As seems to happen often with reports from DigiTimes, this news sounds completely reasonable, but also completely overblown all at the same time. The new report says that the rumored Google Nexus tablet could have an adverse effect on other Android tablet sales when it is released. This in itself seems perfectly reasonable, because there is a niche audience that would love to see a Nexus tablet and would likely choose it over other options. But, that's just it: a niche audience.
The idea is that the Nexus tablet will likely come loaded with Android 4.1, which will not be available to other manufacturers and will have extra features that make the Nexus tablet more enticing than other Android...

Sony Ericsson has already jumped ahead of the rest of the Android manufacturer pack by committing itself to releasing Android 4.0 on a slew of smartphones and even going so far as to to release "preview ROMs" for several of them. On the tablet side, Sony looks like it's being equally aggressive. A Chinese web site is showing leaked photographs of the Huawei MediaPad running Android 4.0.1. While no definitive word has come out of Huawei yet, it certainly does indicate that the manufacturer plans on updating the tablet to Ice Cream Sandwich from the Android 3.2 build of the OS that was installed for the launch of the device. After the update, the tablet will have the ability to make voice calls and one of the leaked spyshots shows the dialer on the tablet.

Just recently, Samsung updated us on its Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) update schedule and which devices are getting it and to our great disappointment the Samsung Galaxy S and the 7-inch original Galaxy Tab are not in there. The latest models of the company are, of course, getting the update: the Samsung Galaxy S II, S II LTE, Galaxy R, Galaxy Tab 10.1, Galaxy Tab 8.9, Galaxy Tab 7.7 and Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus. App Store generates 6 times more profit than Android Market

We all knew the App Store was the most profitable app catalog out there, but recent findings from Distimo show just how shockingly more cash it yields for developers. The top 200 apps in the App Store generate 6 times the profits of those in the Android Market. This makes it obvious why most programmers focus on iOS first and Android is usually only second-best.
The stats were all published by Distimo reporting about the January to November state of the application markets. Other interesting findings include the fact that Microsoft’s Windows Marketplace has outgrown the Nokia Ovi Store and the RIM BlackBerry App Worlds.

Schmidt suggests Google tablet could launch within six months

Google chairman Eric Schmidt may have let slip a Google-branded tablet that will launch in the first half of 2012. In the “next six months we plan to market a tablet of the highest quality,” Schmidt reportedly said during an interview with Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera. Schmidt’s quote could mean many things. First, that Google has plans to develop, market and sell its own tablet (possibly in partnership with Motorola) within the next six months. Or second, and perhaps more likely, Schmidt’s statement could mean that Google is planning to begin pumping up the marketing around Ice Cream Sandwich and improving the experience that Google offers on Android tablets. Motorola Xoom receives early Android 4.0.3 build as Google adds source code to AOSP

Since Android 4.0.3 is the "base version" for Ice Cream Sandwich, Google has added the source code for it to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). The build supports two devices — we've already seen the update roll out for the Nexus S, but the other is a device that was also launched in direct partnership with Google: the Motorola Xoom (Wi-Fi). True to form, the enterprising hackers at XDA-Developers have already compiled it into a bootable ROM for the Motorola Xoom.
The build is certainly not for the faint of heart: the camera doesn't work and there are likely plenty of other bugs, and as an AOSP-build it also doesn't include Google Apps. All that might be the bad news, but the good news ...

Back in May, the Samsung Galaxy Tab was updated to Gingerbread over in Italy. In the States, regional carrier U.S. Cellular is now updating the Samsung Galaxy Tab to Android 2.3.5. The 7 inch tablet launched with Froyo so users of the Galaxy Tab on the U.S. Cellular pipeline are going to feel as if they have a brand new device in their hand.
According to the changelog, the update brings VPN support, improved volume control when playing a video or watching a movie while using a headset. Google enhances Image Search for tablet users

Google is at it again, enhancing the user experience of Image Search for owners of iPads and Android tablets. The new features mostly center on touch-based interaction. Users only need to touch a thumbnail to see a full-sized image, and swiping left or right takes you to the subsequent images. Information on the full-sized image is now displayed in a more tablet-friendly format as well.
These updates build on other tablet-centric features introduced this summer, when Google increased the size of image previews, introduced continuous-scrolling thumbnails, and more rapid loading of thumbnails (which we imagine was needed to make continuous-scrolling a practical reality).

We've talked in the past about how OEMs take the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and use it to build software tailored for devices in the context of x86 optimizations, and today two partners are sharing some more details about their specific timelines for Android 4.0 releases. Those two are Sony Ericsson and Motorola, who have outlined in their respective blog posts the path from code to getting a fully baked ROM pushed out over the air to handsets.
The two posts describe the process as we've understood it for a while now, and with Android 4.0 things don't seem any different. Google works with a specific OEM and SoC vendor around some chosen reference hardware (in this case Galaxy Nexus)...

Motorola has posted a rather lengthy explanation of the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade process to its corporate blog, where it details the four major steps that need to occur before a software update is made available to users. Unfortunately, the company doesn't provide any extra information as to exactly when the Android 4.0 upgrade for existing devices will be released or when it plans to launch new devices with Android 4.0 already on them. It did reiterate its previous commitment to bring the new software to the DROID RAZR, DROID BIONIC, and XOOM tablet, but it has yet to provide an exact timeframe.
