Mobile payments could balloon 76% to $86 billion this year, Gartner says
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
141.1 million people around the world will make mobile payments this year, a 38.2% increase from last year, Gartner said in a new report issued on Friday. Global mobile payment volume is expected to hit $86.1 billion in 2011, up 75.9% from the $48.9 billion recorded last year. Gartner says mobile payments are not growing as fast as originally projected due to slower than expected uptake in developing countries. In addition, the “complexity of the [NFC]” service model has impeded its ability to takeoff in developed countries. “The biggest hurdle is the need to change user behavior by convincing consumers to pay with mobile phones instead of cash and cards,” Gartner research director Sandy She...

Customers sue AT&T to block T-Mobile acquisition
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesT-MobileAT&T
A handful of AT&T’s customers are now fighting against its planned acquisition of T-Mobile. Law firm Bursor & Fisher filed lawsuits against AT&T on behalf of 11 AT&T subscribers in an effort to block the merger, AllThingsD reported on Friday. The lawyers have created a pitch site titled FightTheMerger.com and argue that The Clayton Antitrust Act gives “anyone who may be affected by a proposed merger” the power to sue in a federal court. “Government enforcement is an important part of the antitrust laws, but the Clayton Act also permits private parties who may be adversely affected to challenge a proposed merger,” one of the lawyers, Scott Bursor, said. “That means any AT&T cellphone, data or...

Leak: LG Fantasy looks a bit like the HTC HD7
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesLGFantasy
Pocketnow have managed to lay their hands on LG’s fall line-up, revealing amongst a bevy of Android handsets a single Windows Phone 7 handset, the LG Fantasy.
No specs accompanied the rendering, but the device appears to have a near edge to edge screen and similar styling to the HC HD7, suggesting to me that it will likely be a premium large-screened handset.
How do our readers feel about the design compared to LG’s previous lower-end looking devices? Let us know below.

Verizon's iPhone 4 activations slow significantly in Q2
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleVerizon WirelessiPhone 4 Verizon
Activations of Apple’s popular iPhone 4 handset slowed significantly at Verizon Wireless last quarter. The nation’s No. 1 carrier reported its second-quarter earnings early Friday morning, at which time it revealed its latest iPhone numbers. Verizon Wireless activated 2.3 million iPhone 4 units in its June quarter for an average of just under 177,000 phones each week. In the first quarter, Verizon Wireless activated 2.2 million iPhones, but the device had been available for just seven weeks in the quarter. During that period, the carrier was activating an average of more than 315,000 devices each week. It stands to reason that iPhone 4 sales would slow following the device’s debut with the c...

Still unannounced HTC Ruby caught on Flickr
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTCArrive
We’re pretty confident HTC (and other handset makers for that matter) are constantly working on new products. From time to time we manage to get some leaked image before the company officially announces the device and that’s when we turn to you, our dear readers, to share any new information we have.
That said, today we spotted a new HTC phone, codenamed Ruby, on Flickr. We don’t have all the details, quite the contrary, except the reflections of the handset on the HTC Flyer’s screen. From that “not too revealing” (to say the least) photo we see that Ruby will come with a 3.5mm headset jack, camera with dual-LED flash and… that’s about it. We’ve no idea whether it will run Android or Windows...

Nokia N9 pops up at the FCC with photos and user manual in tow
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIAN9
Are you one of those smartphone enthusiasts crossing their fingers in hope that the Nokia N9 makes it to the US? Well, none of the nation's major carriers has officially expressed any interest in offering it, but here is something that slightly raises the chances of the N9 touching US soil after all. Nokia's first MeeGo-powered smartphone has cleared the FCC, and like the case is with most handsets that make it through, both external and internal photos are available accompanied by a complete user manual.
Digging through the filing we see something that was pretty much expected, namely that the Nokia N9 boasts support for pentaband 3G connectivity – just like any self-respecting world smartp...

Opera, Vodafone sign a new three-year extension deal
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
Opera Software and Vodafone signed a three-year extension of their global frame agreement under which the Big Red carrier will continue to offer Opera mobile web browsers to its customers around the world. Included in the deal is a Vodafone-branded Opera Mini browser, which apparently is at the core of the carrier’s Internet strategy for feature phones in emerging markets. Unsurprisingly users across the globe like the idea of having a full Internet experience on their mobile phones, the fact that in turns drives data penetration for Vodafone.
The customized Opera Mini was introduced in 2009 and has seen great success. The number of active users of the Opera Mini browser is up 300% year on y...

Droid Bionic's secrecy betrayed on Amazon, by simple dock listings
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesMotorolaAmazonDROID BIONIC Etna
We had our hands on a raw version of the Droid Bionic way back at CES, but two listings on Amazon for desktop and car docking stations, uncovered by Android Central forum posters, may give the clearest look at the phone so far. As you can see in the shot above of the desktop dock Motorola's slab appears to have a chrome ring running around the outside, while the dock itself has a 3.5mm audio out, HDMI output and USB ports. There's no price or release date listed for either accessory but if you've been lusting over the beast and its rumored specs we're figuring some quiet time with these shots is just what the doctor ordered -- check after the break for a shot of the car dock and the back of ...

Smartphone sales drive AT&T's profits, shape future usage
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAT&T
AT&T reported another strong quarter, strongly backed by smartphone sales. The iPhone continued to dominate the carrier's lineup occupying over 60% of smartphone sales, while Android, BlackBerry and Windows Phone accounted for the other 40%. But what's interesting is that these devices are in the core of shaping AT&T's future.
The carrier has estimated that nearly half of its subscribers have smartphones, a trend which is set to continue. In the second quarter alone, monthly data plan activations more than doubled among users when compared to the same period last year. Why is this important? First of all, a monthly data plan adds revenue, but it also forms the habit of consuming more and mo...

Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleVerizon WirelessiPhone 4s
While you should always take such info with at least a small pinch of salt, we're nevertheless excited to share some juicy details with you, regarding the upcoming new iPhone and Verizon. In short, the arrival of the iPhone 5, or whatever, on the nation's “most reliable network” might be closer than we expect.
A trustworthy tipster of ours let us know that Verizon has started discounting certain accessory bundles for the iPhone 4, which, it turns out, usually means that they're phasing their inventory out, in order to get ready for the new handset. After that, our person says, we should expect them to lower the prices of single accessory offerings, which should mean that the iPhone 4 is real...

HTC Wildfire S officially coming to T-Mobile next month
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTCWildfire S T-Mobile
Okay, it may not come as that great of a surprise since rumors about it have been going back and forth for the past couple of days, but T-Mobile has now officially announced that it will start offering the HTC Wildfire S. Scheduled to hit the carrier's shelves on August 3, the entry-level Android smartphone will be available for $80 after a $50 mail-in rebate as long as you don't mind committing to a 2-year Classic service plan.
The HTC Wildfire S is aimed at those of you looking for a decent Android smartphone that will not break the bank. It packs a modest 600MHz processor backed up by 512MB of both RAM and ROM, which will definitely not shatter any Quadrant high scores, but should suffic...

Nokia's N5 makes Symbian-powered procession through the FCC
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIAN5
There's something bittersweet about watching a Symbian phone march through the FCC knowing that Nokia is slowly thinning the herd. This particular model, the N5, made its requisite Mr. Blurrycam debut last month and now we've got some details about what the glossy white exterior is hiding. You'll find Bluetooth and WiFi radios inside, which isn't surprising, as well as NFC for all the contactless purchasing your Finland-loving heart can handle. On the mobile broadband side of things, there's support for the 850MHz, 1700MHz, and 1900MHz bands, which means it'll work with either T-Mobile or AT&T. Besides price and release date, the big question on our minds is whether or not anyone will buy a ...
