Nexus S Ice Cream Sandwich update halted as battery issues abound

Google has halted the rollout of the Android 4.0 update for the Nexus S, as users started to report problems with the mobile phone's battery.
The report comes from the Google Mobile Help forum in which a statement has been posted by Google community manager Paul Wilcox, stating that:
"If you received an update notification a little while ago but the update isn't currently available for your phone, this is likely the result of Google pausing the update in your area while we monitor feedback."

Distimo report finds the WP7 Marketplace has passed Blackberry App World

In their look back over the past year, Distimo has confirmed in their monthly report that Marketplace is now the 3rd largest app platform, after iOS and the Android Marketplace, and the 4th largest app store, after the iPhone app store, iPad app store and Android Marketplace.
Blackberry App world takes up the 5th position followed by the Nokia Ovi store.
Of note is that Marketplace showed the biggest growth of over 400% year on year, and that the Marketplace for Windows Mobile never passed 2500 available apps.

Intel's 32nm Medfield system-on-chip has been teased all year as the platform for the company's big leap into mobile devices, and now we finally have some real hands-on feedback to report about it. The MIT Technology Review team was allowed to have a brief play with a pair of Medfield prototypes running Android — a phone similar in size to the iPhone that was on Gingerbread and a tablet close to the iPad 2 in thickness running Ice Cream Sandwich — and came away impressed. Apple Takes One Small Step Against HTC, One Giant Leap Against Android

Apple has been duking it out with Android manufacturers for the past couple years, and very few are safe. Samsung has already suffered some big losses with the banning of its Galaxy Tab in Germany and Australia. HTC, however, has remained mostly safe from Apple’s wrath.
In July the Taiwanese manufacturer had a close call, as Administrative Law Judge Carl Charneski ruled that HTC was infringing two of Apple’s proposed 10 patents. Of course, before any serious action could be taken the ITC needed to have a look, which is exactly what’s happened.

Over 700,000 Android devices are being activated every day

Andy Rubin (pictured above, left), the father of Google’s mobile operating system, just posted this status update on his Google+ account: “There are now over 700,000 Android devices activated every day.” At first glance it comes off as a hugely impressive number, that’s almost 5 million devices per week, but according to our estimates Android growth is slowing down. Apple's new iOS 5.0.1 build fixes SIM card errors for iPhone 4S

As we reported a few days ago, Apple has released a new build of iOS 5.0.1 specifically for iPhone 4S owners — but now we have official word from Apple as to what this update brings. Officially, this new build is designed to fix the pesky "No SIM card" errors that some users have experienced, though there's also new access to the iPhone's file system, which may enable loads of Siri hacking. Unfortunately, this isn't a delta update (which allows you to download only the updated parts of the OS over the air) — you'll need to back up your iPhone, download the software update, and do a full restore from scratch. Still, that's a small price to pay if your phone's SIM card has been acting up.

There are more than just a couple of mobile operating systems out there in the world, believe it or not ladies and gentlemen, and if Samsung has anything to say about it in 2012, you’ll know the third heat to be Bada. We’ve had our hands on a few devices late this year running Samsung’s own personal brand of operating system, each of these devices with the lovely “Wave” name attached to them, and we’re to understand today that an update will be coming to a handful of these devices inside 2012. Hopefully it’ll be early on in the year as the last time we heard the Bada 2.0 update was swinging through was inside 2011, and that’s no longer looking too likely.

Okay, Windows Phone handsets may not be perfect when it comes to malware and exploits, but they are definitely safer than their Android counterparts, don't you think? Well, we now know of at least one person in the world who would disagree with that statement, and the disturbing part is that their job expects them to be much more knowledgeable on the matter.
What you see below is an excerpt from a conversation between an Orange service representative and a subscriber. In a nutshell, the unsuspecting user is being misled into believing that Windows Phone devices are prone to getting viruses, while Android smartphones are more or less immune to such problems.

ITC bans U.S. import of multiple HTC devices in Apple patent ruling

A judge with the United States International Trade Commission (ITC) ruled Monday that HTC is guilty of infringing Apple’s patents in several devices. The ITC also ordered a ban on the import of several of HTC’s smartphones although it is unclear which models are affected. While fragmentation is a rare(r) problem on iOS there's still quite a few users rocking older versions on their devices. Unfortunately for them, ever since a recent update on the 16th they haven't been able to download any new apps from the App Store straight to their devices. While users of older iPod Touches and iPhones stuck on 3.1.3 by choice or incompatibility with newer OSes can still update the apps they already have and transfer software from iTunes on a computer, they can't buy or install new ones directly from the device. Motorola Xoom receives early Android 4.0.3 build as Google adds source code to AOSP

Since Android 4.0.3 is the "base version" for Ice Cream Sandwich, Google has added the source code for it to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). The build supports two devices — we've already seen the update roll out for the Nexus S, but the other is a device that was also launched in direct partnership with Google: the Motorola Xoom (Wi-Fi). True to form, the enterprising hackers at XDA-Developers have already compiled it into a bootable ROM for the Motorola Xoom.
The build is certainly not for the faint of heart: the camera doesn't work and there are likely plenty of other bugs, and as an AOSP-build it also doesn't include Google Apps. All that might be the bad news, but the good news ...

Back in May, the Samsung Galaxy Tab was updated to Gingerbread over in Italy. In the States, regional carrier U.S. Cellular is now updating the Samsung Galaxy Tab to Android 2.3.5. The 7 inch tablet launched with Froyo so users of the Galaxy Tab on the U.S. Cellular pipeline are going to feel as if they have a brand new device in their hand.
