LG Thrill 4G for AT&T priced at $99 on a new two-year contract
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesLGAT&TThrill 4G
While it’s not as cheap as we previously thought, it looks like the US version of the LG Optimus 3D, the Thrill 4G, will land on AT&Tshelves for only $99 on a new two-year contract. This almost doesn’t need to be said but we can imagine that a dual-core toting, glasses-free 3D display-rocking handset for $99 should sell like hotcakes.
The LG Thrill 4G would be the first handset of its caliber to land at such a price in the US, third-party retailers notwithstanding. When the handset is released, we can imagine that some of those retailers will be offering up the handset at an even lower price. Say, $50, if not free.
On AT&T’s website, you can now grab the Motorola Atrix 4G for only $99 and wh...

AT&T prepping mid-September iPhone 5 launch?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleAT&TiPhone 4s
We all know that an iPhone 5 will be coming sooner or later but the latest rumor from BGR suggests that AT&T is preparing for a launch of the next-generation Apple phone in the middle of September.
There’s no specific source named other than it’s a “proven source,” but the timing does seem to make a bit of sense. In previous years, Apple would release an update to its iPhone in the middle of summer but it held off on that this year. The decision seems to have worked, as Apple was able to sell a record amount of iPhones last quarter even without a refresh.
The company generally has an iPod-focused event in September and it would be quite easy for it to transition this to its Fall iPhone event...

All AT&T Android Phones Released In 2011 Will Get Gingerbread
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsSamsungLGHTCMotorolaPantechGoogleCaptivateAndroid 2.3ATRIX 4GInfuse 4GInspire 4GPhoenixCrossover
The HTC Status might be a sort-of-weird, kind-of-gimmicky (with its dedicated Facebook button and all) little piece of kit, but it’s got at least one thing going for it: it’s the only phone on AT&T running on the latest (phone-friendly) version of Android: v2.3, or “Gingerbread”. Not for long, though.
AT&T has just confirmed that all of the Android phones they released in 2011 will be getting the Gingerbread upgrade treatment.
The phones AT&T confirmed:
HTC Inspire 4G
LG Phoenix
Motorola Atrix 4G
Pantech Crossover
Samsung Captivate
Samsung Infuse 4G
That sure looks like all of AT&T’s 2011 Android line up so far, to me. Anyone spot anything that’s missing?
For those of you whose pre-2011 AT&T...

Research says stereoscopic 3D viewing on a smartphone can cause eye problems and headaches
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
Have you noticed that when you use the glasses-free 3D display on the HTC EVO 3D or the LG Optimus 3D/LG Thrill, that you get a headache after a while, or when viewing the screen from a certain angle? According to a report in the Journal of Vision, this is normal and more serious eye problems can develop from staring at these stereoscopic screens.
The report, written by an Optometrist named Professor Martin Banks, was based on a test of 24 adults using a 3D smartphone. The test revealed that close viewing of a 3D stereoscopic display caused discomfort when users focused on the images closer to the screen. Images that appeared to be in the background caused fewer problems. When looking at 3D...

Apple is recruiting additional staff at U.S. Apple Store locations ahead of the launch of its highly anticipated fifth-generation iPhone. MacRumors reports that Apple is contacting former employees and asking them to come back as part time workers from August 15th through September 15th. In emails reportedly sent from Apple to the former retail staff, Apple says it is looking for part time employees to assist with the “holidays, new product launches and back to school time.” Apple is all but confirmed to be launching the iPhone 5 some time between late August and mid-September. The fifth-generation Apple smartphone is expected to include a faster dual-core processor, more storage space and a...

In 2016 there will be 2.1 billion HTML5 enabled mobile web browsers
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
Forget about the ballooning number of applications each mobile platform offers, and realize that for a lot of people, just having access to the internet on a device that fits in their pocket is absolutely mind blowing. Now browsers have been in phones for years, most notably the WebKit powered browser for Symbian devices that was launched towards the end of 2005 and was what many recognize to be the first real full HTML browser for phones. Apple changed the game two years later in 2007 with the iPhone, making a browser that was several orders of magnitude ahead of the competition at the time. Then Android of course in 2008, which ships with a browser that similar to Symbian and Apple was (an...

New Sprint roadmap says Samsung Conquer 4G pushed for August, and a mystery Motorola XT603 slated for October
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungMotorolaConquer 4G
A Sprint roadmap with date stamp from Friday is making the rounds, and it reveals quite a bit about the nation's third largest carrier handset release dates in the next month or two.
We have the Samsung Conquer 4G, which was supposed to appear by the end of July seemingly pushed for 8/21. This handset is supposed to take the place of the Sanyo Zio. This is a low-end Gingerbread handset with a 3.5" display, 1GHz chipset and 3MP camera on the back, which should be coming pretty cheap on contract.
Further down the list we spot a few smartphones of RIM's new crop. The BlackBerry Bold 9930 and Torch 9850 (aka BlackBerry Volt), are supposed to hit shelves 8/21 as well, whereas the run-of-the-mill ...

LG Thrill 4G up for pre-order today at Radio Shack, ahead of August 7th launch?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesLGThrill 4G
The LG Thrill 4G was announced at CTIA four months ago , but wasn't given its rightful time in the sun due to a much larger elephant in the room. Now the phone's launch is quickly approaching, however, and the AT&T-branded Optimus 3D is ready to get some glory. We were sent not one, but two separate emails this morning from Radio Shack insiders with a few details about the retail chain's rollout of the device. As it turns out, visitors to The Shack can be offered the opportunity to reserve a Thrill -- supposedly gearing up for an August 7th launch -- starting today with the purchase of a $50 gift card. Google Nexus S 4G to get data speed update on July 25
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesGoogleNexus S 4G
Sprint said Friday that it was rolling out a speed update for the Nexus S 4G. A patch will tackle complaints and improve speeds on the WiMAX network. The carrier said it had worked with both Google and Samsung to identify slowdown points.
The company claimed that the issue only affected a "small" number of customers, though the issues have been more widespread.
Other fixes bring improvement to how the Nexus S 4G handles Wi-Fi, boost audio quality, and add TTY (Teletype) support for those with poor hearing. Owners can start checking for the update on July 25 and, if they don't update manually, should get the patch automatically sometime within the next three weeks.

Motorola posts Atrix 4G's Android 2.3 upgrade, adds 1080p
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsMotorolaGoogleAndroid 2.3ATRIX 4G
Motorola gave Atrix 4G owners a treat at the end of the week by posting its Android 2.3 update. The update brings both the performance, polish, and interface updates of 2.3 itself as well as updates to Motorola's custom tweaks, including ones that haven't shown on other Motorola Android 2.3 revisions. Among the surprises is an upgrade to 1080p movie playback that helps it compete even with newer phones.
MotoBlur has been given both core and secondary updates. The UI layer now has an iPhone-style app dock, notifications can be cleared one at a time, and the app tray is now sortable. Media gets a lift through a gallery app that now aggregates more online and offline sources, and the music play...
