Theft Auto III headed to iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and Android

Posted on Oct 14, 2011 by MG15

Grand Theft Auto III is a game us Pocket-linters remember with great affection. We have so many fantastic memories of tearing through one of the first ever truly open world games, wrecking every car in our path and generally smashing people to pieces.

Since then, the GTA series has continued to innovate. Chinatown Wars is one of the best gaming apps currently available on iOS, its top down open world adventuring being quite unlike anything else on smartphones or tablets. It never, however, quite achieved the levels of greatness that were possible in GTA III, leaving our iPhones and iPads free from the joys of decimating liberty city.

Early problems hamper iCloud, iOS 5 installations

Early problems hamper iCloud, iOS 5 installations

Posted on Oct 14, 2011 by MG15

Some people have been encountering serious problems within the first day of using iCloud and iOS 5, complaints indicate. At the moment Apple itself is acknowledging "intermittent slowness" when accessing iCloud, an issue that began around 1:37AM Pacific time but is still ongoing. Anecdotes received by MacNN suggest that people may also be having trouble loading Mail specifically.

Broader complaints have been directed at iOS 5. On Wednesday the company's activation servers were overloaded, resulting in many "3200" errors that rendered devices temporarily useless. In other cases the mandatory restore process involved in the upgrade has been failing with an "internal error," which is again bel...

Samsung and Google Android Event Moved to October 19

Samsung and Google Android Event Moved to October 19

Posted on Oct 14, 2011 by MG1

Google and Samsung will be hosting their joint Ice Cream Sandwich-New Nexus Phone event in Hong Kong on October 19th at 10:00am local time (which is October 18th at 10:00pm EST). The event, originally planned for October 11, was delayed out of respect for the late Steve Jobs.
Ice Cream Sandwich, or Android 4.0 for those of you not familiar with the code name, will unify the disparate smartphone (Android 2.x) and tablet (Android 3.x) versions of its mobile OS with a consistent UI and app framework. This will hopefully enable developers to more easily port their apps to all of the many screen sizes and resolutions that Android devices sport. As is normal with new Android launches, Samsung is e...

Fake Netflix Android App Steals Your Data

Fake Netflix Android App Steals Your Data

Posted on Oct 14, 2011 by MG15

In recent months, Netflix has added streaming support for multiple Android-based devices, but the lag time between updates created an opening for scammers, who created a fake app intended to steal your personal information.
"A gap in availability, combined with the large interest of users attempting to get the popular service running on their Android device, created the perfect cover for Android.Fakeneflic to exploit," Symantec's Irfan Asrar wrote in a blog post.
Asrar said the app is a "text book case of an information stealing Trojan that targets account information." It looks very similar to the legitimate Android Netflix app, and requests the same sort of data as the real app upon sign-i...

Dell 'very' in step with Windows 8, disappointed by Android

Dell 'very' in step with Windows 8, disappointed by Android

Posted on Oct 14, 2011 by MG15

Dell's founder Michael Dell used his own Dell World conference as an unusual platform for talking down Android while putting faith in Windows 8. While he pledged loyalty to Microsoft and said the company was "very aligned" with it, he said Google's OS had "not developed to the expectations" Dell had. Steve Felice, president of the consumer division, tried to minimize the company's lack of success, claiming that the Streak tablets, Aero, and Venue phones were shipped in small numbers to "see customer reaction and behavior."

To support his view, the CEO went on to make the paradoxical claim that his company's primary business, hardware, wasn't important. Dell provides enterprise-grade service...

Cyanogenmod releases first Android for TouchPad edition

Cyanogenmod releases first Android for TouchPad edition

Posted on Oct 14, 2011 by MG15

Cyanogenmod, the modding community working on a port of Android for the orphaned HP TouchPad, has released its first round of software for the tablet.

As you might expect with a name like "Lower your expectations", the Android Honeycomb software takes the form of a very early, reasonably bug-ridden build that means its not really ideal for regular users.

Still, there will be some brave types among you (probably the ones who got their TouchPad for £90) that won't be put off.

Google Q3 report shows record earnings, but doesn't talk Android

Google held its earnings call for Q3 2011 today and the numbers are looking good for the company. On the purely financial side of things, Google is reporting record earnings. Year-on-year revenue was up 33% for Q3 clocking in at a whopping $9.72 billion, which beat the estimates by almost $1 billion.

Movie streaming coming to the Apple iCloud?

Posted on Oct 14, 2011 by MG15

Apple is looking to take on the likes of LoveFilm and Netflix by bringing movie streaming to iCloud.

This is according to The Wall Street Journal, which has it on good authority that negotiations are currently on-going with a number of movie studios.

If the deals go through, then it could mean that users will be able to stream movies from the iCloud to their iOS device, without needing to store the content on their device.

New rumors circulating are pointing to a new October 18 launch for both Google’s latest operating system Android 4 and the next flagship Nexus phone from Samsung, which will showcase Ice Cream Sandwich. The rescheduled Unpacked event is now only going to take place in outside of the US, where the original event was scheduled to coincide with CTIA currently underway in San Diego. For US users interested in following the event, it is said to ...

New Error on Marketplace – 805A01f4

New Error on Marketplace – 805A01f4

Posted on Oct 13, 2011 by MG1

Windows Phone users are not new to errors when trying to use the app marketplace. Especially in the last few months errors and service interruptions have been common occurrences. Unfortunately there may be a brand new error affecting the marketplace. Users have been reporting an error code 805a01f4 when trying to download applications from the Windows Phone marketplace during the last few weeks.
I myself have been affected irregularly since the beginning of the week. A Microsoft Answers page for the error started up on the first of the month and is the first reference to the error that I have been able to find on the web. Most of those who have been affected, it seems, have been since ...

Desktop or mobile access to Apple's iCloud will still require the absolute latest versions of OS X Lion and iOS 5 that haven't been officially released just yet, but you can get into the website right now. Line jumpers may have noticed the site opened up to all a few hours ago, and now the design has changed, dropping the beta tag for this more inviting storefront. Hit the source link below to check it out for yourself (we've got the full breakdown here), but have your Apple ID and password handy.

How Microsoft Reduces Memory Use in Windows 8

How Microsoft Reduces Memory Use in Windows 8

Posted on Oct 11, 2011 by MG3

For the second time in Windows history, a new release of Windows will not increase its memory system requirements, but rather it will remain the same or even go down. Windows 7 required a minimum of 1 GB, the same as Windows Vista, which also asked for 1 GB. Windows 8 is likely to stay at that level or even drop slightly as the OS apparently is much more considerate when acquiring available memory resources.

In an interview with The Seattle Times, Andy Lee, president of Microsoft's Windows Phone division, took a few potshots at the competition while talking up his company's Mango platform. Mango, or Windows Phone 7.5, was introduced to some existing Windows Phone users last month and introduces 500 new features. But is it better than the competition?

Motorola Droid X2 support page talks about the Android 2.3.4 Update

Posted on Oct 11, 2011 by MG1

Well what do you know, Verizon and Motorola are preparing to launch an update for the Droid X2. We’ve no idea when that will exactly happen — as far as I know you may be getting it while reading this — but since the update already got a dedicated page at Verizon’s website (PDF file is here), I assume this will happen sooner rather than later.

Later this week, iOS gamers will have a lot to take in as both the iPhone 4S and iOS 5 will launch. The iPhone 4S will have Apple’s A5 dual-core chip running its innards which promise a 7x graphical improvement over the iPhone 4 and many of the benefits of iOS 5 are things gamers will gladly embrace, such as the new notifications center, the use of iCloud for games, and some much needed improvements to Apple’s Game Center service.
So without further ado, let’s get to the reasons why if you’re an iOS gamer, you should be excited about both the iPhone 4S and iOS 5.
