Barnes & Noble launches Nook Tablet, lights a fire under Amazon

Barnes & Noble launches Nook Tablet, lights a fire under Amazon

Posted on Nov 08, 2011 by MG1

Yep, we had a feeling this one was coming. As expected, bookstore mega-chain Barnes & Noble has launched its answer to Amazon's Kindle Fire (and to a lesser extent, Kobo's multimedia Vox slate) -- also as expected, the thing looks an awful lot like its predecessor, the recently discounted Nook Color, right down to the metal bar on the bottom corner. Granted, B&N did already make the leap into the tablet space, when the Nook Color was upgraded earlier this year -- but the Nook Tablet brings more than just a new name, of course.

Apple says Kindle Fire is actually good for them

Apple says Kindle Fire is actually good for them

Posted on Nov 04, 2011 by MG1

When the Amazon Kindle Fire was announced a couple of weeks ago carrying a price tag of only $200, for the first time we thought that the iPad really has gotten some competition.
The Kindle Fire is smaller at 7 inches, but offers a dual-core processor and a heavily modified Android that make it desirable.
Now, you might expect Apple to be challenged, but CFO Peter Oppenheimer actually said the Fire was good for the iPad. How come? Here's what Barclays published based on an interview with Oppenheimer:
“While the pricing at $199 looks disruptive for what seems to be the iPad’s most important rising challenge, the Amazon Fire – it is important to note that it could fuel further fragmentation ...

Foxconn gets orders for the next Kindle Fire

Foxconn gets orders for the next Kindle Fire

Posted on Oct 21, 2011 by MG1

It's looking more and more like if it's good enough for Apple, it's good enough for Amazon. Not only has Amazon taken a note from Apple in building up content stores for music, video and books, but also in bringing those stores together in the ultimate content consumption device: a tablet. Granted, Amazon is using the hardware as a loss leader to sell content, whereas Apple uses the content to sell hardware, but the parallels are still there. Amazon also took a cue from Apple in making said tablet into a closed ecosystem (albeit build upon an open source project,) with content reviews and controls, in order to create a very specific experience for the user. Now, Amazon is going another step ...

Amazon may sell over 5 million Kindle Fire tablets in Q4

Amazon may sell over 5 million Kindle Fire tablets in Q4

Posted on Oct 17, 2011 by MG1

Amazon could ship 5 million or more Kindle Fire tablets in the fourth quarter of 2011, one analyst believes. Rodman & Renshaw analyst Ashok Kumar on Thursday stated that Amazon likely has a huge hit on its hands, with fourth-quarter shipments that may surpass even the most bullish estimates. ”Checks indicate that they could ship upwards of 5 million units in the December quarter, which is just shy of half of Apple’s volume,” Kumar told CNET in an interview. An earlier rumor from DigiTimes suggested that Amazon has placed orders in the neighborhood of 4 million units, and preliminary shipment estimates from Forrester suggested that Amazon might ship 5 million tablets this quarter. Barclays se...

Kindle Fire Already Drawing Patent Lawsuits

Kindle Fire Already Drawing Patent Lawsuits

Posted on Oct 11, 2011 by MG3

The Kindle Fire isn’t even due to ship to consumers for another month, but already it has attracted its first patent suit. Smartphone Technologies LLC, which as far as we can tell doesn’t actually make anything, has sued Amazon for infringing on four of its patents. These patents seem to describe operating a touchscreen device by tapping on icons; apparently that’s a real patent.

Kindle Fire pre-orders reach 95,000 units on day one, market research firm says

Kindle Fire pre-orders reach 95,000 units on day one, market research firm says

Posted on Oct 04, 2011 by MG1

Amazon reportedly sold 95,000 Kindle Fire tablets during the device’s first day of pre-sales availability alone. According to estimates from market research and intelligence firm eDataSource, pre-order sales of Amazon’s upcoming premier tablet may be on an astounding pace. To put the company’s estimated day-one sales in perspective, RIM sold just 200,000 BlackBerry PlayBook tablets into sales channels during the entirety of its second fiscal quarter. How did eDataSource arrive at the 95,000 figure? ”eDataSource’s panel of 800,000 inboxes allows us to gain insight into eCommerce sales” eDataSource CEO Carter Nicholas said. “Within hours we can get a read on hot product launches based on sales...

Kindle Fire unveiling event makes you wonder whether Bezos is the new Steve Jobs

Kindle Fire unveiling event makes you wonder whether Bezos is the new Steve Jobs

Posted on Oct 03, 2011 by MG3

Amazon’s Kindle Fire set the 7-inch tablet segment ablaze when it was announced two days ago as it matches their hardware for the most part, yet outdoes them in the price game by being more than twice cheaper than the majority of 7 inchers selling at around $500. The Kindle Fire sells for $200, but it’s the little details that count and for Amazon, it’s the fact that this is an end-to-end device that really makes it outstanding.

This Is the New Amazon Kindle Fire Color Tablet—and It's Only $199!

Posted on Sep 29, 2011 by MG1

This is incredible. The new Amazon Kindle Fire will cost only $199! This is a killer price for a color tablet. Even while it doesn't match the iPad's features, there's going to be some fierce competition this year.
Check out our up close and personal video to see it in action and keep reading for all the details.
The right (basic) stuff
As the rumors pointed out, Amazon's color tablet has a 7-inch 16-million color display. Like the iPad, it's an IPS panel, which means it has a wide viewing angle and great color saturation. The resolution is pretty dense: 169 pixels per inch. It's not comparable to the 326 pixels per inch of the small iPhone 4's display, but it's better than the iPad's 132 pi...

Amazon to reveal 'Kindle Fire' Android tablet on Wednesday

Amazon to reveal 'Kindle Fire' Android tablet on Wednesday

Posted on Sep 27, 2011 by MG1

Amazon will unveil its Android-powered “Kindle Fire” tablet on Wednesday during a press event in New York City. The Kindle Fire will begin to ship during the second week of November and, with a similar-sized 7-inch screen, the device looks very much like the BlackBerry PlayBook according to reports. GDGT explained that the device was built by Quanta, the same manufacturer that built the PlayBook, and the firm played a big role in designing each of the slates. While recent leaks have created a lot of buzz about the potential tablet, GDGT suggested the tablet might not be that exciting. Reportedly the Kindle Fire is “pretty poor” and was rushed out the door so that Amazon had a product on stor...

Amazon may unveil first tablet on September 28

Amazon has just sent out invitations for a press event taking place next Wednesday, September 28, in New York City. Since most such occasions are called for to unveil a major product launch, we can’t help but assume that this event is for the company’s first and long-rumored Android-based tablet dubbed the Amazon Kindle Tablet.
The much anticipated tablet has long been speculated to be an iPad-killer thanks to Amazon’s established ecosystem of services, price competitiveness, and strong distribution channel. However, the latest reports from analysts and industry folks who have been privileged with a limited preview of the slate say that it’s a 7-incher that’s more of a Barnes & Noble NOOK Co...

Can the New Amazon Tablet Succeed?

Can the New Amazon Tablet Succeed?

Posted on Sep 15, 2011 by MG1

It's interesting that the Kindle (as opposed to the upcoming Amazon Kindle Tablet) was written off when the Apple iPad arrived, but curiously, sales rose. While the iPad is great for thumbing through magazines, the Kindle has it beat at book reading.
The Kindle has a MEMS display, which produces an image that sticks without power and supports a platform that parallels the readability of actual books. There's no glare. The page does not refresh continually. Also, the "digital ink" display uses very little juice to operate.
Amazon learned two things when the iPad came out. First, it found out that people would still buy the Kindle in an iPad world. Second, it discovered that it could sell a lo...

Is Amazon Apple's biggest threat in tablets?

It’s almost guaranteed that Amazon will release a tablet or two to go against the iPad and many analysts believe that Amazon has the best shot at dethroning Apple in this market for multiple reasons. Let’s take a look at how likely it is for Amazon to succeed in the tablet space.
Of course, this is going to be somewhat speculative because the products haven’t even been announced. Rumors suggest that Amazon will release a pair of Android-based tablets by the holiday season which are powered by NVIDIA chips and will have deep hooks into Amazon services. Let’s use that as the jumping off point.
