HTC Wildfire S gets Android 2.3.5 update along with Sense 2.1

HTC Wildfire S gets Android 2.3.5 update along with Sense 2.1

Posted on Dec 19, 2011 by MG1

Well what do you know – HTC released the Android 2.3.5 update for its low-end Wildfire S smartphone. Along with the latest version of Gingerbread, there’s also the new Sense software (version 2.1), which mimics some of the aspects of the Sense UI on the HTC Sensation. However, you shouldn’t expect all of the features since there’s not enough horse power under the Wildfire S’ hood. There is the new interactive lock screen as well as few other graphic changes and that’s about it.
The update is said to be rolling out across Europe as we speak and if you still haven’t got it, you can manually check – hit “Settings,” “About phone” and the “Software updates.” From here you’ll be able to see whethe...

Adobe Flash updated for Android 4.0

Adobe Flash updated for Android 4.0

Posted on Dec 16, 2011 by MG1

That certainly didn't take too long. The same day that the Galaxy Nexus (and therefore Ice Cream Sandwich) made its official debut in the US, Adobe updted the Flash player for compatibility with the new Android OS.
There had been some slight worry that Adobe wouldn't update Flash all that quickly and would leave Galaxy Nexus owners out of the loop, but those fears have been addressed. Today, Adobe released an update bringing Flash to version 11.1.112.60. The update really doesn't do anything except add ICS support, although Adobe does list a few known issues to be aware of, including:
Seeking while video is paused will not update the frame on ICS device
StageVideo using On2 and Sorenson doe...

Sony Ericsson crowd-sourcing ICS preview ROMs

Sony Ericsson crowd-sourcing ICS preview ROMs

Posted on Dec 16, 2011 by MG1

This is one of the coolest stories we've come across in a while. Sony Ericsson is really taking the update to Android 4.0 seriously by releasing alpha builds for certain phones and even asking for community help in the process.
Sony Ericsson has released alpha builds of Android 4.0 for the Xperia Ray, Xperia Arc S, and Xperia Neo V handsets. This is well ahead of the scheduled release of the updates, but SE has a really cool plan here. While these ROMs are not intended for casual users or daily use, SE is pushing for users to use the xda forums to talk about the builds and help SE to build the ROMs better, and more quickly. This is a great gesture of openness that we're hoping catches on wit...

Google pulls Android Market malware that exploits SMS hole

Google pulls Android Market malware that exploits SMS hole

Posted on Dec 15, 2011 by MG1

Google's reportedly pulled 22 malicious apps after two security firms tipped them off that the malware was tricking users into sending SMS messages to premium-rate phone lines. Android.RuFraud poses as popular games like Angry Birds, Assassins Creed or Tetris and can affect users across Europe and Russia. Fortunately the apps are easily spotted and deleted, but were downloaded 14,000 times before being pulled -- so if you see anyone experiencing similar issues, you can let 'em know how to solve it.

How to Benchmark Your Android Phone for Free

How to Benchmark Your Android Phone for Free

Posted on Dec 15, 2011 by MG1

Car nuts race their rides to see whose machine is the fastest. Fitness fanatics run marathons to test their physical limitations and endurance against that of their fellows. Geeks and gearheads? Our battles are fought and won on the basis of how capable our hardware is. While our desktops and laptops might be a thing of wonder to behold, carrying them around with us for the sake of collecting the accolades we deserve isn’t always convenient. Carrying around a smartphone or tablet, however, is. Benchmarking also provides the added benefit of telling you how well your phone manages the current version of your handset’s operating system and apps, as well as whether future OS upgrades will slow ...

Where Does webOS Go From Here?

Where Does webOS Go From Here?

Posted on Dec 15, 2011 by MG1

Praise tech Jesus, webOS still has a pulse! The mobile OS seemingly doomed to a cold eternity in a digital graveyard has been granted an open source reprieve. Great! Only question is, what comes next?
Obviously webOS is a platform built for smartphones and tablets, but HP making it open source means people can find some weird uses for the little OS that could. How would webOS be best put to use? We already know we'll probably see another tablet from HP. They've conceded that much and we like that. A lot. But we've got some other ideas for how webOS could be used.

Ice Cream Sandwich gets its HTML5 scorecard

Ice Cream Sandwich gets its HTML5 scorecard

Posted on Dec 15, 2011 by MG1

Sencha has put together an HTML 5 scorecard for Ice Cream Sandwich using the new Samsung Galaxy Nexus, and has found that ICS is a huge step forward for Android, but still lags behind iOS just a bit in features. In testing ICS, Sencha used a variety of tests including: Acid3, SunSpider, Modernizr, Animator and Touch Kitchen Sink.
In most of the tests, ICS did extremely well, and represents a huge step forward compared to previous versions of Android. It got a perfect score on the Acid3 test, although as sometimes happens with that test, even though it got a perfect score, the Acid3 test image didn't render exactly right. Modernizr showed that the innards of the ICS browser also look good wi...

Qualcomm readies Snapdragon S4 developer tablet for Ice Cream Sandwich

Qualcomm readies Snapdragon S4 developer tablet for Ice Cream Sandwich

Posted on Dec 14, 2011 by MG1

While it’s not the first time we’ve seen the latest version of Android on a tablet, it’s fun to see Qualcomm loading Android Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.1 onto its Snapdragon S4 developer tablet.
This will be the ultimate tablet for developers to test their Android apps on, thanks to the impressive hardware specs and Qualcomm’s Liquid mobile development platform. The device packs just about anything you could want in a tablet, and therefore all the tools necessary for any type of app developers try to throw at it. It will of course feature Qualcomm’s new top-of-the-line Snapdragon S4 processors, which are not yet in any consumer products. The MSM8625 and MSM8225 are dual-core and can be clocked a...

European Xoom 3Gs receiving Android 3.2

Posted on Dec 13, 2011 by MG1

Last month, European Wi-Fi Xooms received the latest version of Honeycomb, and now it's coming to its more mobile 3G-bearing sibling. The update includes a new apps scaling feature so that apps designed for the smaller screen display better on larger devices, along with support for SD card expansion. According to forum posts by a Motorola support representative, the update is rolling out now to Austria, Croatia, Denmark, France, Germany (both retail and T-Mobile versions), Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the UK. Confusingly, the forum posts direct users towards the My Xoom support pages for more information, but nothing r...

New iOS 5.1 beta seeded to developers

New iOS 5.1 beta seeded to developers

Posted on Dec 13, 2011 by MG1

Last time we saw iOS 5.1 beta, it was pointing towards new Apple devices on the horizon and adding some new hooks into Siri for developers. iOS 5.1 beta 2 has been seeded to developers, and while it doesn't bring a lot new to the table, it does add a nice new feature for those of you who like to take lots of pictures.
The new feature in this version pertains to Photo Stream and one of the more annoying things with it. Photo Stream is part of iCloud and automatically keeps the last 1000 pictures you took. Unfortunately, there hasn't been any way to delete a single picture from your stream. Instead, you'd have to either kill the stream and start over, or leave the offending picture out for any...

Windows Defender beta gains 'offline' functionality, can run sans-OS

Windows Defender beta gains 'offline' functionality, can run sans-OS

Posted on Dec 12, 2011 by MG1

PC users have been using Windows Defender to free themselves from the bane of viruses, malware and spyware for quite a while, but until now, you've needed Microsoft's OS running for it to do its work. That changes with a new beta, which creates bootable CDs or USB sticks that can run the utility. Those interested can begin by downloading the Windows Defender Offline Tool, which'll prompt you for either of those mediums and then install around 300MB of virus hating bits. And remember, because you're statically downloading an almanac of today's viruses, doesn't mean you'll be ready for those tomorrow, so those taking the plunge better remember to stay up to date.

Android Market now allows sorting by version, device or rating

Android Market now allows sorting by version, device or rating

Posted on Dec 12, 2011 by MG1

Almost a week ago Google added some nice new bits of info to the web version of the Android Market, adding version numbers and device info to rating, and when we reported that, we noted that the new information wasn't exactly the most useful, because there was no way to sort or filter the reviews to what was most relevant to you. It looks like Google heard that, and took it to heart.
Now, reviews on the web Android Market not only offer the app version number and device associated with that review, but you can sort reviews to show specific devices, version numbers and even ratings. For the star ratings, reviews can be sorted to any rating. But, with other filters there are still a couple li...

Untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.0 showcased on YouTube

Untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.0 showcased on YouTube

Posted on Dec 12, 2011 by MG1

Love to jailbreak but hate to tether every time you reboot? Then help could soon be at hand courtesy of hacker Pod2g. He just put out a video showing off a new exploit that continues to work on an iPod Touch even after it has been switched off and on. It appears to be running on iOS 5.0 rather than 5.0.1, so some downgrading might be called for. We don't know when it'll be released to the masses, or how long it'll last once Apple catches wind, but in the meantime there are of course various alternatives if you can stomach the risks and don't mind a bit of USB tomfoolery.
