If you were lucky enough to be at the International Solid-State Circuits Conference, then you might have caught a glimpse of Samsung's latest sliver of mobile silicon. The as yet unnamed Exynos parts will come in dual- and quad-core configurations running at up to 1.5GHz. Perhaps the most important change though, is the switch from a 45nm manufacturing process to 32nm. That means smaller parts that draw less power, while delivering better performance. The A9 cores are paired with Sammy's own GPU, an OpenGL ES 2.0-capable chip with four pixel processors. According to the company, the new CPUs deliver a 26 percent boost in performance and up to a 50 percent increase in battery life. Of course,...

A Shanghai court has rejected a request from a Chinese company to stop the sale of Apple's iPad in China, the latest development in an ongoing legal dispute over who owns the rights to the iPad name. According to the Wall Street Journal, the Pudong District People's Court said in a statement that it has rejected Proview's request for a temporary injunction that would have suspended iPad sales in Shanghai. It also approved Apple's request to halt proceedings until another court in the southern province of Guangdong decides on a related appeal case.

Asus teases Retina Display Tablet for MWC 2012?

Posted on Feb 24, 2012 by MG15

The iPad 3 is going to double the resolution with its new Retina Display. I already pointed out in this report that I believe that the Android camp will try to beat Apple to the punch with a Retina display tablet. It could well be that Asus will show a tablet with retina display resolution at the MWC 2012. Asus released another MWC 2012 teaser video. The new one is titled: "Twice the Detail, Twice the Fun." The teaser is clearly about display resolution. The form factor of the box filled with balls resembles a tablet. Watch the Asus teaser video below. Earlier today we reported about another Asus MWC 2012 teaser video that is about a new transformer tablet with smartphone integration.

Windows support will last forever (almost), thank you Microsoft!

Posted on Feb 24, 2012 by MG15

Just when you needed one more reason to carry on loving Windows Vista, Microsoft has gone and increased its customer support period. An extension has also been granted to Windows 7, which will get a full ten years of support instead of the usual five. There's been no announcement or fanfare, except for a brief communication from Microsoft Japan that sets out the new end dates. XP's support will stop in 2014, Vista's will shut down in 2017 and Windows 7's will come to a close in post-apocalyptic 2020, at which point call center staff will no doubt throw a party on Europa.

NEC shows MWC world phones: dual-screen, Android 4.0

Posted on Feb 24, 2012 by MG15

Joint partnership NEC-Casio Mobile gave a preview Thursday of the Medias-badged devices it would have at Mobile World Congress as part of a major push into smartphones outside of Japan. Topping the group is an unusual dual-screen device, so far only known as the Best Cloud UX Device. The device carries two 4.3-inch screens and folds like a reverse book, with both screens on the outside; the Android 4.0 device becomes more of a tablet ideal for the cloud, NEC claims. A more conventional if still rare device, the Large Screen in One Hand, aims to improve on the phone and tablet crossover idea embodied by the Samsung Galaxy Note. Its very large five-inch display is countered by a narrow bezel t...

Mozilla rumored to debut LG-made Boot to Gecko device at MWC

Posted on Feb 24, 2012 by MG15

Mozilla hasn't exactly been quiet about the fact that it has some big stuff to show off at Mobile World Congress. We've already gotten a peek at Boot to Gecko and it's announced it'll be joining the app market fray. But, what we haven't heard anything about just yet, is hardware. A mobile operating system and software outlet are only useful if you've got a physical platform to run it on. Now rumors are circulating that LG is in cahoots with the makers of Firefox and will be building developer hardware for its fledgling OS. Mozilla CTO Brendan Eich has said publicly his foundation will be at MWC with "partners..." plural. Who exactly those ally companies are isn't clear, but we'd say it's saf...

Get 50GB Free Cloud Storage for Android

Get 50GB Free Cloud Storage for Android

Posted on Feb 24, 2012 by MG15

Box just updated its Android App, and if you get it in the next 30 days, you'll get 50GB of cloud storage for free. Forever. That's totally great and you should get it right now. The forever part is crucial here, since it's not some gimmick offer that'll turn into a lemon after a few months of use. The space is yours to keep. Plus the file size limit gets a bump to 100MB, up from 25MB, if you get the app before March 23, 11:59PM. Box ran a similar offer for iOS last year when the iPhone 4S came out, and it's still one of the best and craziest values out there if you got in before the offer shut down.

The site states that the asking price will be "around $3,500" and expects the camera will be announced on Monday or Tuesday of next week. Samsung Rugby Smart offers ruggedized construction and Android 2.3 on AT&T for $99.99

Posted on Feb 24, 2012 by MG15

If you've been looking enviously at the Motorola Defy+ and its semi-waterproof construction, AT&T and Samsung might have the phone for you. The upcoming Samsung Rugby Smart is claimed to be dustproof, temperature-resistant, and able to sit in one meter of water for up to 30 minutes, much like the aforementioned Defy+ and the recently-launched Pantech Element tablet. The Rugby Smart's other specs are a bit more pedestrian: it'll include HSPA+ connectivity, a 3.7-inch WVGA Super AMOLED display, 4GB of internal storage (with a microSD slot), 1650mAh battery, and 5MP rear camera that can shoot 720p video. There's also the requisite front-facing camera for video chat, and, of course, Android 2.3 ...

Google Nexus tablet may have a 7-inch display, $199 price tag, rumors reiterate

Wow, it has been a while since we last had a rumor about a Google branded tablet. Last time, which was about six weeks ago, it was claimed that a 7-inch slate priced at $199 was being readied for a late Q2 release. But although that information seemed a bit shaky for us at the time, the odds of it turning out to be accurate are raising as we now have another source providing similar claims.
According to Richard Slim, who is an analyst with DisplaySearch, Google is indeed working on a tablet with a 7-inch display and 1280 by 800 pixels of resolution. Moreover, manufacturing of the first batch of tablets – between 1.5 and 2 million units, is set to begin in April. Interestingly, he also claims...

Google to deliver “an array of consumer devices,” to challenge Apple?

Google Music is not living up to expectations - that’s the quick summary derived from various Google managers talking to recording labels, CNET learned from inside sources. But that’s not what customers really care deeply about - with Rdio and other monthly subscription services, there are plenty of alternatives. What’s interesting, though, in CNET’s scoop is that Google is once again suggested to be working on hardware.
Googlers allegedly said that the music service will get a big push from Google marketing later on, after Google finishes work on its hardware strategy.
And yes, this means that Google will enter in direct competition with Apple over consumer products. CNET says Google will ...

Here comes another Android smartphone that we will get to check out next week in Barcelona – the Acer Liquid Glow. The company just announced the handset officially confirming that it will be shown off at the MWC 2012 expo.
In terms of specs, we don't really know much as to what the Acer Liquid Glow has to offer. However, it seems like it will be a mid-range device, given that it sports a 3.7-inch display and a 5-megapixel auto-focus camera with LED flash. Furthermore, the smartphone will run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box and will support NFC. And if you hate it when smartphones come only in one boring color shade, you will be happy to know that the Acer Liquid Glow will be o...
