Motorola is now enforcing an injunction against Apple's iCloud push email notifications in Germany, meaning the service has been shut down for users in the region.
As Apple noted on its German support forums, push email for iCloud (and MobileMe) will not work within the borders of Germany thanks to a patent battle with Motorola. Apple, however, posted a workaround to have new emails automatically download in the background.
"Apple holds the patent to be invalid and [plans] to submit an appeal," Apple said in a translated statement.

Samsung Galaxy Beam smartphone with integrated projector announced at MWC

Samsung Galaxy Beam smartphone with integrated projector announced at MWC

Posted on Feb 27, 2012 by MG1

Accompanying the lackluster Galaxy Tab 2 (10.1) tablet announced on Sunday, Samsung took the wraps off its new Galaxy Beam Android-powered smartphone. The handset features specs that are anything but impressive in 2012, but the toned-down technology packed within the device clears room for an integrated ultra-bright projector. “GALAXY Beam provides mobile freedom, enabling a unique shared experience around digital content for everyone—anywhere and instantly—from a smartphone as slim and portable as any on the market,” Samsung’s President of IT & Mobile Communications Division, JK Shin, said in a statement. “GALAXY Beam is a device borne out of Samsung’s insight and innovation, demonstrating ...

Netflix denies BlackBerry devices, sticks with PS Vita

Netflix denies BlackBerry devices, sticks with PS Vita

Posted on Feb 27, 2012 by MG3

This week the folks at Netflix have made it clear that they have no current plans to release a Netflix app to BlackBerry. At the same time, the brand new portable gaming system known as the PS Vita, aka PlayStation Vita, has received a 1.0 version of the application in the PlayStation Store. This set of moves makes it clear which groups Netflix, a giant in the streaming video business today, has faith in for the near and extended future, and spells bad news for RIM whose struggling mobile platform BlackBerry is at its worst sales point in several years.

AMD Designing Next-Gen Playstation's GPU

AMD Designing Next-Gen Playstation's GPU

Posted on Feb 27, 2012 by MG3

Sony has begun working on its next-generation gaming console under the Playstation brand, and Forbes learned that it's none other than AMD designing its graphics processing unit (GPU). AMD is far from new to the game console GPU business, as its GPUs already drive graphics processing in Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii consoles. If launched anytime soon, the next-gen Playstation will create a rare moment where GPUs of all three major game console makers would be AMD-made. The current Playstation 3 console uses an NVIDIA GPU.

What you’re looking at appears to be what many are calling the HTC One X, a device which has been tipped to have a quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, an 8 megapixel camera on the back, and 4.7-inch super bright display. And by the looks of it, it’s going to be one fantastic looking beast!

Chrome for Android updates: recognizes app links, boosts speed

Chrome for Android updates: recognizes app links, boosts speed

Posted on Feb 27, 2012 by MG3

Google slipped a bit of an upgrade into the Android Market today. The mobile version of Chrome received a seemingly minor version bump and, much to our chagrin, left no changelog behind for us to peruse. Most of the tweaks are under the hood and, in our unscientific testing, pages appeared to load much faster and the interface was more responsive. Our immediate impressions were backed up by benchmarks -- the updated version of Chrome scored a 1,846.8 on SunSpider. The most welcome addition, though, was the ability to recognize links associated with applications. For example, the initial release never offered us the opportunity to open search results in the Google Maps app, it went straight t...

Google Selling Clearwire Stake at Huge Loss

Google Selling Clearwire Stake at Huge Loss

Google intends to sell its stake in Clearwire, but it will be at a big loss.
In a Friday filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Google said it will sell the 29 million shares of stock it owns in Clearwire at $1.60 per share. The stake will first be offered to existing shareholders, but if no one bites, it will open up to the public.
But as Dow Jones noted, that will be a loss of approximately $453 million or 91 percent.
"Google periodically rebalances its investments based on its goals and its evaluation of market conditions," Google said in the SEC filing.

Google Drive, the cloud storage service rumored to be launching soon, looks like it will include support for third-party apps and a software development kit. Google Operating System has looked at the source code for Google Docs and found several mentions of an SDK in conjunction with Google Drive, including a mention of "google-apps.drive-sdk" and an SDK "open with" command. This isn't conclusive proof, but it suggests that you'll be able to open Google Drive files with other applications.

RapidShare limits free download speeds to discourage pirates

RapidShare limits free download speeds to discourage pirates

Posted on Feb 27, 2012 by MG3

Through the death of Megaupload and the quiet shutdown of several smaller cyberlockers, RapidShare has persisted, insisting that it is "definitely aiming for legitimate use." Now, the company has further emphasized that stance by dramatically slowing speeds for non-paying users. Throughout the week, anonymous users and those with free accounts have reported far lower download speeds, and now RapidShare has confirmed to TorrentFreak that since it has "been faced with a severe increase in free user traffic and unfortunately also in the amount of abuse of [its] service" since Megaupload's shutdown, it has taken steps to make the site less attractive for piracy.

Google cuts back e-book affiliate program

Google cuts back e-book affiliate program

Posted on Feb 27, 2012 by MG3

Filed in: Google

Google has closed off its online affiliate program for digital books to the public, saying it just didn’t pan out the way the company expected. The program attracted a lot of users but very few who actually sent through worthwhile sales. The initiative was only launched about eight months ago, in June, and now Google says it will work better if it operates as a private program with select partners.
In an official forum post, Google wrote, “Google eBooks is narrowing the scope of the program to a smaller number of partners. While the program will continue privately, Google eBooks will no longer appear in Google Affiliate Network as an available advertiser.” Under the program, anyone who signe...
