Samsung Galaxy S II in white looks legit; Coming in late August?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGalaxy S II
We’re not sure whether we should believe the image above is legit or not. We want to believe and think it makes perfect sense for Samsung to offer the white version of its super-popular Android smartphone to reach even more users. However, aside from that image, we also have another one that looks a bit different. Both of them come from phone retailers, Digitec and Mobilefun, and we’re not sure which one’s official and which one is a Photoshop mockup.
Anyway, we’re hearing the white Samsung Galaxy S II will be released at some point in late August. I’m sure it will sell like crazy with those who haven’t grabbed the original unit because it’s “too black,” going for this one. That’s presuming ...

If Music Unlimited was not enough to satisfy your cravings for entertainment on the go, Sony's Qriocity video streaming service might just do the trick. Starting August 1, owners of the Sony Ericsson Xperia mini and Xperia mini pro will be the first to give the service a try with a number of other Xperia smartphones, namely the Xperia arc, neo, PLAY, pro and acro, to receive the Qriocity app later this year.
Qriocity will land on your Xperia smartphone via a software update so you might want to keep an eye out for notifications. The service will let you buy or rent movies and TV shows from a list of movie studios, including NBC, Universal, Paramount, Sony Pictures, Twentieth Century Fox and ...

No link between cell phones and brain cancer, European study says
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
The results of a recent European study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute concluded that there is no connection between cell phone use and an increased risk of brain cancer, The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday. There were 1,000 participants in the study, including 352 people aged seven to nineteen who were diagnosed with a brain tumor between 2004 and 2008. The report “shows that a large and immediate risk of cellphones causing brain tumors in children can be excluded,” Dr. Martin Roosli, an epidemiologist at the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute said. The results are in contradiction of a recent World Health Organization study, which said that cell p...

BlackBerry Torch 9860 lighting up the FCC? (Update: frequencies added)
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesRIM BlackBerryTorch 9850
We're not precisely sure which model this mystery phone is with the neon-green back, but we know it's from RIM, and it looks an awful lot like some of the early leaked shots we've seen of the 9860, aka the Torch. It's made a visit to the FCC under the moniker RDH71CW / RDP71UW / RDQ71UW, different designations for various frequency flavors we presume, but at this point is only being tested for Bluetooth and WiFi compliance, leaving us guessing as to future carriers. Place your bets in comments below, and feel free to speculate about when this thing might actually ship -- and what color it might be when it does.
Update: Digging deeper into the filings, we discovered that RDH71CW supports GSM ...

Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini measures up to FCC scrutiny
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSony EricssonXperia mini
We've already had some hands-on time with Sony Ericsson's pint-sized Xperia Mini, and now it's the FCC's turn. The Android-packing smartphone got measured, prodded, and generally taken apart by the commission. The device, which the company is calling the "world's smallest Android powered HD video smartphone," is certainly tiny, but lacks the keyboard found on the similarly named Xperia Mini Pro, which also recently made its way through the FCC. Both are currently listed as "coming soon" on SE's site.

US Cellular launches the messaging oriented Samsung Character for $39.99
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungCharacter
Last week, we reported that the messaging oriented Samsung Character was bound for the US seeing that it was up on Samsung’s US web site, but there was no mention as to which wireless provider would be offering it.
Well, it appears that US Cellular decided to nap the device for themselves as it’s now currently available for purchase for the affordable 2-year contract price of only $39.99. If owning a smartphone is rather too cumbersome or complex for you, then you might want to consider the Samsung Character instead seeing that it’s nothing more than your middle of the road messaging phone. Nothing really big to boast about, it features a landscape sliding keyboard, 2.8” QVGA touchscreen, 1....

BlackBerry Torch 9810 coming to Rogers
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesRIM BlackBerryTorch 9810
We’ve been hearing an awful lot about the U.S. carriers getting OS 7 BlackBerry devices, but not so much about us poor souls up north. Luckily, a few shots of Rogers in-store materials for the new Torch 9810 have slipped out. No mention of pricing, nor if Rogers will be getting the other OS 7 devices soon, like the Torch 9860, but it’s a safe assumption that Rogers and all of the major Canadian carriers (like Bell) will get at least a few of the new smartphones.
Athough the Torch 9810 looks an awful lot like its predecessor, it does bump up the processor speed to 1.2 GHz, improves RAM to 768 MB, and though the screen is still 3.2 inches and camera 5 megapixels, the display resolution is now ...

Nielsen: Android accounts for 39 percent of smartphones in the US, Apple is the top device maker
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsAppleGoogleAndroid
Nielsen's just released a study confirming what some other studies have already concluded -- that Android devices account for the single largest swath of smartphone users in the US, with 39 percent OS share as of the second quarter. That compares with 28 percent for iOS, although Apple still reigns as the country's top-selling device maker. Simply put, that's a reflection of the fact that Apple is the only outfit churning out iOS devices, whereas a bevy of companies led by HTC, Motorola, and Samsung have helped make Android the dominant OS in the states. And let's not forget about RIM, another hardware / software shop, which still commands a 20 percent chunk of the market. Rounding out the l...

Possible cheaper iPhone is an iPhone 4 look-a-like, replaces glass with plastic
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 4
Cuhiep, the Vietnamese guy whose sources leaked pictures of the iPhone 4 in May last year, which turned out to be the real deal, now claims another leak "from a very reliable source", this time regarding the cheaper version of the iPhone, a so-called iPhone 4S. This affordable one might be introduced along with the next premium iPhone, about which we only know to be dual-core and have an 8MP camera with relative certainty.
We've heard about this cheaper version idea being entertained by Applenumerous times so far, but nothing plausible has appeared to back it up. Tim Cook himself said in May that the iPhone won't be "just for the rich", and that Cupertino is coming up with some "clever thing...

Sprint to build LightSquared's 4G LTE network, get $13.5 billion
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
We hope you’re sitting down, because this next bit of news is not only groundbreaking, but damn right confusing. LightSquared, which right now is nothing more than a PowerPoint presentation bouncing around people’s laptops, is a wireless operator run by a hedge fund who originally planned to contract Nokia Siemens Networks to build out a 4G LTE network using spectrum that was once reserved for satellites. Instead of building out said network, they just announced that they’ve entered into a 15 year agreement with Sprint, who will build their network for them, but not their core operations. LightSquared’s core network, meaning the parts that aren’t the cell towers, will be managed by LightSqua...

Samsung: 5 million Galaxy S II handsets shipped in 85 days
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGalaxy S II
Samsung announced on Wednesday that it has now shipped more than 5 million flagship Galaxy S II smartphones in just 85 days. The phone became Samsung’s fastest selling smartphone when it hit the 3 million-unit milestone in just 55 days. Samsung now reportedly maintains a 56% share of the mobile phone market in South Korea. The phone maker has yet to launch the device in the United States, but our recent exclusive leak of AT&T’s Galaxy S II handset suggests that official carrier announcements could be right around the corner.

Samsung Galaxy S II with WiMAX stops by the FCC on its way to Sprint
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGalaxy S II
This Sprint-bound Galaxy S II already posed for one candid and now it also appears to have made a tour of the FCC's testing facilities. Packing CDMA and WiMAX radios, along with a design that matches the leak and and an appropriate model number (SPH-D710), this definitely appears to be the Within we were expecting. So far the only additional clue teased from the FCC documents comes from Wireless Goodness which points out it's 5mm taller and 3mm wider than Euro-spec Galaxy S IIs, but feel free to click the source link and look for yourself.

Sony Ericsson Xperia arc announced for the US, $599.99 MSRP gets it unlocked and ready to go
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSony EricssonXperia arc
Sony Ericsson officially announced it is bringing the Xperia arc to US shores, and it will be sold for $599.99 by Sony's retail stores, as well as at shop.sony.com in August. The phone has actually been available there since the beginning of July with AT&T 3G frequencies, but nothing smells as good as the official annointment.
Retailers like Newegg, BestBuy and Amazon are also onboard, and each seems to introduce its own pricing. The Sony Stores will carry the Midnight Blue version, whereas Newegg, BestBuy and Amazon will also have the Misty Silver one.
A quick check reveals that Newegg is already carrying the phone in both colors for $549 with free shipping, while Amazon one-ups it with $52...

T-Mobile responds to Sen. Al Franken's recommendation against AT&T merger
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesT-MobileAT&T
Minnesota Senator Al Franken sent a letter to the heads of the Federal Communications Commission and the Department of Justice earlier this week, stating that AT&T’s proposed $39 billion acquisition of T-Mobile USA was not in the best interest of the American public. “The competitive effects of a merger of this size and scope will reverberate throughout the telecommunications sector for decades to come and will affect consumer prices, customer service, innovation, competition in handsets and the quality and quantity of network coverage. These threats are too large and too irrevocable to be prevented or alleviated by conditions,” Franken wrote. The Minnesota democrat also said that the deal c...
