Mozilla has teamed up with none other than LG for the release of its first mobile device at MWC 2012, a “source close to the matter” confirmed for ExtremeTech. What’s more - Mozilla CTO and creator of JavaScript Brendan Eich said there will be multiple partners, not just one partnership announced at the show.
The Mozilla-LG phone is expected to be powered by Mozilla’s brand new Boot to Gecko (B2G) operating system, which should strengthen Firefox’s position in the battle of browsers. The actual device will be aimed at developers, not the mass user initially.
There are no further details about specs or price of the upcoming device, but it’s allegedly possible for it to go on sale as soon as ...

Duracell Powermat WiCC could bring wireless charging to any smartphone, we go hands-on

Powermat may have a bright future, but the company's products to date have been expensive, slightly clunky and a generally imperfect solution for bringing wireless power to mobile devices. That could all change with WiCC. The Wireless Charging Card (WiCC) is an IEEE Power Matters Alliance (PMA) standard, with the potential to integrate Duracell Powermat technology within every mobile gadget. The incredibly thin device resembles those wafer-like SmartMedia cards once used in early digital cameras, with a similar form factor, but significantly more practicality. Each WiCC includes all the PowerMat circuitry found in the company's charging cases, while also doubling as an NFC antenna. The card'...

Apple releases new iCloud ad; shows everything but the kitchen sync

A new Apple commercial for iCloud shows how easily and quickly things you do on your Apple iPhone 4S show up elsewhere in the Apple ecosystem with the technology. Features like email and Find my iPhone features are now covered under iCloud and are free. But that isn't even the focus of the ad. The spot shows how you can add an app to your handset and have it pop up on the Apple iPad. Photos, music and video can sync back and forth from your phone to your Mac or PC without a cable. As of last month, Apple had 85 million iCloud users.
Right now, Apple offers 5GB of storage for free and additional storage can be purchased in lots of 10GB, 20GB or 50GB for $20, $40 and $100 a year respectively. ...

Facebook Accused Of Reading Users’ Text Messages

Facebook Accused Of Reading Users’ Text Messages

Posted on Feb 27, 2012 by MG1

Ahead of Mobile World Congress and an appearance by Facebook to explain its next moves in mobile, the social networking giant is coming under increasing strain over its use of users’ personal information. Mobile startups and operators are both fretting over the issue this week, as smartphones and the apps that come with them increasingly eclipse the feature phones of old. We’ve already seen how Path ignited the debate around privacy by uploading iPhone address books to its servers without explicit permission, just as many other apps have done without anyone realizing for some time. Path was by no means the only offender.
The latest accusation is being leveled at Facebook. In today’s Sunday T...

Qualcomm unleashes Snapdragon S4 'Pro' chip with superior graphics

Posted on Feb 27, 2012 by MG1

The standard version of the S4, aka the MSM8960, has already garnered a lot of benchmark-backed respect -- not least in the HTC One X. It's a true next-gen SoC is every respect except one: it's Adreno 225 GPU is simply a souped-up, higher-clocked version of the older Adreno 220. Qualcomm has a plan though: an MSM8960 "Pro" chip that incorporates Adreno 320 graphics and is expected to reach the market in the second half of 2012. Check the press release after the break for further details and stay tuned for a new set of benchmarks.

Dropbox app drops the beta: automatic photo upload goes official on Android, coming soon to iOS

Posted on Feb 27, 2012 by MG1

While those lucky beta testers managed to get a healthy lump of extra Dropbox storage for their efforts, the mobile app's new auto-upload feature has officially arrived. The update is now available on Android devices and we're promised that the Apple-flavored update will appear very soon. We've been playing with the beta for the last few weeks, and it's pretty simple stuff, maintaining the file size of your mobile shots and delivering them to Dropbox's storage in the sky. You can toggle the auto-upload feature, or assign it for use only when there's an available WiFi connection. For anyone that hasn't got into the free cloud storage race game just yet, you can hit up the Android Market link ...

Google's Nexus tablet may enter production in April

Filed in: TabletsGoogle

Speculation surrounding an own-brand Google tablet began late last year when Google chairman Eric Schmidt was quoted as saying the company planned to soon “market a tablet of the highest quality.” The slate is expected by many to be a 7-inch Nexus-branded device that will run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and compete with the Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet at $199. The device could also push some Android partners out of the tablet market. Speaking with CNET, DisplaySearch analyst Richard Shim stoked the fire, noting that the Google slate will enter production in April and the initial run will yield between 1.5 million and 2 million units. Shim also said that the Nexus Tablet will feature a hig...

Mozilla opens its own mobile app store

Mozilla opens its own mobile app store

Posted on Feb 27, 2012 by MG1

Mozilla thinks the world needs yet another app store. But hey, if Google can have its Chrome Store, why wouldn’t there be one store for Firefox – Mozilla Marketplace. Guess that’s the reasoning behind their thinking and voila… they’re doing it, right from the floor of Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
Interested developers will be able to submit their HTML5 and JavaScript-based apps, which should/will work across platforms and devices. Moreover, Mozilla will also provide its own set of APIs that will further enhance the capability of those apps. Speaking of which [APIs], they will be submitted to the W3C for standardization.

Veteran Googler Dennis Woodside To Replace Sanjay Jha As Motorola Mobility CEO

Posted on Feb 24, 2012 by MG1

With Google’s purchase of Motorola nearing completion, some anonymous sources close to the situation have revealed that a management shakeup is in the works too. According to a new report from Bloomberg, Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha will be replaced by veteran Googler Dennis Woodside when the deal comes to a close.
Woodside is no stranger to the Google-Motorola situation — in addition to serving as an SVP and President of Google Americas, Woodside was also chosen to lead Motorola Mobility’s integration into Google last September. Though Woodside’s selection for the spot isn’t a huge surprise considering his role in bringing the two companies together, earlier rumors indicated that Google Chief Bu...

Box gives Android users 50GB free

Posted on Feb 24, 2012 by MG1

On the heels of its latest release for Android, Box is sweetening up the pot with an offer that is pretty hard to refuse. Between now and March 23, 2012, any Box personal user who downloads Box for Android will receive 50 GB of storage free for life.
For those not familiar with Box, it is a cloud storage service, not to dissimilar from the wildly popular DropBox. The personal version is free, supports 1 user per account, and allows files sizes from 25 MB to 1 GB. It does need to be noted that, traditionally, file sizes over 25 MB subject the account to additional monthly fees. Another huge plus of the current offer is that file upload limits are being bumped up to 100MB. Once your files ar...
