AT&T again said to be considering Dish Network acquisition
Like UnlikeFiled in: AT&T
After the company’s failed acquisition of T-Mobile, AT&T is said to be in dire need of additional wireless spectrum and may be looking at Dish Network, the second-largest satellite-television provider in the United States. “AT&T wants to get more spectrum,” said Recon Analytics Roger Entner in a telephone interview with Bloomberg. “They are a year behind Verizon in the LTE race. Dish would undoubtedly be a good combination and it would solve a lot of AT&T’s problems.” Dish acquired spectrum from the bankruptcies of DBSD North America and TerreStar Networks. President and CEO Joe Clayton said the company is open to future acquisitions, and with airwaves limited, Dish has become a valuable tar...

Kodak adds Samsung to its list of those allegedly using its patents illegally
Like UnlikeFiled in: SamsungKODAK
Despite its position as an iconic American corporation and obviously one of the leaders in photography, Kodak's days are quite possibly numbered. With a stock price measured in cents and a product that not too many use any more, the company is on the verge of bankruptcy. One thing that Kodak hopes will keep it alive is its patent portfolio and earlier this month, the company sued both Apple and HTC for patent infringement. The patents in question deal with digital imaging.
On Wednesday, Kodak added Samsung to the list, claiming that the Korean based manufacturer had violated five of Kodak's patents. These patents deal with the capturing of digital images which are then sent out through a cel...

Nokia posts details on Nokia Lumia 800 firmware update
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIALumia 800
The update will not be delivered to every Lumia 800 simultaneously, but rather will be staggered over the next two weeks through Microsoft’s standard update process. This helps each owner gets the update without any hitches. Around half of owners will get the update in the next seven days, with the remainder over the following seven days.
Your Nokia Lumia smartphone will automatically check for updates from time to time, and you’ll get a message on the phone when it is ready.
As previously, the update will be delivered using the Microsoft Zune software (or Windows Phone 7 Connector if you have a Mac).
Once you’ve received the update message, attach your phone to your computer using the USB c...

SOPA, PIPA and the continued efforts of media companies to kill the Internet
Like UnlikeToday, as you should know by now, is SOPA Blackout Day, which is a concerted effort by various companies, groups, and individuals to protest the proposed legislation which could endanger the Internet as we know it. There has been an incredible amount of coverage on two proposed bills - SOPA and PIPA - which delves into the potential dangers of the bills, and many articles even get to the core of the argument which is that we need to have a free and open Internet. The trouble with most of the coverage that we've seen is that it doesn't get deep enough into the absurdity of why these proposals exist in the first place.

Apple granted 22 new patents, including one for 'smart' clothing
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
he U.S. Patent and Trademark Office published documentation on 22 recently granted patents for Apple on Tuesday. The patents, as reported by Patently Apple, cover items including clothing technology that could be built into future running shoes, the advanced multitouch trackpads found in Macbooks, and the technology found in Apple TV. The most intriguing patent relates to Apple’s Nike + iPod product. This patent outlines a system for monitoring and controlling user exercises with a sensor inside the shoe. Unlike the normal Nike + sensors, however, the new sensors are designed to send the “tracked garment usage and detected wear patterns to the external database.” The sensor will be able to i...

ZTE bringing a Windows Phone to USA this year
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftZTEWindows Phone 7
ZTE has told AllThingsD it intends to bring a Windows Phone to USA this year. The company already produces the low-end but good looking ZTE Tania, which is being sold carrier-branded by SFR in France.
The company will likely take a similar carrier-branded approach in USA.
“We understand the U.S. market is primarily a market driven by the carriers,” ZTE U.S. CEO Lixin Cheng said in an interview at last week’s Consumer Electronics Show. “Compared with some of our competitors, we are more willing to customize our product.”
Cheng noted that Microsoft is a key partner for his company for its current “Mango” version of Windows Phone, as well as for its upcoming “Tango” low-end effort. ZTE is also ...

Canon EOS C300 cinema cam gets pre-order status, ships at month's end for $16,000
Like UnlikeFiled in: CamcordersCanonEOS C300
Back in November we joined Martin Scorsese and other Hollywood luminaries at Paramount Studios for the unveiling of Canon's latest cinema video camera, which is now available for pre-order. The EOS C300, that aims to compete directly against the Reds of the world, carries a Super 35mm CMOS sensor capable of up to 4K resolution 1080p capture, and should be helped in large part by the company's top-shelf lenses; like the 14.5 - 60mm and 30 - 300mm. When we first met the C300 we told you it'd be priced at a hefty $20,000, but that's no longer the case, instead it'll cost a less painful $16,000 for the body only. The camera will begin shipping "after January 30th," and if it seems like a little ...

Leaked Sony 2012 smartphone roadmap reveals potentially birdy, minty flagships
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSony
Grab a bowl of salt and start pinching, folks. A sales report for Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications India is floating around the internet that's purportedly packing a list of 2012's planned handsets along with suggested pricing. The 11-strong list is in Rupees, and whilst we've reproduced it in full above, it's worth bearing in mind that cellphones in the "developing world" (no offense intended) are often more expensive than the equivalent handset in the US (the 16GB iPhone 4S, for example costs $650 in the US but $882 in India).

LG Viper T565 surfaces: affordable feature phone reminds you of the past
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesLG
LG has just announced the LG T565, aka the LG Viper, but it won’t impress you with anything but its price tag - the Viper is a feature phone with a 2.8-inch display with QVGA resolution. The notable thing about the screen is that it supports multi-touch.
Designwise, the Viper doesn’t offer nothing groundbreaking, but is still rather compact and comes with a thin, 0.39-inch (9.8mm) body.
