Acer Iconia Tab A500's Android 4.0 update shows early

Posted on Apr 26, 2012 by MG3

Android 4.0 has arrived just a couple of days earlier than previously billed for Acer's Iconia Tab A500, according to reports from Android Central. The OS update had been scheduled to arrive April 27.
Acer has been rolling out the OS update for its Iconia line of tablets since February, with the Iconia Tab A200 first in line. That update fixed a number of bugs in the A200's operation, improving browser responsiveness and microphone functioning, along with the features Android 4.0 itself brings.

Apple spawned the media tablet market with the launch of the original iPad a couple of years back. Two iPad updates and countless Android tablets later, its viselike grip over the tablet market remains intact. To add insult to injury for its rivals, market research firm IDC recently predicted that it could take until 2015 for Android tablets to overtake the iPad in terms of market share. Well, not so fast. For all we know, Windows 8 and not Android could eventually end up upsetting Apple’s apple cart. Hit the jump for more.

Acer Liquid Glow to help define budget Android 4.0

Posted on Feb 27, 2012 by MG3

Acer has followed up the CloudMobile with a second smartphone due at Mobile World Congress. The Liquid Glow will carry Acer's lightly skinned version of Android 4.0, but with a more modest 3.7-inch display. The newer, curvier design will be its own highlight, with colors such as Alpine White and Sakura Pink on the back that will be matched to the display at the front.
A five-megapixel camera with a flash is standard, and NFC is new to Acer's Liquid line. The short-range wireless here is useful for Android Beam device-to-device sharing with other Android 4.0 owners as well as the usual tag reading and mobile payments. Most other details have been left out so far, although Android 4.0 perform....

Report: Acer and Lenovo to Launch Windows 8 Slates in 2012

Posted on Jan 04, 2012 by MG3

CES Las Vegas is just around the corner, but, similar to years past, we already know some of the hot items that will be on show in Sin City. Last year, we saw numerous dual-core smartphones and more Android tablets than we care to remember. This year, we're expecting to see Ultrabooks, some quad-core phones and tablets and, hopefully, something Windows 8-related. Considering Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is giving the keynote address, we figure some Windows 8 action isn't completely out of the question, but will he talk about any of the rumored Windows 8 tablets?

Acer's first venture into Windows Phone arrives in France as the Allegro

Posted on Oct 31, 2011 by MG1

Remember the Acer W4? After seeing it at IFA 2011, it seems that it's finally ready to make some first impressions, and its blind date is with France. Known officially as the Allegro, Acer's inaugural Windows Phone isn't going over the top in the spec department: it has a 3.6-inch WVGA (800 x 480) display, 1GHz single-core Qualcomm MSM8255 CPU, 8GB internal storage, 5MP rear camera with LED flash and a 1,300mAh battery. However, a unique addition to this €299 ($425) device is a feature called Fast Charge, which allows the Allegro to get juiced up to 2.5 times faster than the rest of the company's lineup. Expect the device to land in France in mid-November with two color options -- white and ...

Acer won’t move to ARM processors until Windows 8 lands according to source

Posted on Sep 07, 2011 by MG1

Acer was at IFA last weekend and one of the coolest products that the company showed off was the Ultrabook Aspire S3 that uses Intel’s new ultra mobile platform to combine portability with performance. There have been rumors swirling for a while that Acer would be offering machines using ARM processors as well to help it be able to produce cheaper notebooks. An ARM processor combined with a lower cost OS would make for an interesting computer indeed.
ARMdevices reports that a product strategy manager for Acer said at IFA that Acer would not be offering ARM processors inside notebooks in the short term. The unnamed source claims that ARM processors won’t show up inside Acer gear until Windows...

Microsoft teases a WP7 version of the Samsung Galaxy S II, plus new handsets from Fujitsu, ZTE and Acer

Microsoft teases a WP7 version of the Samsung Galaxy S II, plus new handsets from Fujitsu, ZTE and Acer

Posted on Jul 13, 2011 by MG1

Microsoft's WPC 2011 conference which we reported from yesterday is in full swing, and special time was dedicated to Windows Phone, with Redmond showing off not one or two, but four new WP handsets. While it didn't specify many details about the phones themselves, Microsoft reiterated that we will have three new manufacturers jumping on the bandwagon - Acer, Fujitsu and ZTE.
But there were actually four handsets on stage, with the fourth being none other but the Windows Phone version of the Samsung Galaxy S II, one of the best handsets money can currently buy. Samsung's phone, as well as all others that were present during the keynote, seemed to have the good ol' front-facing camera, which i...

Acer Iconia Tab A500 receiving its portion of Android 3.1 Honeycomb

Posted on Jul 07, 2011 by MG1

The Acer Iconia Tab A500 has started receiving its portion of the Android 3.1 Honeycomb OTA update July 5th, judging from an Acer Germany Facebook page posting. We heard about this update back in May, although the promise was for the first weeks of June; still, beginning of July is not too shabby either.
The Acer Iconia Tab A500 is a 10" Honeycomb slate with nice aluminum back cover and all the bells and whistles one would expect from a self-respecting Android tablet.
At last check it also comes cheaper than most Android tablet offerings, selling for around $450 at places like Best Buy or Amazon, so whoever is the lucky owner of the Iconia Tab A500, the thought that the Android 3.1 Honeycom...

Android 3.1 leaks for Acer Iconia Tab A500

Posted on Jun 28, 2011 by MG1

Acer's Android 3.1 (codenamed Honeycomb) update for its Iconia Tab A500 tablet has leaked out. It first appeared on the Chinese website bbs.gfan.com While this update isn't official in the sense that Acer has not yet released it via its own channels, it is the real deal. The leaked update.zip file supports multiple languages and including Google Apps. This means that Android 3.1 ROMS like HoneyVillian and Minimalist 3.1 are no longer required for Iconia Tab A500 owners.
The update brings resizable home screen widgets, support for a variety of new input sources and motion events, the Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP) API for audio, and other improvements that Motorola Xoom and Asus Eee Pad T...
