CSIRO snatches $220m windfall in WiFi patent dispute with AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon

CSIRO snatches $220m windfall in WiFi patent dispute with AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon

Posted on Apr 03, 2012 by MG3

Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization keeps bowling 'em over -- in the courtroom, anyway -- with its hardy WiFi patent. The government-funded research group has chalked up another $220 million win after AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Acer, Lenovo and Sony each agreed to establish licenses with the litigious group. CSIRO now holds agreements with 23 companies and has pocketed more than $430 million from its courtroom activities. Australian Senator Chris Evans estimates that 90 percent of the industry is now paying licensing fees for the technology, but with the patent set to expire next year, we'd be mighty paranoid to be among that final ten percent. You'll find ...

Apparently, the fourth largest cell phone company in the United States has gotten the ball moving already, obtaining the services of TAP Advisors to explore a sale, according to Bloomberg. A potential sale could garner as much as $3 billion.

T-Mobile sued over NFC patent which may not cover NFC

T-Mobile sued over NFC patent which may not cover NFC

Posted on Mar 28, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: T-Mobile

T-Mobile USA was sued today by a company called On Track Innovations, which claims that T-Mobile's smartphones with NFC technology infringe one of its patents. OTI's been around since 1990 and has a long history developing smart card systems, which is why the single patent in the lawsuit may not be quite so easy to win with in court: it narrowly covers a "data transaction card" with fixed contacts on it in addition to working in a contactless mode. That doesn't appear to describe either the Samsung Galaxy S II or the Nexus S — T-Mobile's only NFC smartphones — but we have yet to see OTI's complaint and how the company's lawyers have made the argument. Then again, OTI says it's pursuing an "o...

T-Mobile's Web Guard blocking clean sites

T-Mobile's Web Guard blocking clean sites

Posted on Mar 27, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: T-Mobile

T-Mobile USA's Web Guard sounds like a good idea. When activated, it keeps those under 18 from viewing web sites on their phone that deal with topics like Alcohol, Drugs, Guns, Suicide, Pornography, Weapons and more. The feature is automated and looks for certain keywords to determine if a site is safe for little Johnnie to read. The feature is turned on by default on all of T-Mobile USA's pre-paid accounts. Although it can be disabled by those over 18, the error page that pops up when a site is blocked doesn't explain how to disable it.
The problem is that Web Guard has run wild and because a relatively clean site might have a keyword misconstrued by the software, sites related to music, s...

T-Mobile Hit With NFC-Related Patent Lawsuit

T-Mobile Hit With NFC-Related Patent Lawsuit

On Track Innovations today announced that it has filed a lawsuit against T-Mobile USA, alleging that T-Mobile sells NFC-equipped smartphones that violate OTI's patents. The lawsuit was filed in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. NFC technology lets phone owners make contactless payments as well as other applications. OTI didn't say if it was seeking damages or a licensing agreement. The company indicated that it is prepared to flex its intellectual property muscle to generate income for itself.

T-Mobile Sidekick 4G gets retired, Sidekick brand on hold for now

T-Mobile Sidekick 4G gets retired, Sidekick brand on hold for now

Posted on Mar 19, 2012 by MG1

T-Mobile has decided to pull the plug on its Sidekick 4G smartphone and is, for now, putting the Sidekick line of smartphones on hold until further notice. Our friends at The Verge reached out to the carrier and were told "While the T-Mobile Sidekick 4G is being retired, it doesn't mean we are discontinuing the T-Mobile Sidekick line. T-Mobile continues to update and expand its 4G product portfolio and we'll keep you posted when we have news to share on T-Mobile's latest 4G devices." The T-Mobile Sidekick line is best known for the slide-up or flip-out full QWERTY keyboard found on its devices.

When it arrived in April of last year, the T-Mobile Sidekick 4G was more than a re-imagining of an aging brand: the Samsung SGH-T839 was perhaps the best mid-range Android handset we'd ever seen, with a fantastic physical QWERTY keyboard and loads of value for the money. For the past eleven months, the iF Design award-winning handset had a good run, but now T-Mobile tells us that it's officially discontinuing the phone. (This confirms an earlier TmoNews report.) That said, that doesn't mean there isn't another Sidekick in the cards.

Posted on Mar 16, 2012 by MG3

HTC devices such as the Sensation and Vivid are finally getting in with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, thanks to some recently available software updates, but that doesn’t mean older HTC handsets are left out of the loop in terms of general updates.
Well, if you happen to own either the T-Mobile myTouch 4G or 4G Slide, devices that have been around for quite some time now, you’ll be pleased to find upcoming maintenance updates headed your way. Basically, they upgrade the software of these Gingerbread devices to version 2.32.531.1, and for the most part, it should comfort those who are still dreaming about the possibility of Ice Cream Sandwich.

T-Mobile pleads for FCC-mandated 700MHz LTE interoperability

Posted on Mar 15, 2012 by MG3

Filed in: T-Mobile

T-Mobile USA has petitioned the Federal Communications Commission to mandate interoperability of LTE devices that use the 700MHz spectrum used by AT&T and Verizon Wireless. This would allow devices made for either carrier to roam between the two, and would make it easier for other carriers to set up roaming agreements for LTE service.

AT&T version of Samsung GALAXY Note hacked to work on T-Mobile's 4G pipeline

AT&T version of Samsung GALAXY Note hacked to work on T-Mobile's 4G pipeline

Posted on Mar 14, 2012 by MG1

If you have been watching those Samsung GALAXY Note ads on television, or know someone with the "phablet," you might ask why others get all of the fun. If the problem is that you're an AT&T customer and don't have an upgrade at this time, and you don't want to pay the retail price, well there is not much anyone can do for you outside of giving you the money you need to buy the device. On the other hand, if the problem is merely that you are a T-Mobile customer, there is some hope for you.
Thanks to those Mensa members at XDA developers, there is a hack that will allow you to use the AT&T version of the Samsung GALAXY Note (i717) on the 4G network belonging to the fourth largest carrier in th...

Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G to launch via T-Mobile on March 28th for $149 on contract

Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G to launch via T-Mobile on March 28th for $149 on contract

Posted on Mar 13, 2012 by MG1

The Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G will be launched March 28th via T-Mobile at a price of $149.99 with a signed two-year pact. Don't let the price fool you, the device has some decent specs including the dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S3 processor, a 3.97 Super AMOLED display with WVGA resolution, Android 2.3 and 42Mbps HSDPA+ connectivity. The 5MP camera on back offers AF and captures video at 720p
While Android 4.0 won't be loaded on the Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G right out of the box, the odds favor the handset getting updated to Google's latest and greatest not terribly long after launch. The Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G will join with the Samsung Galaxy S II and the HTC Amaze to form a rather power...

HTC Dream gets unlocked bootloader, makes someone's come true

Posted on Mar 08, 2012 by MG1

Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy? Neither. It's HTC's increasingly creaky-looking Dream and it's just got its bootloader unlocked. Others may remember it fondly as the T-Mobile G1 and the very first Android phone to arrive on the market. For that alone, it deserves some respect and the right to join its successors in the unlocked bootloader pantheon. Retrospective tinkerers from the future can head over to HTC's developer site for all the tools.

T-Mobile USA: 10 LTE devices in 2013 plus 4G iPhone support

T-Mobile USA will have ten LTE devices up for sale by the end of 2013, the carrier’s chief technical officer has revealed, with 4G service across 50 markets as well as for the iPhone. Speaking on T-Mobile’s so-called “Challenger Strategy” conference call today, CTO Neville Ray described how the carrier would juggle its spectrum holdings to better server a new breed of high-speed hardware. Interestingly, the carrier also seems to be paving the way for 4G iPhone support.

T-Mobile asks FCC to block Verizon spectrum buy

T-Mobile asks FCC to block Verizon spectrum buy

Posted on Feb 23, 2012 by MG1

T-Mobile USA has urged the FCC to block the $3.9 billion sale of wireless spectrum by cable companies to Verizon Wireless on Tuesday. Possibly frustrated after its own deal with AT&T was denied, the provider argued the deal between Verizon, Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Bright House Networks, and Cox Communications would give Verizon an "excessive concentration" of wireless spectrum. Verizon is already the biggest cellphone company in the US, while T-Mobile is fourth largest.
Many companies have argued such large deals will make competition in the industry difficult, as it risks letting only the leader afford to offer faster download speeds and more data. MetroPCS, the fifth-biggest cellphone ...
