While we already know that Nvidia's Tegra 3 quad-core SoC (aka Kal-El) will arrive in the 10-inch Asus Eee Pad Transformer 2 (Prime) tablet, Asus CEO Jonney Shih said that both the tablet and the highly-anticipated superpowered-chip will arrive on November 9.
Nvidia's Tegra 3 was previously reported to arrive by the end of summer or early September, but the company delayed its release due to a need for an increased validation timeframe. "It took a little more time than we thought to get the software optimized for the hardware,” a Nvidia spokesperson told EE Times. "We are on schedule."

TSMC, tipped to be biting into Samsung’s supply contract with Apple, has announced that it has begun volume production of 28nm chips and has products already shipping to customers, though the company did not confirm Apple was one of them. Instead, AMD, NVIDIA, Qualcomm and Altera all get name-checked, with AMD and NVIDIA saying they will be using the 28nm process silicon in their next-gen graphics products.
Meanwhile, Qualcomm’s next Snapdragon S4 chips will also be built using 28nm processes, on silicon produced by TSMC’s factories. In face, the company says it has more than 80 customer tape-outs at present, over twice as many as for TSMC’s 40nm production. As for the chips themselves, TSMC...

NVIDIA's opinionated CEO Jen-Hsun Huang, who sometimes tattoos the Tegra logo on his shoulder, had interesting things to say as the closing guest at the AsiaD conference.
He basically reiterated the company's roadmap with Tegra 3 and the rest of the gang, and said that the main competitor is Qualcomm with its Snapdragon family. Currently Tegra 2 is in 70% of non-Apple tablets, as well as 13 high-end smartphones, and that number is bound to increase.

Nvidia's Tegra mobile processors have cost the company $2 billion (£1.25 billion) over the past five years, according to Jen-Hsun Huang, the company's CEO.

Speaking at the Asia D conference in Hong Kong, Huang confirmed that Tegra had cost the epic amount due to research and development, and that the figure is likely to increase.

Huang also mentioned Kal-El, the company's upcoming quad-core processor.

"Getting performance is the easy part," said Huang. "The challenging part is delivering that performance with low power, and better and better efficiency. The low-power core with Kal-El is 20 times "less hungry" for energy."

Filed in: nVIDIA

A teaser video (embedded below) for the forthcoming NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor has leaked out. Codenamed Kal-El, the system-on-a-chip runs a quad-core ARM Cortex A9 processor, which is accompanied by a fifth Cortex A9 core clocked at 500MHz for running tasks such as web browsing and listening to music. The graphics performance delivered by the 12-core graphics engine helps the processor outperform even Intel’s older Core 2 Duo processors.
The processor is expected to double the performance of NIVIDA’s Tegra 2 for general computing, but it will also deliver three times faster visuals. The Tegra 3 can play video at resolutions of 2560x1440 and power even 30-inch external displays.

NVIDIA's 3D Vision is impressive and all, but one trade-off you'll have to accept when you put on those active shutter glasses is a markedly dimmer field of view than what you'd get if you settled for plain-Jane 2D gaming. Well, the outfit just unveiled the second generation of the technology -- appropriately named 3D Vision 2 -- and this go 'round it promises not to strain your vision quite so much. These shutter glasses have a lens that's 20 percent larger, promising a brighter experience. As an added perk, the frames have been rejiggered to be lighter and more flexible so that you can comfortably wear headphones without pinching your lobes. As for the newest 3D Vision monitors and laptops...

Nvidia's GeForce 285 Beta Drivers Hint at New Mobile GPUs

Nvidia's GeForce 285 Beta Drivers Hint at New Mobile GPUs

Posted on Oct 05, 2011 by MG1

It looks like Nvidia is gearing up to launch a pair of 600 Series mobile graphics chips. We know this because somebody went and dissected Nvidia's recently released GeForce 283.38 drivers and found a couple of lines of code referencing the unreleased parts, which is a good indicator that they'll be showing up soon.
VR-Zone dug up the following lines of code from the new drivers:
NVIDIA_DEV.1058.01 = "NVIDIA GeForce 610M"
NVIDIA_DEV.0DE9.01 = "NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M"
Not much is known about these upcoming parts, though VR-Zone surmises it's entirely possible the GT 630M could be the shipping name for Nvidia's GK107, a part that features a 128-bit memory interface and supports DDR3 and GDDR5 m...

First quad-core Tegra 3 tablet appears, ready for production

First quad-core Tegra 3 tablet appears, ready for production

Posted on Sep 28, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: TabletsnVIDIA

We've been waiting for the first Tegra 3 quad-core processors in October, but having this very first slate running on all four (if not five) cores is reassuring. The ZTE T98 is a 7-inch Android tablet unveiled at the PT/Expo Comm in China and its cores are ticking at 1.3GHz, slightly less than the 1.5GHz that could be easily achieved.
One reason for having the lower speed is battery preservation as the T98 only features a 4,000mAh juicer. There's also 1GB of RAM and 16 gigs of internal memory, rounding up this speedy little slate. In terms of photographic capabilities, the China-made device features a 5-megapixel rear camera and a 2MP front snapper.
Now, having the first quad-core tablet is ...

Nvidia Reveals Secret 5th Core in Kal-El Phone Chip

Nvidia Reveals Secret 5th Core in Kal-El Phone Chip

Posted on Sep 21, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: nVIDIA

Nvidia’s new Kal-El chipset won’t be the first quad-core chip for phones and tablets: it’ll be the first quint-core.
In a white paper today, Nvidia revealed that Kal-El will include a surprise fifth core, a “companion core” built using a different process which will keep Kal-El devices running at very low power when in standby mode.
Nvidia calls its approach “variable symmetric multiprocessing” and says it lets Kal-El devices use the minimum amount of power necessary for all tasks, conserving battery life.
The trick is based on the four main cores and the “companion” core being based on different silicon processes, Nvidia says. CPUs based on low-power process technologies run very efficientl...

Soon after the big reveal for Windows 8 at Microsoft’s BUILD conference, system on chip manufacturers NVIDIA stepped up to present their Windows 8 Developer Program, made to help those creating future applications for the Windows 8 platform. Noting that this program will include both tools and resources for “hundreds of millions of ARM and x86-based devices” that will soon be using Windows 8, NVIDIA added that all four of their processor brands will support Windows 8 in full. This includes, you guessed it, NVIDIA’s upcoming quad-core Tegra processor codenamed Project Kal-El. Kal-El, for those of you that do not know, is an ARM-based system on what NVIDIA reminds us is “on a chip that will po...

NVIDIA Announces "Grey", First Tegra SoC with Integrated Baseband Due in 2012

Posted on Sep 12, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: nVIDIA

Four months ago NVIDIA announced the acquisition of Icera, a baseband solution provider. Icera's technology didn't make it into any smartphones but it did have some success in the USB modem market. The obvious impteus for the acquisition was to eventually integrate Icera basebands into NVIDIA Tegra SoCs, providing a "single chip" solution for those customers who want it. Currently Qualcomm is the only major SoC player to offer an application processor with integrated baseband with its Snapdragon SoC.
After the acquisition was announced NVIDIA wouldn't commit to any timeframe for integrating Icera's technology, even going as far as to say that many customers weren't demanding that level of in...
