Sure, we all love having the latest and greatest smartphone from the likes of Samsung, but the power consumption driven by larger displays, LTE, and more use is making it increasingly harder to get through the day. Samsung's vice president of product innovation, Kevin Packingham, said in an interview with CNET that Korea's darling has set the lofty goal that smartphones coming out this year last an entire day under average to moderately heavy use. Netflix being sued by angry investors over information withheld

Posted on Jan 18, 2012 by MG3

The big red envelope at Netflix is about to be full of court-related documents as angry investors have hit them with a class-action lawsuit saying they’ve withheld information from them just prior to a stock fall late last year. This lawsuits is being filed down in Northern California in U.S. District Court by the City of Royal Oak Retirement System, and is being filed on behalf of “all plaintiffs similarly situated.” What they’re saying, essentially, is that the Netflix senior management staff didn’t let known to their investors that quite a few contracts surrounding online streamed content would be renegotiated at much higher costs than they’d been worked out at before.

HTC has confirmed that it is removing any lingering trace of Carrier IQ from its CDMA handsets, including the HTC EVO 3D, as it moves to address the PR nightmare of the usage-tracking system. Furore over Carrier IQ broke late last year, when it was suggested by privacy advocates that some carriers and device manufacturers were preloading tracking software that periodically sent back user-information.
“HTC can confirm that we’re working with Sprint to provide maintenance releases that will remove Carrier IQ and provide security enhancements and bug fixes beginning in January” the company said in a statement to The Verge today. No specific devices were cited, but the EVO 3D is believed to be o...

The action was taken through a US District Court in California, and is intended to discover whether a cross-licensing deal between Samsung and Qualcomm means that "Apple's buying Qualcomm chips is as good as paying for the patents." Depending on the exact arrangement, Apple may be immune to related patent infringement lawsuits from Samsung.

Apple seen selling 4.9 million Macs in holiday quarter

Posted on Jan 18, 2012 by MG3

Updated US sales estimates from the NPD Group hint that Apple sold about 4.9 million Macs worldwide during the December quarter, according to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. Data is now in for all three months, showing US sales up 12 percent year-over-year. The 4.9 million figure is, however, a lowered forecast on Munster's part -- 300,000 units below a previous target, even if that would still mean global growth of 18 percent.

RIM to unveil two new PlayBook tablets in 2012?

Posted on Jan 18, 2012 by MG3

Okay, so maybe 2011 wasn’t a good year for the BlackBerry PlayBook but RIM isn’t giving up on the tablet market yet. N4BB claims its hearing from voices on the inside that RIM is preparing to launch not one, but two PlayBook-branded tablets this year. One will be a lower-end 7-inch model and the other will be a premium 1o-inch tablet.
The 7-inch PlayBook will be much like its predecessor. It won’t feature 4G, but instead 3G+ (otherwise known as 3.5G) which is still has more than adequate Internet speeds. I’d imagine it would also get a spec bump to handle PlayBook OS 2.0 due for a release at the end of February, according to N4BB. The tablet itself is apparently slated for release some time....

After March 31st, however, new customers will only be able to surf at 3G speeds for the first 250MB. Customers interested in purchasing the plan can do so in any nationwide Walmart store or by visiting Walmart.com. T-Mobile and Walmart said the decision to add unlimited ...
