Sprint almost bought MetroPCS for $8 billion, Hesse said yes, but the board said no (update)
Like UnlikeFiled in: Sprint
Well, well, it looks like AT&T wasn't the only one looking to acquire a competitor in the wireless business last year. According to CNBC's David Faber, the Now Network was knee-deep in negotiations to acquire MetroPCS for $8 billion dollars before its board nixed the deal. Apparently, Sprint had been trying to make the merger happen for months and the coupling was even endorsed by CEO Dan Hesse, but for reasons unknown the board shot it down. We're still digging for details, so stay tuned for more as we have it.

Samsung announces Galaxy Tab 2 (10.1)
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsSamsungGalaxy Tab 2 10.1
We already saw Samsung's Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) just over a week ago, and now the company has come clean with its 10.1-inch variant (along with a new Galaxy Beam smartphone). Aside from bumping up the screen resolution of its LCD to 1280 x 800, from 1024 x 600 on the 7.0, the 10.1 features the same 1Ghz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, Bluetooth 3.0 connectivity, front and rear cameras (VGA and 3-megapixels, respectively) and 21Mbps HSPA+ connectivity if you opt for the 3G model instead of WiFi. The 10.1-incher notably comes equipped with a 7,000 mAh battery (up from 4,000 on the 7.0), which will hopefully ensure stamina that's similar to its predecessor. The slate is unsurprisingly loaded with ...

Samsung unveils new Galaxy Beam smartphone / projector combo with dual core CPU
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGalaxy Beam
Samsung has finally started to reveal its new products at MWC 2012, starting with this refresh of the Galaxy Beam packing Android 2.3 and a 1GHz dual-core CPU. Just like its predecessor it brings an integrated projector capable of 15 lumens of brightness, enough to shoot a high definition image that's up to 50 inches wide. There's a dedicated app that activates the projection, letting users pump out video and pictures, as well as interact with games when the 4-inch WVGA screen just isn't big enough. It has a 2000 mAh battery to keep the party going -- handy when you're stuck somewhere inconvenient with a few dozen of your coworkers -- 8GB of built-in storage and a claimed 6GB of RAM (we're d...

Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsTabletsMicrosoftHPIntelWindows 8
HP CEO Meg Whitman recently told investors that the company will be shipping Windows 8 products by the end of the year, and now CNET is reporting some possible details about its tablet plans. According to the site, HP is working on at least three different Windows 8 tablets, powered by chips from Intel and Qualcomm. The two Intel models are said to utilize the chipmaker's 32nm Atom Clover Trail platform, and will come in two distinct form factors. The first is reportedly a laptop / tablet hybrid — a device type that some of HP's competitors believe in — while the second is a more traditional tablet aimed at business customers. The third product is said to be powered by a Qualcomm processor, ...

Samsung Galaxy S III 4.8″ display and ceramic chassis tipped
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGalaxy S III
Samsung’s much-anticipated Galaxy S III smartphone will pack a whopping 4.8-inch display, according to the latest rumors, along with the unusual choice of ceramic rather than plastic for the back panel. The oversized display hasn’t been detailed by BGR‘s insiders as to technology or resolution, though a Super AMOLED Plus likely offering at least 720p HD is probably on the cards. Meanwhile, Samsung’s publicly-stated intention of not revealing the Galaxy S III at Mobile World Congress next week is apparently so that it can prepare for a huge, simultaneous multi-location release.

Shockingly, the rumors were all true. The Tegra 3-powered One X will feature Android 4.0 right out of the box, alongside a streamlined new version of Sense, fittingly called Sense 4.0. Equipped with NFC, 32GB of built-in storage, and a 1280 x 720 Super LCD display, this is what HTC describes as its "all-in device." The camera comes with an f/2.0 lens and an 8-megapixel backside-illuminated sensor.

HTC officially announces Sense 4.0 Android skin with improved camera, Dropbox integration
Like UnlikeFiled in: HTC
HTC CEO Peter Chou has just announced that Sense has been updated to version 4.0. Long a bane to users who bemoaned Sense's heavy, slow interface, it looks like HTC is changing things up. The main two foci in Sense 4.0 are the camera software and the audio. HTC believes that these two areas are the most important for a phone's core experience.
"ImageSense" is designed to give you "perfect shots — every time," and is capable to taking a photo in just 0.7 seconds with a 0.2-second autofocus. HTC has also made mode switching unnecessary and added a faster burst mode. Chou claims HTC's new camera technology will deliver good results even in very low light conditions. ImageSense is also able to g...

Those of you that have been waiting to get your grubby paws on Sony's Xperia S are in luck, as Sony just confirmed during its keynote that it's started shipping globally, with the first units available at Sony's Barcelona store during MWC. Those with stellar memory will recall that's more concrete than its former Q1 suggestion. To recap, those taking the plunge will be privy to a 1280 x 720 4.3-inch display, a 1.5GHz CPU, 1GB of RAM and a 12-megapixel camera all wrapped in a gorgeous shell -- albeit one that runs Gingerbread, with an Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade in due course. Sony Xperia Ion launching worldwide this summer
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSonyXperia ion
Sony introduced the Xperia Ion at CES last month, but now Sony Mobile President Bert Nordberg has announced that the handset will launch in markets around the world this summer. The handset has a 4.6-inch 1280 x 720 display with a dual-core 1.5GHz processor, NFC support, and 12-megapixel camera. There's no word on whether the LTE radio will be carried over into the global version, though.
In our hands-on at CES, we liked the Ion's solid feel and lightweight construction, and were impressed by the display and camera. Sony hasn't been any more forthcoming on when the Xperia Ion will see an upgrade to Android 4.0, but as things stand the software adds only a couple of light customizations over ...

Sony announces the Xperia P: Aluminum unibody, shipping Q2

Sony's press event is in full swing, and the first to arrive is the Xperia P. The phone follows on from the styling we saw on the Xperia S; but it looks likely to be the middle child, with a similar Sony-themed skin atop what appears to be Gingerbread Android, still housing dual-core power under the hood. Previously known as the Nyphon, the Xperia P has a 4-inch "WhiteMagic" display encased in an aluminum unibody. This new screen technology is apparently geared toward outdoor viewing, with NFC, HDMI connectivity and an 8-megapixel camera with full HD video capability. It will also be gifted with its own incoming SmartDock, which is set to arrive alongside the phone. And that's going to be pr...

Huawei unveils K3 quad-core processor
Like UnlikeFiled in: CPUHuawei
At Huawei's MWC press conference today in Barcelona, the company has just unveiled a new Huawei-made processor, the K3. We'd heard rumblings that Huawei was considering the move, and it's a big one for the company to be sure. It's a quad-core A9 CPU, with 16 GPUs inside as well. Huawei claims it has the lowest chip temperature on the market, and the smallest footprint. Huawei compared the new processor to the chips inside the Eee Pad Transformer and the Galaxy Nexus, with the K3 coming out on top in each benchmark test. It's also remarkably power efficient, with up to 50 percent AP power saving — even at very high or very low temperatures.
